    Cradle of Filth singer Dani Filth interviewed by Sam Dunn at Hellfest in 2011 for the Extreme Metal episode of Metal Evolution. They talk about Cradle's place in black metal, discovering Venom, and why a pop collaboration would be more hardcore than burning a church. A lot of people hate on CoF for not being “true” Black Metal. In my opinion the reason they’ve lasted so long is because they have branched out so much. I mean, these guys are from the early 90’s like it would be ridiculous if in 2018 they were still making the same Black Metal records that they were early on.

      Black Metal was mostly fucking garbage and very few bands had any real momentum going forward so Cradle of Filth borrowed from old books and made concept albums creating their own path while Black Metal died and Death Metal took over for good.

      Edwin Lopez Not exactly. From my experience people hated CoF because a lot of fans were really kids in pure teenage angst. Didn't know shit about the band or their music or even metal in general, they only liked to dress like vampires or like whores. Very few people (like me) actually cared about the music.

    People can talk shit on COF if they want to but Dani's vocals on albums like Dusk..., Cruelty and the Beast, Midian, are insane. The high shrieks on those records are crazy. Even on some later records he's a great metal vocalist. Live he's hit or miss but when he's on he's very good and I don't see how people can listen to those records and talk shit on his vocals.

      The Drüid: Yes I'm not a big fan of COF myself either but I did see them in 2003 in Detroit on a co-headlining bill with Type O Negative. COF put on an amazing show, it was freaky because they had these two demons at either end of the stage on top of the guitar amps & I thought they were just props because they didn't move for a few songs & then all of a sudden they started moving & it was pretty cool. I was there to see Type O Negative as they are my favorite band, at the time COF bassist Dave Pybus was a big part in getting Type O on that your as Type O is Dave's favorite band. Type went on before COF & put on an amazing show! COF went on last because of a production stand point as they had way more props & gear to set up than Type O but both bands kicked ass.

That one is great all throughout, "Nymphetamine" and "Thornography" pretty much as well. - As a musician and listening back, I get the idea they only knew what they were doing after 'Midian'. Which is a decent album, but very hit and miss.

    Dani is just a very down-to-Earth guy... I think it's that British thing... The type that goes "It's bit ridiculous, really." and not taking themselves too seriously. - You also see this in bands like Iron Maiden and woh-evah... But being self-aware is good for one thing, and you still have to believe in what you do to make it work.

    • @rainbowthrustars
      @rainbowthrustars Před 6 lety +3

      LOL yeah as all these black metal clowns you mean who copied these artists right off the bat to use "corpse paint" it looks just as wimpy, as you put it. Personally I couldn't care less about how people want to display themselves. Back in the early 70s as we are talking about now, what they performance wise with their clothes and make up was pretty hardcore for those times, so makes sense to me. I guess they thought it was a cool thing to do and rhymes well with their drugs, booze and pary lifestyles they had. Alice Cooper was so fucking wasted at times he don't even remember some of the albums he has made haha.
      Anyway I'm not so much for Alice Cooper but I remain firm that the very first Kizz album is one helluva good rock n roll album with some of the best drum sounds ever recorded in human history and I don't really bother with any other album they released after that, which made them big.

    The bands they grew up with were good artist for their time. However our generation thrives upon the outcome of years of improvement in the Heavy Metal and Death Metal Genre. For me I became enthralled in Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Behemoth. These are my trio of ultimate metal icons of my generation. Time will tell when the next masters of metal will emerge and take this world by storm.

    • @donavonhoward1899
      @donavonhoward1899 Před 2 lety

      I think of Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Behemoth as the third wave of Black Metal. I am a huge fan of first and second wave Black Metal, but my tastes have always been more geared towards 80's, and 90's American DM, Swedish DM, and late 90's BDM (the New York and Cali bands). Bands like Cradle, Dimmu, and Behemoth appealed to me from a young age around 1999/2000 when Death Metal took a temporary decline in popularity because the third wave BM gave me certain aspects of Death Metal that I always loved while still keeping the signature style of second wave Black Metal. I also loved how there were more slow parts to build a mood. Third wave Black Metal is almost a blend of different styles of Extreme Metal while still retaining the hallmarks of Black Metal. It's basically Black Metal on steroids. I love the Darkthrone, Emperor, Mayhem, Immortal, and early Gorgoroth type of sound, but the third wave Black Metal bands did their own thing with the style, plus they focused more on artistic expression, and epic performances. I also like bands such as Inquisition from America which is another band that deviated in some ways from the second wave of BM. It's like the third wave took ques of what bands like Emperor were doing, but they dropped some of the grittiness, along with the medieval Lord Of The Rings, and D&D vibes. It's not that there is anything wrong with second wave Black Metal. I would love to hear some new bands try to do that second wave style of Black Metal because it's freaking awesome in its own right, but there is something more brutal, dark, and artsy about bands like Cradle, Dimmu, and Behemoth. They create a dark, brutal, but almost beautiful aesthetic in a way. Some BM fans would think of those bands as a disgrace to the genre, but I don't care because I am in it for the music/art itself, not for proving how pure I am as a BM fan. To me, purists limit art.

  • @tristramcoffin926
    @tristramcoffin926 Před 4 lety +1

    I consider Cradle of Filth to black metal rather what Def Leppard was to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. It might seem like a slight to some but it isn't. Like DL Cradle took the aesthetic of the scene and added melody and production value to reach a larger audience. You can hate them for it if you want but it remains well written stuff, most of the time.

It’s a shame that so many so called “black metal fans” can’t open their mind and view filth as the amazing symphonic black metal band that it is. fuck everyone who calls filth “poser” lol in my opinion he’s more real than gaahl, cronos, etc. he is real and he lives his life without a dark black metal fake shroud like all the other “evil” black metal musicians lol. He’s not edgy he is just a straight up guy.
