      That's so true, I think many people miss the fact that she's not trying to be the most powerful singer on earth, she likes to remain in her confortable range. Instead the true joy of her music comes from her songwriters.

    I am 83 years old, I shouldn't be a Taylor Swift fan. Not that long ago, I started thinking, OK, I've heard so much about this Taylor Swift, let's have a listen. Now I am a Swiftie and proud of it. I am absolutely blown away by the girl. Well, woman. She's got BRAINS, too, people, she can in fact sing and has amazing vocal control. No two songs are alike, really. But what comes through more than anything else, is Taylor's innate EMPATHY. I listen to a song like Ronan and she's got me bawling my eyes out. I understand she basically writes most of her songs herself, and there seems no doubt that the songwriting is one of her basic strengths. Every song tells a story, has a message, she has a lot so say and it's the music that lets her say it.

      Any who. I wasn't a fan per say, but knew of her music and liked to just fine 😊 Until my daughter became a swiftie, and began telling me the stories behind the songs, about all the Easter eggs etc. And Taylor's life and so on..

      42 yo male who was in similar shoes as the op. My wife is a full-on swiftie and I just "liked" her radio songs. When newer stuff like Willow made it to the radio I was pleasantly surprised, but didn't go deeper than that.
      The Eras tour started up and my wife wanted to go, I pulled some strings and got 2 tickets in Seattle. She requested I go with her and gave me "homework" on Lover-Midnights. I instantly saw the differences between what I knew and the reality of who Taylor actually was. I immediately liked the non-radio stuff on 1st listen, becoming actually excited to see if the hype matched the concert.
      The concert was an incredible performance. Honestly, that was the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to about 150 in my life. Since the July concert, I have listened to her music consistently and consider myself a newforever Swiftie. Her talent is beyond comparison.

      @@becauseisaac You should listen to Swift's whole albums uninterrupted post-1989 (the extremely commercialized pop album that you can't handle at all so you can skip 1989 for now, 🤣) before making a final decision on Taylor Swift. These 6 songs are not the only type of songs that she made and I think there could have been better songs chosen from all 3 albums that your sister recommended (as a Swiftie I approve of her picks, of course).
      The Reputation and Lover (Lover is a very happy group of songs and not gut-punching like the ones you listened to here) albums have both amazing songs and very subpar songs (you will know what I am talking about). The whole album is written like a musical, and she plays all the characters. Betty, cardigan and August are all connected. It’s a love triangle. You neeeeed to listen to all three.

    The thing about Taylor Swift is, she's not at all about her singles. She typically picks the catchiest songs with high replay values as singles because she's a smart businesswoman and is aware that such a decision will bring loads of commercial success.
    Of course, this leads to many people thinking that she only writes songs like Shake It Off, so it's a double-edged sword

    So, she did not got the rights back to her music. She is re-recording her first 6 albums because she was not allowed the possibility of buying her masters. Also, she always wrote her songs. ALL of them. She started in country, went into pop, dabbed lightly with rock, got into folk, etc. Her body of work is super super varied and should not be judged based on singles. Singles are exactly that. There are whole albums and hers were never short

      Exactly. And Radio Stations all seem to have promised that once she drops her “Taylor’s Version” [TV] re-released albums, they will ditch the Scooter-Braun-owned versions and *only* play Taylor’s Versions. I love that. It’s like the entire music industry revolted against the Patriarchy, and if someone who owns an artist’s music library plans to sell it, they had better offer it to the Artist themselves first, give them the Right of First Refusal, or suffer the wrath of everyone in the music biz who can make his life miserable (I hope). That ought to be a law, musical artists don’t have enough (any?) protections under the law. Only the slimy record producers have control. That must end.

