When it comes to movie costumes I will forgive any historical accuracy as long as it's beautiful - that's why I love the costumes in this film! Every dress is beautiful, including the step-mother and step-sisters outfits - I love Anjelica Huston's dresses!

That moment when Danielle gets her wings ripped off by her stepmother always annoys me, because of the way that the prince and king and queen treat her afterwards. I mean, if her mother was a noblewoman, and was worthy of wearing that dress and the other fashionable dresses that Danielle wore under her mother's identity, then Danielle is also a noblewoman and is worthy, by being the daughter of a noblewoman and a nobleman, to wear those dresses, no matter how she's been treated by her stepfamily. The fact that the prince's attitude to her changes, when she's outed by her stepmother, and is disgusted that he's been hanging out with "a servant", rather than being outraged that Danielle, a noblewoman by birth, has been enslaved and abused in her own home, rather than being treated appropriately, is really annoying. Like, how shallow is he? It's not like he's been actually hanging out with someone of the lower classes ... Her stepfamily have been presented to the king and queen and her stepsister has been considered as a possible future wife for him ... But yes, I agree that the costumes in this movie are really nice! I am currently making a ca. 1503 Florentine costume after the portrait of the Mona Lisa, and I should take another look at Ever After to see where seams are placed, etc. since I'm making my own pattern ...

Women rarely inherited titles and paternal lineage was more important. Though her mother was a born a noblewoman, I think Danielle's father was just a rich merchant. So she would only be the daughter of a merchant. She might have some maternal backing, but it seems unlikely, considering it never came up. Either her mother's family had fallen or didn't care about Danielle.
The stepmother on the other hand, was born noble, married a nobleman for her first marriage, and remained the land owner and lady of the house after her second husband passed. Which means there were no male relatives to take over the manor and estates. Essentially, the stepmother was welcomed in court by her own merit and presumed power and thus had more say as opposed to the daughter of a merchant who had fallen to becoming a servant, little better than a slave.
Remember how the stepmother sold the older servant to pay back debts? Yeah.

Danielle, and Cinderella in general, are not actually part of the nobility. In this story, her mother actually wasn't a countess, which is why when the secret gets out, the stepmother says it's laughable that she would call her one. The point of all the Cinderella stories is that the Prince ends up marrying someone of of common birth. That is why it was such a big deal when Kate Middleton married Prince William because while her family had wealth, they were not of the nobility.

I understand that, the prince is not the best , but that is also why he is drawn to her, he is presented at the beginning as immature and apathic character and her passion about her memories of her father inspired him and he evolves as well in the movie and in that moment it was a turning point for him as well and thankfully by Leonardo's intervention he comes to his senses.

I was 19 when Ever After came out and I felt so relatable to Danielle. I had just left home and gotten married. My dad had been verbally abusive towards me since he and my mom reconciled and remarried when I was 10. So I felt like I had transformed from something not wanted into a princess. I had always loved the costumes and wanted to make the library dress. It never happened. As life goes times get hard and you have to focus in on what's important and not little fantasies about dresses and fabric. Then the babies came and the dress was forgotten about. Until your last video came out where to talked about the Breath dress. I hope you have been working on it at least a little bit at a time everyday since the last video. I look forward to seeing the finished dress one of these days.

Also, love that they subtly reference sumptuary laws when Danielle is borrowing the dress from Gustave to save Maurice…it definitely shows Danielle’s courage in more ways than one to help a friend.

Of course, watching it for the first time I had no inkling of the undertones of the costumes and, to be honest, I've never thought of costumes in such a way. Thank you, Marty, for opening up that perspective for me and I have to totally agree with you on the costuming showing that underlying theme of Danielle becoming and progressing to who she really is. ...now I have to wonder if we do that in our own lives? This is one of my favourite movies of all time!! I loved it as a kid when it came out, and I still do as an adult! I'm excited to show it to the littlest kids in my family, and friend group 😁
Watching Ever After as a young girl, it was amazing to see such a wonderful movie, so well done, and so much female strength and empowerment! ❤️ The trailer was on other movies we had on cassette and it ended kind of epically with that camera shot falling toward her saying "Just breathe." *That* stuck with me, and it's actually _even better_ in the movie! (Like, that doesn't always happen 🤨)
Ever After and the book Ella Enchanted came out close together, and they are like two sides of the _best_ Cinderella coin - both strong female-lead stories, one a modern more realistic retelling without magical elements, and the other a book that transported my young mind to a fantasy past and had *so much* magic in it!! Those two are my favourite Cinderella stories of absolutely ever. ❤️❤️❤️

But until then I'm going to make a just slightly more modernized version. Twice. For my winter dresses, one out of merlot wool surge and one out of prussian blue wool surge.
basically I'm going to put buttons on the front instead of lacing up the back, inspired by Princess Grace of Monaco's wedding dress. Pockets. Some, but only some volume out of the sleeves (I don't have enough fabric for that) and instead of those darts in the bosom I am going to pull it into slight blousing in the front, and lower the front waistline by 2" to 4". It will be more flattering on me that way.

Aaaah I also enjoyed the costumes of 2019 Little Women and I feel like I have to conceal that fact from everyone in the universe lol

The 2019 Little Women is the most researched and thoughtfully executed film of Louisa May Alcotts book. A lot of costube was awfully disengenuous about the film and it's intentions. 😤
