  • Making a tube guitar amp from a Mojotone kit. The kit is a copy of the 1950s vintage Gibson GA-5 practice amp. The amp is 5 watts with a 12AX7 preamp tube and a 6V6 power tube. This is not really a how-to video so much as it is a demonstration of how a novice can reasonably expect to complete a build like this. This video shows the electronics. A subsequent video will show the making of the cabinet.

I loved the electrical excursion away from knife making. Furthermore, speaking as an musician and electrical engineer, you did an amazing job.

As an electronics guy, I can assure you that the manufacturer has picked an inconvenient build order for the kit. Normal practice is to start with the lowest profile parts and build up to the tallest which makes access so much easier. Secondly, drilling out solder that is clogging up a hole is normal practice; iv been involved in the industry for over a decade and I still do it on an almost weekly basis. Overall you did a great job with the kit; It looks and sounds amazing.

That amps a great platform for pedals as you may know. A tube screamer type pedal or even an eq pedal (best secret weapon) will definitely help give you the mid push you're looking for. Great playing and great choice for an amp kit!!

As a professional guitar player I have often thought of building an amp. But I never could talk myself into it. But I think you did quite well.

Easily $350 worth of fun. I'm here for the knife making but as a guitar player myself, I really appreciate the amp build. I've built some pedals from kit, and a hifi amp but haven't done a guitar amp yet. Thanks for the inspiration. Nice playing by the way!

I've built a few Mojotone amp kits. I like them. So far it sounds like your experience with the directions is on par with mine lol I'll take point to point over turret boards

I had a good friend who was into electronics and he made me the first electric guitar amplifier I ever played back in 1962. Only speakers we had were two 6X9 ovals from a car radio and even wired a diode into the speakers for fuzz tone ! Sounded dang good. I was an instant rock star in my mind, lol. You play pretty good guitar Mr. Sorrells.

Very cool, I usually am here for the knifes, but it was cool to see you make a guitar amp. Just a guy with average electrical knowledge building a sweet sounding little amp.

Man, if I could have just a 1/16 of the equipment I've lost over the years. Now I just do it all on my computer(drums & all. I do have a set too). Dad was a jazz bassist, I was a musician before I could walk. Most don't like it as background music for knifemaking, but oh well... Got my degree as a computer tech, who knew there was another CZcamsr/knifemaker/musician that liked electronics too, hahaha. Hope all is well, take it easy.

This was awesome! I dug the trip down memory lane and the side project. Always grateful for all the content. :)

Thanks for the video. This gave me a more realistic review of building the amp BEFORE I put 4 kits in the hands of 11-14 year old students.
