    Fantastic explanation on what to turn off and what to change in the panel before calibration. Also what settings to use in Calman.

    Nice video. Can you tell why the colour format is RGB Limited 10 bit for SDR? Why not YCbCr that is popularly used for video content?

    • @PortraitDisplays
      @PortraitDisplays  Před 5 měsíci

      That's a great question about calibration formats! We recommend using RGB Limited for calibration because it minimizes conversions and maximizes accuracy. While calibrating in YCbCr is possible, it involves additional conversion steps that might introduce slight errors. By sending RGB directly, we ensure the most accurate and efficient calibration process for your Sony display.

    My recommendation is to don’t touch the RGB bias on the 2 points WB settings or you will raise the black level of the TV to 0.003 nits. At that level of light you’ll also notice heavy dithering.

    Is using calibrated SDR color + Gradation Preferred Tone Mapping + Contrast 90 for Dolby Vision an explicit recommendation from Sony? If so, is it specifically for the A95L, or all new 2023 Sony models?
    From my understanding, the prior recommendation for older models and Dolby Vision was Contrast MAX, No Tone Mapping, and DoVi Dark borrowed nothing from SDR CMS.

    • @PortraitDisplays
      @PortraitDisplays  Před 5 měsíci

      Excellent question! When calibrating a display to a specific target, the process involves using all available controls and adjustments to achieve the desired outcome. Therefore, the recommended practice is to set these controls as needed for your calibration target. You might notice changes from year to year or between models. Additionally, firmware updates from manufacturers can occasionally bring about these changes, albeit rarely.

    Thank you for sharing this!
    I’m confused on one point and wondering if you could clarify. Why set to gamma 2.2, calibrate and switch to 2.4 rather than do the calibration in 2.4 from the start?

    • @CarlTheHaitian
      @CarlTheHaitian Před 5 měsíci +1

      He goes over this around the 6:50 mark. The set "derives" the 2.4 gamma from the calibration of 2.2

    • @davidanonymous4284
      @davidanonymous4284 Před 5 měsíci

      Sonys are meant to be calibrated using its native gamma (2.2) with Contrast set at MAX while viewing content with contrast set at 90.
      You can change gamma after the fact and the panel will "do the math" for you, tracking 2.3 gamma at the -1 setting and 2.4 at -2. SDR RGB balance and CMS accuracy will be maintained.

    • @JonPais
      @JonPais Před 5 měsíci

      @@davidanonymous4284Dday. it writes, “Usually, the software calibrates on the native panel range of 2.2, while with a special LUT invisible to the user, the TV adapts the parameters for other gamma values and the different curves of the various HDR modes. The problem we have encountered is that this does not happen, and once calibration is done in this way, at a value of the "range" parameter of the menu equal to -2 the native range of 2.2 is set. On the other Sony models, the value -2 corresponds to a range of 2.4 usually. But since the minimum value is -3, it is not possible at the moment to get a range of 2.4 in this way. The solution is to proceed with the good old manual calibration.”

    • @davidanonymous4284
      @davidanonymous4284 Před 5 měsíci

      @@JonPais "On the other Sony models...." So, I guess it's an A95L specific issue? If so, the particular demo display used in this video appears to be tracking 2.4 gamma for SDR based on the -2 setting, but I appreciate the info.
      Fortunately, I calibrate my older Sony OLED manually regardless, as I don't use Calman. But typically Portrait's pre-calibration setup is spot on. I'm contemplating making the jump the A95L, so I found the video interesting.

    I’ve heard that QDOLED needs a particularly fine resolution of a couple nm. Does this unit have that?

    • @davidanonymous4284
      @davidanonymous4284 Před 5 měsíci

      Ideally, yes, you'd want to create a profile for your colorimeter, on your specific display, using a reference (5 nm or less) spectroradiometer. This is due to the thin peaks of the spectral power distribution of QD tech, which are too thin to be measured accurately by budget meters.
      The video is using a C7 colorimeter + a "meter profile" a/k/a a spectral correction file available via Calman. These are files which contain the measurement info of a reference spectroradiometer on a particular display tech. In this case, the profile being used is measurement info for a QD OLED.
      The idea is that while you're not using a profile created for your specific display, using a profile created on the same display type should theoretically make your colorimeter more accurate than not using any type of profile at all.

    How can the A95L and CALMAN be enabled to do gamma based picture tracking? For example, If I want to perform a 3D LUT for HDR10, the display needs to have gamma based tracking (not PQ), to be able to provide the max output possible (700-800 nits) with gamma 2.2-2.4, and disable any kind of tone/gamut mapping like is an available option in the LG secret service menu. I believe Panasonic also supports 66-Point Cube 3D LUT for HDR10, and there is a trick to disable the tone mapping. The A95L can have the tone mapping disabled but in order to take advantage of HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping (DTM) via a video processor like an MadVR MK2, there has to be a way to use gamma based tracking to enable properly is my understanding........any chance Sony opens this feature up and/or suggestions? I believe it requires SONY to allow 3DLUT capability as well in CALMAN which I don't believe is currently available, do you know if that will change as well?

    • @PortraitDisplays
      @PortraitDisplays  Před 5 měsíci

      That's a great inquiry! Currently, there isn't a known method to achieve the maximum luminance in Gamma EOTF mode that is possible in HDR (PQ - ST.2084). We suggest reaching out to Sony to request this feature.
