  • The week after Valentines everything bloomed on the Flower Farm. Ironic. I’ve felt a bit run down since Valentines and ended up with a chest infection- not fun. Sometimes Flower Farming can be so exhausting, despite the amazing lifestyle it allows us to have. Sometimes we have to sit back and really consider what we achieved to undertand, Even for ourselves, how big this is. Right now the farm is looking promising of providing amazing autumn fall blooms - as long as we dont get an early frost.

    BACK STORY
    May 2020 we started a flower farm in North East Victoria, Australia. Moroni, utilising his Agricultural Engineering skills, and Phaedra drawing on her years of artistic pursuits. Neither of us had grown flowers, neither had farmed. We didn't have any large equipment, and we had started up on a very tight budget.
    Our climate zone is: In Australia we are right on the edge of Mild Temperate (Zone 6) and Cool Temperate (Zone 7). In the USA this is close to zone 8B. Our lowest temperature in Winter is around -5 degrees Celsius, our top temperature in Summer reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius at least a couple of times each Summer.
    This is the story of our farm, our florist business and our lifestyle. Enjoy!
    🌸 Flowers make us, and others, happy 🌸

      Hi Kat and Justin! Thankyou! The lack of Summer flowers gave us a bit more time to work on things! Xx

    I grow my vegies with my flowers every year and it works really well. Your shade loving lettuce, swiss chard, kale, etc. will like their fall planting where there is too much shade in the fall for sun loving flowers.
    You can edge a bed with hardneck garlic to keep floppy flowers from flopping over.

      Oh that garlic tip is such a good idea!!!! This is going to be such an exciting venture next season I can’t wait!!!!

    🤣 that beginning!

  • @ButterflyBox89

    Stem length is triggered by daylight length - or to put it more accurately the plants flower when the daylight hours hit a certain time length. You’ve had the plants go through floods and intense heat which arrested growth so once the daylight length gets to a certain point the flowers are just triggered into blooming regardless of desired stem length. (Natures fail safe for procreation) this is why people often struggle with crops like sweet peas or stock because if you don’t give them enough time to grow you will just get short stems as the plant is receiving the signal to flower regardless of how tall it is.

      Ah yes.. we are always racing nature 😫. Which is still kind of a beautiful thing really. Nature has just been a bit rough on us this season!!

    The beginning says it all, wowza, it was a long week for you guys, glad it was worth it. I'm going to try and figure out companion planting the veg this yr. Gardeners World shared an allotment gardeners veg garden, it was beautiful, she mentioned the entire garden was companion planted. Hope you guys have a much needed relaxing weekend.

      Hi Wende!! Me too!! Haha. I can’t wait, I’m so excited to grow flowers and veggies all together!!!

    I started with vegetables and some flowers. I know what varieties of veg I want to eat so I’m not in that new gardener experimental stage anymore which helps with maximizing space. I transitioned my back garden to (cutting) flowers + veg last year. I cannot tell you how magnificent the pollinators and birds were in the garden. Best decision.😊

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs Před rokem +1

      I do the same and the pollinators go wild on the tomatoes, etc.

      @phaedragardeness  Před rokem

      I can’t wait!!! Do you follow FarmLuxe on Instagram? She does it and hers is magical but the food coming from her garden is amazing and abundant and I bet pollinators are her secret weapon!!

    Everything is looking good. Look forward to the new veg/flower patch. I’m doing a bit of that this year too.
    Plus trying to plant some marigolds and garlic among the veg to keep bugs away.

    Hello gorgeous one! Great tour and wonderful to see everything bouncing back and surviving! Definitely the season of survival of the fittest 😅 all my blooms started going nuts as soon as Valentine’s Day went by, and I planted red dahlias for it too, thinking I’d have bountiful supply of a red alternative to roses 😆 oh well, nxt year…..!! I love statice too and I’ve planted a whole lot more, it’s such a work horse! Loved the aerial views hun! Have a great week! 💓💐💓

      Hello! It’s a Bolens Horse Rotorvator. It has a Briggs and Stratton motor we think and it has 4 blades so it’s a good width. We found it 2nd hand and are really happy with it. It has been a gamechanger for us, we can get so much more work done now. Worth the money.
