Eurasion Magpie: Death Metal screaming - harmless Australian Magpie: Belays the choir of the angels upon you while it's talons are slashing at your head 10/10
eurasian magpies are covids, like crows and ravens, while australian magpies are more closely related to butcherbirds, which might be why they sound so different
How did you go with your home-sickness mate?. I'm a Kiwi, I used to live in Sydney, and I was the same towards the end. Any time there was a TV show about Kiwiland, I would burst into tears.
I went to Australia for the first time a few months ago. Took me a solid month to figure out what this robot sound I was always hearing was and thought for the longest time that it had something to do with the train! I found myself falling in love with, then getting annoyed by the call of a magpie in the short three months I was in Melbourne. Now that I've returned home to eastern Canada I wish nothing more than to be awoken by this song again by the bird sat on a eucalyptus tree outside my window.
Put a covering over the pram or put protective glasses on these birds are protecting their young & try & stay in open areas where there is no trees if possible.
I'm raising a young magpie until it's ready to go into the wild, I played this video and my little mate crouched down, wagged his tail, then turned on his side clutching one of my fingers and made funny sounds for about 10 minutes, it was adorable.
Non-Aussies might not know that these guys are fiercely protective of their nests when they have eggs or chicks. They swoop from trees like dive bombers and have been known to penetrate human heads with their beaks. Amazingly however, I fed a family for a few years and while they would swoop others, they did not do it to me!
***** Yes. Everyday. It is quite funny - the adults will come up to my hand, but the young ones (which are as big as their parents) stay back and skwark until either their parent feeds them or I throw meat to them. (I use dog meat "sausage" as it keeps in the fridge, it is easy to cut and it has added vitamins)
I have a family of them living outside, if I whistle they run over and even take food from my hand. I have never seen them attack anyone around here. I guess they know who feeds them :D
MissFoxification I have just moved house and now I am "cultivating" a new group of baby maggies. They are hilarious! One has learned to sing in order to bring me out to feed them
I've been living in the US now for 6 years and I miss simple things like this and the glimmer of the sun on the ocean. Don't take life in Australia for granted.
Definitely not as intrusive to your morning as being bombarded by cocky squawking...love cockatoos but geeze they can be extremely loud around my place of a morning...anytime of the day actually. It is a lovely song they sing - maggies that is
I don’t remember the sound of magpies around childhood home much. But at my Auntys house in her sweet little post-war cottage on the hill, in the greenest suburb I’d ever seen this was my wake up call every morning. It takes me back to a place I desperately needed in my childhood that was peaceful and safe. It still fills me with peace, comfort and a sense of safety years later.
When I think of Australia, this is the first sound that comes to mind. This sound woke me up almost every morning and it's one of the things I miss most about Australia, because it was so different to any bird singing where I come from.
I’ve raised a few orphaned magpies and they usually don’t need to be force fed after a couple of days. My latest one “Charlie” was still refusing to eat after 5 days so I had to keep force feeding him. I played this clip and he started flapping his wings and squawking for food as soon as he heard the magpie sounds.
Here are some fun facts about Magpies: 1. Magpies are territorial and like to live in the same area for their whole lives. 2. The Australian magpie is native to Australia and New Guinea. 3. Magpies are known for their beautiful, musical warbling. 4. A magpie's hearing is so good they can hear worms and bugs moving underground.
They have extremely good vocal chords as well and are very intelligent. Also once you gain their trust they become very special friends and form a bond with you. We have a family that stop by every day and love hanging out and each one has different personalities. I have some footage of the male one imitating street sounds such as a truck backing up, car alarm going off, a dog down the street barking (its crazy how similar it is) and many more sounds. They are beautiful and misunderstood birds. might upload it to my channel.
The early settlers from the UK who came to Australia named the local bird the magpie because they thought it resembled the UK magpie. Of course the birds are not at all alike.
Wow, talk about a sound triggering memories. That is Aus. Used to live there, moved back to the States. Maybe move back again, depending on what happens in 2020, haha. Good old Australia, I love you my friends.
I have a magpie family that comes for a morsel of meat each day in the spring time every year. Last years' baby Magpie sings at the door and its song includes the sound of siren, a dog barking and many other bird song that is typical in our neighbourhood. They're divine creatures.
Yes !! Their full songbook is unbelievable !! And it is a very varied songbook...I have started feeding , and getting to know , some maggies in my yard , and they are gorgeous !! AND , I won't get pecked next time it is breeding season , and I need to pass the local nests....woohoo !! Win win !! Yeehah !! Love these guys ...thanks crocdoc2 for posting :)
my friends Darby and Joan have come to visit me on my aparment balcony for years. this season they brough Newbie and Legs round to introduce them to me and have them see my face so they'd remember me as a friend. magpies remember faces, and they remember them FOR YEARS. if you frighten them, they'll remember you and swoop you, but if you're their friend, they come round to say hello. when Darby and Joan arrive, they peer through the window to see if i'm inside. if they can't see me, Joan will hop down onto the balcony floor and walk to the next window / door further along and if she sees me inside she'll tap on the glass to let me know and i'll go to the other door, open it and let them inside (they walk inside to eat) and i put out the little minced port meatballs they love. they eat, grunting at each other, then fly away. if they come and they can't see me, they call together, loudly, a special call magpies make which is like 'hey, we're here, are you in there???' it certainly catches your attention and you know exactly who it is... sometimes Joan will sit on the railing and sing to me, just like this for maybe 15 minutes. it sounds so lovelly coming through the house. this year I watched as Newbie had learned to talk, then to sing. now she serenades me... it's kinda special when they choose you to be their friend...

