  • Mikhail Kalatozov's fact based film about the Italian blimp journey to the Artic in 1928 that went terribly wrong starring Peter Finch, Sean Connery, Claudia Cardinale, Hardy Kruger and that bloke from Solaris.

My father was a merchant marine for about 10 years and he was into explorers and this was his favorite film. He died this year at 94 and as an older person, he was into concepts of leadership and men not explaining their 'feelings' but obviously still having to deal with feelings such as guilt. So, he liked everything about this film and I have many of the same sentiments that he had.
There are two versions of this film, the English version lacking subtitles for the Russian dialogue and a Russian version with English subtitles. The Russian version is the longer version and it's apparently available for free on apparently youtube and elsewhere. The soundtrack in the Russian version has a different score and some of the scenes are different as well. I joked once with my father because I have a weird sense of humor that the Russians on the icebreaker were saying to each other "the weather is too warm here."

Thanks Adam for your excellent comments. I'm going to have to find the Russian version as in the English version you don't get a proper sense of how long they were stranded. Lots to like about it though but I'm sure the longer version is better. Thanks again.

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I’m still quite intrigued to see it. On CZcams, MosFilm has uploaded it in two parts, part 1 is 1hr13 and part 2 is 1 hr 16 so possibly that includes the footage missing on your dvd

Thanks Neil. It's still a fascinatingly odd film. You don't get a sense of the crew being lost for that long. It was three weeks but the film makes it seem like three days. Maybe the missing 30 mins shows that better. Thanks for the info.

Absolutely Jason. In case people forget what Sean Connery looks like.
