Thank you for this video. I thought it was just me having dizziness, nauseous and sometime spinning episodes, but after reading all the comments, I can see that I'm not alone. I've spent time in the hospital (5 days) and been referred to specialist, had MRI's and CT scans, but there are no clear answers. Its very hard to live life this way.

Thank you Dr Jon for all your videos. They are one of the best I've seen on youtube regarding dizziness. I have TMJ / TMD, I'm missing rear molars on one side of my mouth, throwing my bite off, giving me jaw, ear pain, also have headaches, I'm told could be from TMJ. But anyway now in process of getting implants to correct my bite. I've seen so many Dr's ENT, Neurologist, Cardiologist, Mri's, blood work etc. all negative. So just hoping for the best. Thanks again!

Hi Doctor, this is a great and simple explanation of causes of dizziness. I am sure it will help many people. I have been suffering from vertigo and dizziness for over 4 years, after a two severe BPPV episodes. I can manage it now and I find that I have two types - from the inner year (mostly happens after sleepless night. I do Epley, or other maneuvers) and cervicogenic which I manage self-massaging neck and SCM specifically, and all neck muscles. I wish I found such video 4 years ago - it would save lots of frustration. Thank you and enjoy your weekend!

Direct speech AWESOME content! Extremely helpful! Found comments depressing over something of a subjective condition to diagnose and treat. Personally, steering towards PPPD. As with many cures many tiny elements contribute to become a big thing. For me, eustachian blockage, anxiety, lack of sleep and blood pressure medications contributing factors.

I started out with vestibular migraines. No answers from docs until I went to a pain clinic. In 10 minutes he diagnosed it as cervicogenic dizziness. Had an MRI and my neck is a mess! I have a type of arthritis called DISH. It was finally picked up a couple of years after my MRI of my head and neck. It showed a lot of bone deposits on my anterior cervical vertebrae, causing decreased motion and occasional choking. On further follow up, my entire spine and vertebrae are in rough shape. Keep pushing your doctors.

Thank you Doc! This is probably the best explanation of the potential causes of dizziness. I've been struggling with dizziness(woozy feeling) at random times in the day for probably a month or few. Sitting down and laying down seems when it's worse. My neck is really tight and I get regular massages but that doesn't seem to help. I feel like my ears are half plugged(not too bad). I don't have health insurance, so that makes it difficult to go to the doctor for check ups and diagnosis. :/

Just had a whole lot of tests done that show absolutely nothing. Will ask my body soon via kinesiology through a naturopath what's going on. At least you provide some possibilities to work with. I used to have bad meniere’s attacks with roaring tinnitus and severe vertigo that lasted from 1.5 to 4.5 hours. Hello Dr Saunders, I wanted to get more advice from you. Since the last time I commented, I was kind of distressed because I wasn't sure what was causing my dizziness. I will try to be brief. It turns out that I did indeed still have bppv. I had a real bad spinning episode last night trying to go to the bathroom and today at work I was kind of miserable. I decided to try the epley maneuver again. The first time I had a mild reaction starting with the left side and that was it but I completed the procedure. A few minutes later I decided to start with the right side and I got a major reaction starting on the right side. The spinning didn't last very long but it was very intense so that told me that I was doing it right but treating the wrong side at first. After the right side calmed down about a minute later, I went to the the left ear and nothing really happened. Then I completed the procedure by turning to the left and looking down and once again for about 6-8 seconds I had a major spinning reaction so I stayed there for a minute. I did have a little residual dizziness which is to be expected and I'm being careful about not looking down and keeping my head straight as possible for about 24 hours. I wanted to ask what else should I do since this maneuver does appear to be working for me. How long should it take for me to feel total relief. I'm probably going to do the epley maneuver again tomorrow after work unless you recommend that I wait another day or so. But I just wanted to ask how many more times should I do the epley maneuver and when should I expect relief. I'm hoping this will cure my off balance problem and so forth.

    • @drjonsaunders
      @drjonsaunders  Před 2 lety +1

First, please see your doctor for the correct diagnosis...once you are 100% certain you have BPPV from your doctor, then either they can help you with the Epley or you can try on your own...in my experience, you should start with the worst side and continue until it is resolved...could take 5-10 times over a number of days...then move on to the other side...if it still persists, please go back to your doctor to make sure nothing else is causing it...sometimes it may be coming from a different part of the inner ear...all the best.

I like your show I've had vertigo for many years, my first experience was when I went to get up in the morning and I fell over I could not find the bedroom wall and ended up in the hospital he checked all my vitals and they're fine, he asked me to walk towards him and caught me on my down to the floor so he gave me a needle of gravel and about 10 or so minutes I was able to walk out of the hospital with no problem. But I still have the odd episode once in a while it still happens even even when I look up. I also get motion sickness but having peppermints seemed to help I don't get it.

But now years after I decided to go for my arm , that have been week for years , now I understand that a neck can cause it . I'm not having a MRI now because I told them about my arms , I wished I'd have known this . But I do have vitomen d deficiency to . I'm hoping that I don't have ms because now I have tested positive for Hoffman's and Babinski. I was also attacked by a violent ex boyfriend who tried to kill me and nearly broke my neck in a choke hold . That was over 20 years ago . Not long after my dizynes started and at ears . Hello Dr Saunders, I wanted to ask another question. Just a little while ago, I once again performed the epley maneuver on myself twice within a 5 minute of each other. And during both times I had no reaction or heavy spinning like I did yesterday which was no big deal. Do I need to keep doing this maneuver if I don't have any more reaction spinning wise? Does this mean that the crystals are probably where they need to be? I will say that yes I am still feeling off balance and I have read in many articles that this is a common complaint after the epley has been successfully completed and I still might have off balance symptoms for a few days or so. But if I don't get any more reactions to the epley, should I stop doing it and let nature take its course and just let the brain and ear canal readjust? And yes I have been talking to my doctor about this on and off for about a year and he basically just tells me to keep doing vestibular therapy on my own. And I had a feeling I would get a good reaction from the epley yesterday which I indeed did. I slept on my back last night with an extra pillow and will do so again tonight and maybe tomorrow night just to keep my head adjusted. But I wanted to know if I need to keep doing the maneuver or wait and see how things go. I'm guessing my symptoms will get better day by day.

