  • The Swanage Railway would break preservation records with their "Strictly Bulleid II" Steam Gala, as they played host to 8 Bulleid pacifics; held over the weekend of June 7th-9th.
    The original "Strictly Bulleid" took place back in 2017, with 5 pacifics descending on the Isle of Purbeck. For this second edition, the Swanage Railway managed to gather 8 Bulleid pacifics for the event. Representing the Rebuilt light pacifics would be 34028 "Eddystone" and 34053 "Sir Keith Park", both appearing courtesy of Southern Locomotives Ltd. Representing the Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' Class, would be 35006 "Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co." and 35018 "British India Line"; visiting the Isle of Purbeck courtesy of the 35006 Locomotive Company Ltd, and West Coast Railways respectively. Finally, a quartet of original Bulleid power. 34070 "Manston" and 34072 "257 Squadron", another pair from the SLL stables, would be joined by 34081 "92 Squadron" and 34092 "City of Wells". 34081 and 34092 would be visiting courtesy of the Battle of Britain Locomotive Society and the East Lancashire Railway respectively.
    The gala would feature a very intensive timetable, with services regularly going 'over the road' and onto the Wareham extension as far as River Frome Viaduct, which serves as the current limit of SR metals. As such, services from Swanage would gain a tail locomotive at Corfe Castle before before continuing west, due to the absence of a run-around loop on the extension. In addition, most double-headed services would also see the lead locomotive detatched at Norden. For the first time since 2003, the Swanage Railway would run trains through the night, with "The Knight Rider" service taking place from Saturday evening through into Sunday morning. Sunday would run with the theme "Named Train Sunday", with all services carrying headboards representing some of the prestigeous titled services that could once be seen across the southern region. Sunday evening would see a gala finale, as the four operational SLL pacifics would be lined up on display at Corfe Castle. Unfortunately, 34081 "92 Squadron" failed on the Saturday morning, with 34070 "Manston" taking over its duties.
    Having 8 Bulleid pacifics in service together would result in breaking some preservation records:
    - The largest gathering of Bulleid pacifics in steam since 1967.
    - By all accounts, more Bulleid pacifics in steam than on the final day of steam on the southern region, 9th of July 1967.
    -The largest gathering of Bulleid pacifics since the days of Woodhams Scrapyard in south Wales.
    - The first time in preservation that any heritage railway has hosted two working 'Merchant Navy' pacifics simultaneously.
    In addition, it was less than two weeks ago that SLL achieved the major milestone of having four of their pacifics in steam simultaneously. This event marked the first time those four have appeared in service together.

    You can’t beat a nice soft chuff. That’s what I say. Something Bullied Pacific’s are good at. As always outstanding photography.

    A superb record of a wonderful weekend, Matt. You did well to cover so many different locations on what was a very busy weekend. An event that will live along in the memory - hats off to all the organisers and volunteers who made it such a success!

    Footnote:
    This video is very far removed from what was originally hoped for. Things quickly fell apart behind the camera, with various tripod problems among other issues plaguing the weekend. The video has still been uploaded for record sake, but the experience has certainly provided some lessons to learn. That said, here's hoping that the event was a major success for the railway.

    Wonderful. As usual, yours is the most accomplished and watchable compilation I’ve seen (despite the issues you mention). Loads of very nicely considered shots - and the endless Bulleids (and green coaches) look just great!

    That was worth the wait Matthew, so glad I didn't go over to the datk side and watch some of the other offerings. What a sight, especially the headboards and Fleche D'or, they stirred up a few grey cells!!! A couple of new locations?? One thing missing - Q1, that would have made a proper Bulleid extravaganza, but don't think that'll happen again?? Thanks as usual for your dedication, hope the pollen count stayed low and the tripod behaved itself.

      Thank you very much, Bob! The kind words are always appreciated!
      Having missed out on the titled trains 7 years ago, and feeling quite regretful about it, it made sense to take full advantage this time around.
      A couple of lesser used locations, especially those between Norden and Wareham. The Q1 would make a wonderful addition. Fingers crossed for one of the future editions.
      Since filming the West Hill clips for "Strictly D-Day", the tripod simply hasn't worked smoothly. The legs suffering torsion during panning, while the tilt axis of the head has kept jamming mid-shot. It's resulted in a lot of frustration and second-guessing while filming, which ultimately has led to quite a few mistakes in this video. As for the hayfever, it was awful all weekend.

    Top video! Perfect record of the weekend, a shame 92 failed given its vibrant Malachite but hey these things happen. Thanks for putting together such a brilliant film of the event.

      Though it looks like evening light, it's actually very early morning - somewhen before 6am (the previous clip at Haycrafts Lane was taken at 5am).

    Two MN s banking with a BB up front? A bit extravagant on 7 coaches. Congratulations to Swanage. Hope they had enough visitors to cover the coal bill. Great video. Great fun

      The two MN's were just idling. So 257 was lifting all the weight at that point - over 500 tons worth.

      All trains to and from Bridge 4 at the River Frome have to be top and tailed and the instruction is that the loco on the back does not provide any assistance, all the work is done by the loco on the front.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev Před 15 dny

    Far removed from what was hoped for? I think it's one of the best of the weekend. We'll done for recognising that the most important thing is that the locos are working hard, and not eschewing tender-first shots if the sound's good. 8:45Now that's quite a challenge; 6 coaches plus two locos on the other end! 😂

  • @thecornishsteamtrain123

    What a fantastic cinematic video of the amazing Strictly Bulleid gala. I’m absolutely gutted I missed it as it seemed to give Swanage railway a lot of fame especially with 8 bulleids, the biggest gathering since 1967. I really hope they do this again and maybe not during my dreaded GCSEs. Be proud of yourself because this is quality😎👍🚂. Also, how do you find all these amazing positions to see them from? Is there a map

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 14 dny +1

      Thank you. The kind words really do mean a lot, and are greatly appreciated.
      With any luck, in years to come, we may get "Strictly Bulleid III". Who knows which ones will be steaming when that rolls around.
      For the locations, a lot of it comes from experience, having been to and filmed at all the locations previously. Your best bet is check on maps, and any available map of public footpaths. That said, there is no public parking at a few of these locations, and always respect the land owners.

    Why wasn’t 35028 here? It was just finished with its overhaul

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před 15 dny +3

      Because 8 Bulleids is already a mega achievement, and resulted in a saturated timetable. There is a balance point between getting another loco in, vs any extra bums on seats it could bring in.
      In any case, 35028 was tied up with its contract with Belmond.
