Not sure why I watched all the other videos before I found yours!!! Thank You so much for truly doing a STEP by STEP. Not inky that but over and over. Perfect man!!
Such a clear, informative and well paced instructional video. I appreciate your ability to clearly convey the concept using examples without extraneous information. You are a great teacher Thanks
I actually learned centering from this video, not my teacher. I’m now the only one in my course that can center every size of clay up to 4 kilos...every time. I’m secretly teaching the others 🤫
Been throwing for awhile & this is the most helpful thing i’ve seen & heard & the parts that i am still having a tough time with!! Thank you SO MUCH FOR putting this on you tube!!!
I like the method how you open the piece with your fingers on the slant and return back to center. Shall have to try that! That is a technique I have not seen before.
I just recently started a class and I am so eager to try these methods. And why am I picturing Chris Pratt as pottery teacher? Thanks for sharing this stuff!
It looks like the first lump got 5 rings of mixed up clay vs the second lump got 14 ish because you coned up more times during the second lump. So how many times of coning up is 'enough' for the purpose of homogenisation? Or is it just that if we cone then the clay would be easier to work with [versus not coning up and go straight from wedged clay on wheel to centering/pulling up without coning?]
so when you're using friction to swirl the clay more, are you still leaning to clay to one direction to prevent the mushroom shape? Thank you so much, these videos are amazing!
I have a question, recently I got an interest in pottery, and I want to make some pottery. So I bought some tools, clay and a wheel. But the wheel is a non electric one. Is it still possible to make pottery with out a self rotating wheel?
Hey Tim.....how much clay can be centered using this technique? Seems at some point the ball of clay would be too big to leave your hands on the bat. Thank you for doing this!
You cone much less high than I have been. Since I have stubby childlike fingers, is it still possible for me to cone up high enough to be effective and still get my cone down hand up over the top of the cone without losing contact with my wheel head hand? It starts to feel like I am not getting anywhere very fast with bigger small balls of clay as I can only go up a wee bit before running out of reach. If I can only cone up a half inch or inch, is that doing anything? Does that mean I need to do it twice as many times as a person with long fingers? Thanks!
I also have small hands with rather short fingers and it takes me quite a while to get my clay centered though I'm slowly improving. I'm hoping some of the tips from this video will help me do it better and more quickly. I can still cone up pretty high - that is not my problem; I don't think that your right hand has to always be touching the wheel head does it or did I miss something?

Thanks
Nòoooooooooo
This is, by far, the most explanatory video out there. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge. You rock.
Thanks Tim. You help me so much. 😊

Good on you. Teaching is a talent not all instructors have. Tim has it, and perhaps you do too.
Chaotic Good energy
@UsernamesForDummies How was your teaching you to centre your clay?
That's awesome!
I picked up centering pretty quickly, but can't teach others how to for the life of me.
Ttsdh
Fantastic. The two color clay really brought it home for me. 'Gotta see it... thanks for that!
My husband and I just started taking pottery lessons and you are awesome. I plan on showing our instructor how to do it! Thank you!

You're such a cool teacher! Also I love your cat pictures, it adds a whole cozy atmosphere to your videos :3
Love the color contrast--that made it so clear!! Thanks!

This REALLY helped me understand the purpose of centering- best video on this yet! Thank you :)
I have learnt more and better from watching your videos than going to in person classes ( paid ) !!!
Stellar teacher. Makes all the difference. Thank you
Thank you very much! now i understand the purpose of thorough centering much better.
I just recently started a class and I am so eager to try these methods. And why am I picturing Chris Pratt as pottery teacher? Thanks for sharing this stuff!
Wonderful instructions! I am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you so much for making and sharing!
Thankyou for your videos, I've been struggling with centering , off to my she shed to try again using this method.
your video is very useful for me, and the example is very clear to understand.
Thank you. great video!
Thanks for the great explanation, it was really interesting! I hope you get paid good money for teaching your skills to others!
11:49 Me when I write my thesis and start making up words to reach the minimum word count.
Wow!
Very cool video and explanation!!
Thanks for such a wonderfully helpful video!
Brilliant! Thank you!
Brilliantly explained.. thank you!

Super helpful, thank you brother
this almost makes sense.... so new but loving this info

So the second way of coning the clay is more a way to actually "stir" the clay?
wow that was awesome
Yes homogenization is a word! We use it a lot in biochemistry and cell biology lab work.
I tried the centering and just got too much skirt. Your method seemed much more arduous because I have smaller hands.
Same. I have tiny hands.
Thank you tim😃
Nice experiments
So cool thank u
Is it lame that I’m using my footstool to practice??? 😂 I don’t have a wheel yet…
When I do this my cone breaks lmao

El-Nino HYK yep sure can

yep thats like 3lbs, but once we get a handle on wheel speed and how it relates to upwards movement it's easily dealt with

Can you reuse the clay once it's been mixed?
Marina Galasso yep my normal clay is a mix of 5 clays.
Aren't orange cats the best?
R Riddle no 😂
did you just meow lmao
