    Agree about Best of/Greatest Hits vinyl records which I tend not to own. So instead I keep them around in CD format which is usually reserved for those casual/half-listening focused sessions.

    I have to start purging. Space is the main problem, but not finding a record that I want to hear without a lot of effort is important. Looking through boxes of records to get the one you want is a real chore and ruins the whole experience.

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety

      That doesn't sound ideal, especially for your back 😁 Just wonder if you can ever solve the space issue; more space for me just means I fill it up in no time and back to square one. 😂😂

    I am very much like you in that I have records constantly coming into the collection and going out. I love Colemine records as well. I agree about the Kelly Finnigan album. I ended up enjoying and keeping the instrumental RSD release of the album without his vocal. It's much more to my liking. I really enjoyed this video and subscribed to the channel. Keep the videos coming!

    I'm the daughter of jazz pianist/composer Russ Freeman.
    I see that you have multiple recordings of his work with Chet Baker. Perhaps in your vast collection, you also have my Dad's records with Shelly Manne, Art Pepper, Benny Goodman, and other greats.
    As for me, I have the world's most complete collection of my Dad's recordings on vinyl and CD, all in minty-fresh condition, and a mountain of assorted West Coast jazz LPs.
    If you ever want to compare, trade, buy, or sell, feel free to get ahold of me here on the Tube anytime... Keep on swinging, man! :)

    Great topic and video. I not good at purging, but really should be. One of the reasons is that I live in an area of the world where it's hard to come by records, so nothing is easily replaced. Another reason is that my taste has matured over the years, and some of the things that I didn't like ten years ago are now favorites. So deciding what to purge is really hard, but I'm working on it. I collect both CDs and vinyl, and my CDs are more and more becoming a library of music, while my vinyl is "the collection" and where I go when I really want to sit down and have a focused listening session. I have a long term goal of only owning 1000 vinyl albums, all of which should be stellar.

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety

      That is actually a great point though, that your location and access to record stores will affect your purging style. I am lucky to live in San Francisco where there are tons of good stores, so it is 'easy' to come by records, which probably makes it easier for me to let go of things.

  • @dank.6942
    @dank.6942 Před 2 lety +2

    I do have some titles where I've kept 2 copies, usually an OG and a good remaster, but I am similar to you otherwise, in the sense that I purge and upgrade. Cheers!

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety +1

      To be perfectly honest, I would love to have an OG, especially of the jazz releases, and a good reissue as they many times sound better, but it really comes down to space. Have two of the same, or two different ones? I guess the solution is a bigger house ;)

    I started purging records about 5 years ago. This happened because I changed my philosophy of what I wanted my collection to be. Before I wanted a wide variety of music. Something for everyone. I have since decided to narrow it down to what I really like. I got rid of hundreds but now it is getting harder.

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety +1

      It getting harder is probably a good sing in my opinion. And I think you bring up a good point; it is important I think to have a collecting philosophy, some guidelines to what kind of colector you are, to help navigate the avalanche of records available. I think most of us start (me included) and we are kids in a candy store and we just go crazy... 😁

  • @TurboYeti72

    This video couldn't be more timely. I'm going through a purge right now. Re-listening to a lot of "7s" to see if they make the cut or not. It's a tough but necessary step. Like you, I want a collection that doesn't have any duds. I've also set a limit of 888 records. I like the number, but more importantly, I feel like I won't have to build a shed to store the overflow.

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety

      Sheds are not great... 😁 But I think you are right, we need some kind a limit, a number or a piece of furtniture or whatever, or otherwise it easily goes out of control

      @@SonicSafari fairly substantial. About 2/3 of my stored vinyl has been replaced. A lot of obscure ‘90s and some great ‘80s albums, all in NM condition. Adopting the approach you note, where I can blindly pick a record from the shelf and know why it is in the collection.

    A local collector "purged" 30,000 records. It really looked like he bought every record he saw. None of the rock was for sale. A lot of junk, but we all went to see what we could find for $1-$3 dollars each. He probably was left with 1/2 of it. It's hard to get rid of records when anything affordable I see is lesser quality by a lot.

    • @SonicSafari
      @SonicSafari  Před 2 lety
