    This video demonstrates how to use the Winsor & Newton Liquin family of mediums. It compares them to traditional oil painting mediums and explains their individual properties. It also includes a step-by-step guide for how each medium affects the opacity, transparency, consistency and flow of oil colour.

    Wow I didnt realise you could use that much liquin original with a dob of paint that size! I was using a tiny amount relative to paint amount and was really going through the paint. Now I think my paint will flow on a lot better and go a lot further. I had been hoping to do a big canvas one day but was dreading the paint cost since I didnt understand how to use liquin. Thank you Sir!

    Hi Ken.
    Very helpful and informative video. I've just started working at an art shop and I needed to know the general uses and possibly be shown how to use the mediums in order to see what effect they had with oil paints and you just nailed everything I needed to know.
    Thank you v much.

    Hi there! Fantastic video - it can be so hard to get reliable information about all this stuff! The last medium demonstrated (the oleopasto that gives volume without adding texture) seemed like it would be great for a tonal underpainting, where I'm looking to cover large sections with nice smooth, even paints that I can paint over a week later. But I was wondering if that medium adds to drying time?

    Thanks for the informative video. One thing im trying to find out about liquin mediums (in particular liquin original) is can they be used as a glazing medium over a painting that has been painted without using liquin mediums or cobolt drier. It seems to me that using a fast drying medium as a glazing medium contradicts with the fat over lean rule ie. slow drying layers over fast drying layers. Would be great if you could shed light on this issue.

    I have started painting for the first time and i have acquired W and N water mixable oil paints. Many tutorials say that we should not use the paint straight out of the tube, they also explain what mediums do etc, however there is no video showing the beginner exactly what to do to prep the paint for use when it comes out of the tube. Wany tutorials show the pallet and the colour mixing process, but I never see them add any medium. Their paint has a lovely cosistancy, not at all like what came out of the tube - but how did it get that way? Can you explain or direct me to a video that explains what to do and how to organise for doing it effortlessly please?

    With so many ''artist quality mediums'' available then why has Winsor and Newton CHOOSEN to supply most of their paints in student quality?
    Both their Water soluble and Alkyd paints are lacking those really stable and opaque paints, namely the Cadmiuns, Cobalts together with those exotic colours such as Cobalt turquoise and Cobalt violet.
    Recently they introduced a series of hues in the Cadmiums together with other colours also. Instead of stamping their name on the quality of Artist quality paints available they are now in the business of producing student grade paints, well in most of their ranges anyway.
    If one is looking for a really quality paint that produces artist grade colours that are buttery from the tube then they really need to take a good look at Holbeins Due water soluble oils. They do produce their paints with some of the best materials available. Not only that, their water soluble paint can be mixed with watercolours, gouache and acrylics. Can WN paints be used with other mediums.
    Another company that uses artist grade colours in their Alkyd paints is Gamblin FastMatte Alkyd Oil Colors. They use Cadmiums, Cobalts and other compounds that ensures that the artist is being offered the ultimate in Alkyd paints.
    If you're an artist then compare W and Newtons paints against those offered by Holbein and Gamblin and read the reviews. Its time W and N started listening to the artist instead of reducing the quality of the paints they offer.
    READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!

    I have heard that Winsor and Newton sold to China. I have noticed a great loss in the quality of the canvas and other products. I will not buy from them any longer. Too bad - China has always lacked in any quality. Too bad we all suffer the loss in quality for cheaper items. (2019)

    • @Artworkbyautumn
      @Artworkbyautumn Před 9 lety +2

      No, you must still wait at least 6 months to a year before you varnish it. Also, Liquin CANNOT be used as a varnish. Before you try varnishing or using Liquin on a good painting, test all that out on a scrap painting first. Lachri Fine Art has some very informative videos regarding all this. You should check her out on CZcams. Happy painting! :)

    • @v0lc0mstoned
      @v0lc0mstoned Před 7 lety

      Jon Focker that is completely wrong. You want to wait at least 6 months before you varnish a painting. Some people get away with a shorter time frame, but never less than two months. And that's with very thinned out paint, Ala prima, and painting very thinly.

    • @infowazz
      @infowazz Před 7 lety

      Gamvar has worked for me many times. but maybe "dry to the touch" is wrong even though its said u can do that. i'd wait a couple weeks.

    by the way, mediums is fine as in plural. The 'media' plural is more commonly associated with plural verbs. This medium comes from the medical medium (noun) which can be media or mediums in plural. So he is right. Eg 2 psychic mediums. I don't think that would work as a couple of psychic media!

      Google it and you will see the safety precautions you will need to take. I have several artist friends who have used it like over 20 years and love it and have no problems with it. BUT they all say you must have good ventilation in the air around you when you use. If you use it in a tiny closed in room it will give you a headache that can last a long time.