    • @allih8021
      @allih8021 Před 5 měsíci

      Came here to say this. @LegalEagle has a great video (that also features Rick Beato) that explains the whole thing. Essentially there are 2 types of copyright law at play - the copyright for the song as written (music & lyrics) and the copyright of the master recordings of those songs. TS owned the rights to the songs as written compositions but not to her masters, which we all now know her former manager sold to Scooter Braun. So because she's wealthy beyond belief and has a lot of power and clout in the music industry, and because she owns the rights to the songs themselves, she had the means to essentially just go re-record and re-release all of that music.
      New artists generally lack the means and money to pay to have their songs recorded and distributed which is why the managers/producers/record labels often own the master recordings - because they pay for all that stuff. It's how they make money after investing in a new artist and why owning masters for a famous musician has traditionally been a very lucrative investment. Taylor has completely upended that. Now that she's re-recorded those songs, anyone with two working brain cells is going to pay for and use the "Taylor's Version" so they don't piss her off. Which means with every recording she is further devaluing those original masters. It's kind of beautiful. KARMA INDEED.
      You should check out the video - it's well worth the watch: czcams.com/video/M-A_RrOeoWw/video.html&pp=ygULbGVnYWwgZWFnbGU%3D

      When you realize that she is possibly neurodivergent (her brain is wired completely different from normal people) it makes sense why she is the way she is like all her boyfriends who have completely misunderstood her because her brain is different and stuff like the way she celebrates or reacts is "not normal" like her "happy dancing/happy hands" which could come off as awkward and her very shocked faces at awards ceremonies which people tease/joke about to her face all the time. Also she is obsessed with things like the number 13 and cats. When you realize that she is possibly a neurodivergent savant it all kind of clicks for you regarding why Taylor Swift is Taylor Swift and why she can come up with amazing and unique lyrics and melodies.
      She says that the way she tolerates pain is to simply write a song about it. It comes from her whole childhood when she was ostracized at the lunch table and nobody ever invited her to a party or sleepover as a child. She wrote songs to tolerate and cope with the pain. When she grew up she simply wrote songs about the new group of people who did the same to her (exes and groups of other people who were horrible and mean to her).

    To get a handle on her huge musical diversity, I would also recommend these songs (TV means Taylor’s version / the re-record): no body no crime, right where you left me, the last great American dynasty, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, You’re Losing Me, All Too Well (10 min version), Forever Winter, Cardigan, You’re on your own kid, getaway car, End Game (Ft. Future & Ed Sheeran), “Slut!”, Clean (TV), Castles Crumbling (ft. Hayley Williams), Haunted, Is it Over Now?, That’s When (Ft. Keith Urban), Vigilante Shit, The Great War, Girl at Home (TV) Daylight, Mad Woman, and Call it What You Want
    In no particular order. I’m sure you won’t like all of them, but just trying to show her range, she’s done a bit of everything! And Taylor swift reactions seem to get loads of views so that doesn’t hurt 😂

      @AngelicaGarcia0717 Před 6 měsíci

      @@27p16and41p666 I don't see Ivy as heartbreaking. I know what you mean, cause there's obvious unhappiness in being in a marriage and being in love with someone that is not your husband, but still, I don't find it that much sad because she does not only talk about the pain of being in that marriage, she also talks about the love she has for this person and how now she's covered in it, so it is not completely dark, there's also light in it, it's bittersweet. And also, the melody and the energy in this song make you feel like it's not as heavy as it is, they make it lighter. As for seven, yeah, you're right, I'm guilty, this is a heartbreaking song, but I just find it so hauntingly beautiful that I had to put it there just cause I feel like any person with a decent taste would hear the beauty in the melody and her voice and love it even if they're not so much into sad songs. Plus, there's also so much innocent and nostalgic imagery in it, happy memories of childhood that are mixed with the not so happy ones, that I feel like it's not all just sad.

