Rhythm guitar - Ashok Betty Nelson
    Violin - Govind P Menon
    Keys - Ruthin Thej

Mastered by Vivek Thomas and Joel Wanasek
    Lyrics (English Translation):
At the shore of the glorious sea of expressions
    Under deep meditation, the virtuous art is learned;
Bright, priceless and a true enigma!
Why, then, has the music become so sad and weak that
The player abandons his own shadow; the alter-ego?
Art has become a monstrous ghost of its former self
The ashes of which are worn over and performed!
Dhim thakid dhi thi thai dhim thakitta dhi thi, thai,
Play the beat, step up, the character is ready
Dhim thakid dhi thi thai dhim thakitta dhi thi, thai,
The curtains have drawn, the expressive eyes, throbbing red, doused in wild berry
Dhim thakid dhi thi thai dhim thakitta dhi thi, thai,
Born are the navarasas and the encore of Ashtakalasham
Dhim thakid dhi thi thai dhim thakitta dhi thi, thai,
    Dance away into a trance....
    kidathaka dhim thom
Why, then, has the music become so sad and weak that
The player abandons his own shadow; the alter-ego?
Art has become a monstrous ghost of its former self
The ashes of which are worn over and performed!

This music video has another level. It can be a metaphor for how western and commercial art forms are bullying and killing the traditional art forms. Think of the child as the traditional art form itself. How he is born out of love of the masters of the art form (his parents). The society which understands this art form, which is the village and old patrons, appreciates it. Whereas, the modern society (school going kids) make fun of it. When the child explains the art forms, some kids take interest in it just like how even now many modern kids find deep interest in traditional forms. But, some bullies and corrupted individuals (the tobacco smoking kids) will chase the art form until it falls in oblivion (the well). Where it becomes hidden and dies. Note that the bullies don't explicit kill it with their own hands. They just chase it away. The traditional art forms are just like a little child. Great care needs to be taken to protect it, to support it, otherwise it could just become lost and hidden forever. Brilliant piece of music and video by Thaikkudam Bridge.

I do agree. But I think the bullying is not exactly from western art. That’s an art like any other. It’s the commercial interests behind it that feel need to own the mindshare and wallet share bullying local arts and hollowing out the traditions with labels like “superstition” or “rudimentary” etc. Music for the masses also has to be somewhat reductive to be easy for everyone whereas the traditional art forms need some cerebral exercise to understand and appreciate. I hope we can revive some of these arts in india in where they used to travel and include the locals on a regular basis like a vibrant shared “lived experience” rather than something you have to go buy tickets for like a zoo or museum.

My full support to thaikudam bridge.. I could see good hearted people saying not to fight each other for a song.. But this is not a war but to show respect towards orginals and the artists who spent their energy in creation.. Thaikudam didn't have a movie script to get a thought on creating this beautiful song. I wonder how they got the spark. And it's sad that even though everyone knows thaikudam, people never try to hear their orginals. It's because of our movie based music culture.

In summary the kid is representing the mindshare of the traditional art form of kathakali, parents the artists nurturing the art and the last scene is lord Krishna appearing to the prayers (yellow golden color vesham) of the artists who cry for the future of kathakali.
Whether kathakali will survive and grow or not is upto how much mindshare keralities give to it. If anyone is wondering what happens to the kid and why the video is perhaps shot in this haunting way to remind.

A very powerful subtext. A text becomes double strong when it suits to interpretations on different scales. For a marginal writer this is the story of people on the margins: dalits and blacks. For the cultural studies writer it is a story of the dying art form of kathakali in the never ending wait for Salvation. For a literature student this is a story told in the verses: inner turmoil of the tense characters written in lyrics. For a music lover this is a mystic raga: evoking strange pleasures, the one like the emotion of father holding the child in the first shot. For a painter, the face paint of red and black is aggression and that of green is serenity. For a theatre artist it is bhaava (facial expressions): the scene where even when artist was in roudra bhaava on stage and a kid was terrified, the family was smiling and looking him in awe. That moment defines the admiration for the actor. This work is going to define the parallel malayalam music world.

the only issue is the theme that's shown here is wrongly depicted
that small boy shown in this video will be having heavenly grace from the GOD... these traditional and spiritual folk dance peoples (who sacrifices most of the wordly pleasure just for invoking the divine forces within their physical body are indeed divine and they are not so easily susceptible by outsiders... these people live a highly spiritual, disciplined and truthful life, so that the divine forces may live within them...)
So it's practically impossible to hurt or harm these people and whoever doing so will have to face the ultimate consciousness through the immediate punishments activated by the presiding Deity .... those harmed are mostly seen affected by some chronic disease and some violators are even seen vomiting blood and dies within no time..
So what shown in the video is totally unacceptable and totally untrue
That's why such songs get's unnoticed

However spectacular the video is, it fails if the song doesn't substantiate it. This is where Thaikkudam proves time and again that they are one of the bests in the scene. Such quality theme, visuals and production. The song which begins with a lazy Senavati sound alike violin melody is followed by a the solid riff. Vipin absorbs the right mood through is voice and gracefully sets the context. Through the mid of the song, the snare build up followed by the guitars, taken ahead by the chenda and the kombu - can't ask for more. The whole feel of the song, the chromatic shift between the dhaivathams, perfectly resonating with the mood of the theme from what I felt as the trauma of the bullied outcast.
From what people have stereotyped as a "cover band" (personally I don't think doing covers is bad), Thaikkudam has gone a long way proving what quality is through it's powerful originals. More power to you. More power to independent artists.

Everyone is talking about the composition of Varaha Roopam being inspired by Navarasam. I think that is quite obvious. However, does anyone see that the father-son relationship in Kantara and the fact the son is to follow in the father's footsteps (as part of the story is also inspired by this video) And what about that last shot. It is clearly lifted from here!

I am a big fan of the Movie - but I see now that how SIMILAR the music is. I will feel better if Varaha Roopam makers, acknowledge this openly or atleast state they were mesmerized by this song and took creative inspiration...and share the credit where its due. The movie Kaantara, is a legend and has brought Sanatan Dharma to the forefront - I would request Rishab to come forth and join hands with Thaikkudam Bridge and release a collabortive "re-make" of Varaha Roopam