I live close to Sydney CBD and I often hear both magpies and kookaburras calling at the same time during the mornings (sometimes one or two ravens join in as well).
Love the magpie's song, which is why I've found this video, even though I live in Australia and have ones visiting me. But just needed to hear their song now. As I see it, a bird sings to their amazing Creator, it's a hymn of praise.
There was one ina tree I'd walk past every single day when I was going to uni. I gave it snacks every day. Walk into the campus with a magpie on your shoulder during swooping season and nobody is fucking with you 😂😂😂😂😂
One of these boys used to wake me up every morning when I lived in Perth -- he'd obviously heard kids having music lessons because he used to do a flute duet (with himself).
It’s 2:50AM and the magpie outside my house has been doing a mating call for the past hour, I tried whistling at that simp but I couldn’t get his language right through my whistles, now I’m gonna play this video wish me luck

There hve been families of magpies outside my house here in Warrnambool Victoria for years. I now see the parents feeding their babies. Never been swooped once. They see me outside or when the car pulls up and start singing and flying to see me.
I used to hate the sound of Magpies when I lived with my grandparents in the country. Every morning they would wake me with their singing but now having lived in the city for many years I miss them. Sometimes I'll visit CZcams just to listen to a Magpie singing because it reminds me of my Grandma, French toast, a Hot Chocolate and Cheese TV. Those little demon birds certainly have their perks.
What is your closest City? Mine is Brisbane, and I wake up to them every morning (or go to sleep to them singing, depending on how long I'm on my computer for). Beautiful creatures they are.
this is the weirdest-sounding bird i've ever heard because it sounds mechanical. i've heard them in some Australian TV shows and just had to know what they were. thanks for posting this.

The sound of magpies warbling is one of the most beautiful things about Australia. I love hearing it every morning.
They have the most diverse and musical call of all birds. And most of their language is unknown to us
Lol, it sounds like an autistic person trying to sing
The Australian magpies sound nice: our magpies over here in the UK sound like an old hag that just dropped something on her toe.
The more beautiful thing is when the local magpie swoops me every morning and afternoon despite the fact I don't go anywhere near their nest.
Yes love this sound.

I'm an Aussie living in Scotland and cried listening to this. I'm so homesick.
It's such an Australian sound, isn't it.
I fed 2 today and 10 of their friends came from nowhere, they're so tame. All of them were within 5 metres of me.