Speaking as a Swiftie, please for the love of fuck let's all be normal about this reaction/reactor. People are allowed to dislike/like what they've listened to, and everyone has different tastes in music. We don't need to shove all of Taylor's lore down his throat so he can "get" her music better. The only regret I have in life is not listening to Taylor's discography sooner. I was always the "radio listener". I remember hearing Teardrops on my Guitar on the radio in 2006. I remember songs from Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Rep. I have always liked them but I shamefully admit that I was the kind of person in my 20's where I avoided what was popular. I didn't want to follow trendy things. Taylor Swift was one of those situations. Finally in 2021 at the age of 33, I saw a random guy on CZcams reacting to her music videos for the first time and at that time I was trying to branch out into new music. I decided to listen to her entire discography in order. I'm not a big country person but Debut, Fearless and Speak Now were so good. Red got me interested even more. 1989 was the album that had me dancing in my chair while working at home. Rep was the album that blew my mind when she was giving rap vibes. Lover was a fun album as well. Folklore and Evermore were so different in the best way. I could not believe the song writing. I needed a dictionary. Now it was 2 weeks after Fearless TV was released and I knew in that moment that Taylor would be my #1 artists forever. Midnights was the first new album experience I had and it was so much fun. I don't understand how people underestimate her.....say her songs sound the same.....say she only talks about exes. I used to be one of those people and I am so glad that I'm not anymore.

    About Midnight Rain, the mix is interesting and it always kind of realated, to my ear, to the beginning of Lavender Haze, which is the album opener. From the first listen, it sounded to me like approaching a party, or a gathering, but you hear it first as you get into the hallway through a giant fish tank, and it gets noisier and clearer as you get nearer, until you turn and walk in.
    It felt really strange, after that, to see that she'd chosen a directed a music video for it in which she ENDS up surrounded by koi fish.
    The "vibe" of Midnight Rain rings very similar, to me. so it speaks of the same ambiance. of an intentional link between the themes.

    Taylor has been writing like this from near day one. Even shake it off is a big middle finger to the critics that talk about her “bad” dancing. She’s encouraging herself and her fans to shake off the opinions of others. Encouraging her fans to try new things and do the things that bring them joy even if you can’t be the best at it. Yes, it was ridiculously over played, but the larger problem is that people don’t listen to her or take her seriously when she speaks about her art.

    Isaac,
    great vid and reactions to the "other sides" of Taylor's music..the experiences you shared were almost identical to my own, previous earlier music of Taylor's left me with an impression of her as mostly "light Pop" but I agree with you 100% on her newer music, much more diverse, creative music influences and DAMN her newer lyrics really are more honest, sometimes darker, but so much more authentic and descriptive of the struggle we fact to find our human "missing half...right? As human's we're stupidly unrealistic so much of the time but our and perpetual optimism keeps us coming back again and again... I hear you on the dark, maybe depressing lyrics, but my added years allow me to live with and even enjoy the darker views becuz they are real and happen all the time... She wrote it and recorded it for the Where the Crawdads Sing movie, and it completely encapsulates the books tone and main character’s outlook on life! Tolerate It getting the respect it deserves and I fully believe it’s because of the performance she gives during The Eras Tour!

      My friend was joking that Taylor decided to copy her cats for that performance 😅

      That’s the reason, all right. It’s now my go-to song if I see a piano in a room.

    I was trying to explain to someone the other day how i love Taylor swift but don't listen to pop music. This encapsulates it perfectly. It's because she writes like a storyteller. My background is musical theatre. I love a story. Her songs (a good majority of them) have always felt more indie and genuin than any "pop" songs out there.

    There are two types of music enjoyers: rhythmical and lyrical. Taylor is very much a lyrical songwriter which is why some people don't get the hype about her. Once you actually listen to the lyrics you see how amazing she really is. Even from her old albums like 1989 with shake it off on in she has some great lyrics, like in the song out of the woods. Maybe you could listen to some Olivia Rodrigo, she dropped her sophomore album GUTS quite recently, not sure if it's your taste but I love it!

    Thank goodness you didn't overlook Tolerate It. We've all done at least a tiny bit of that in our relationships.