I also have arthritis and compressed discs in my neck thoracic spine and lower spine so I really need help after all these years I can’t go anywhere alone I need to hold on to a trolleys or an arm , I really need help or advice. Hello Dr Saunders, I just wanted to make a few comments, nothing bad. I have suffered from vertigo on and off for several years. My last vertigo episode was late July of last year when I rolled quickly to my left side in bed and the spinning sensation hit me for may 10 seconds. Since then the residual effects have been bothering me and still do today. I have had no more spinning sensation but I am still constantly dizzy most of the time, especially when I stand up and walk around. I have been to the doctor and have been through 2 different physical therapists who both did the epley maneuver on me many times but it never helped and I had no reaction. I was shown many vestibular exercises which I tried for a few weeks but never seemed to do any good either. I had a brain mri done which was clear and I also had a procedure done to check the arteries in my neck which was clear as well. I recently started doing the vestibular exercises again on my own in one of your videos to see if they might help. I honestly don’t know the verdict yet but I have been doing them for a few days. I mainly notice my off balance issue at work when I’m looking into the microscope at work because I have to move my head a lot on the job. And again I notice that I’m really off balance when I get up and stand and when I walk. I also notice it in the shower. I honestly don’t know what type of dizziness I have but I personally have ruled out bppv because I recently tried the epley maneuver on myself again about 3 times and there was no reaction. You have mentioned cervicogenis dizziness which I am sure I just misspelled and I have heard of pppd which might be a possibility. I guess I’m asking you for any possible advice because as I mentioned earlier I have been to my doctor and therapists and I have been a an ent doctor. This did actually clear up for about a week and a half but it came back. It doesn’t hurt or anything but it is bothersome and besides the exercises I don’t know what else to do but if worse comes to worse I will have to accept this as something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life and hopefully not go on disability for it. I realize my attitude here is not the best but I need someone to understand that the so called professional people in my hometown don’t seem to really know what to do. Again I hope you have some decent advice for me.

    • @drjonsaunders
      @drjonsaunders  Před 3 lety +13

Thank you for your comment and post...definitely doesn't sound like BPPV anymore...glad you have ruled out many other potential causes - it iis VERY frustrating trying to manage dizziness when you aren't sure of the cause. Reading through your comment, I suggest you bring up PPPD with your doctor and cervical vertigo (cervicogenic dizziness). Sometimes it can take MONTHS to notice improvement after doing the cervicogenic dizziness exercises AND vestibular rehab. I would also suggest you try and find a chiropractor who is well versed in the upper cervical spine, as sometimes that may be the missing piece of the puzzle. I wish you a full recovery and please don't give up yet...best wishes!

Question about your bppd, did your providers do the dix hallpike maneuver to diagnose. Have you tried the Lempert maneuver. There's three canals that are involved so maybe you're just not doing the right maneuver. I get vertigo often but manage it well. Blair Chiro or Nucca do excellent cervical spine xrays. I also have neck issues. My overall root cause is malocclusion combined with a tongue tie, for real. I'm feeling much better by fixing my teeth. It's a super long story and you have to find the right provider.

If i get enough sleep and stay hydrated my symptoms are better. If my neck gets tight and stiff I usually get problems. Doctors don't help so I just try to manage my symptoms and live with it and hope it doesn't get to awful. I did learn to focus on a corner of something to get my eyes from spinning and I immediately change my head position. I'd been told I have positional vertigo and or cervical.

Just about anytime I move my head it feels really heavy and I'm very unbalanced too. How long does this last? Any ideas? The residual dizziness from the epley maneuver seems to be getting worse. The only time I feel decent is when I go to sleep but even then I have to lay there for a few moments until my head calms down. And getting up in the morning is no fun either. I hate that I have to wait a few more weeks before I can see the ent but I'm hoping you can provide some information.

Hello Dr Saunders, I have commented on this video before and I wanted to make another comment or 2. I am starting to think that it might not be dizziness that I am suffering from but I'm not sure. About an hour ago before coming on here, I once again performed the epley maneuver on both sides or both ears, with no reaction either way. I also went ahead and did the half somersault maneuver and again for both sides, surprisingly no reaction either way. I'm starting think that I have something else going on but I don't know what it is. I had been doing vestibular exercises for almost 3 weeks and to be honest I got fed up with not feeling any difference after all that time so I stopped. I will be going to my regular doctor in 2 weeks and I will tell him what is going on. I still have the off balance feeling but I don't think it is dizziness of course I am not a doctor either. At this point Dr Saunders, as I mentioned before, I personally believe that I may just have to let whatever this is just run its course and see what happens and face the possibility that I might have to deal with this for some time. I know you said don't give up but I am honestly tired of fighting with this. At least you tried and maybe my doctor might have something else in mind but for now I am just going to see if it will work itself out and hopefully not become disabled with it.

Thank you for your comment...the only way to help a symptom (dizziness, sciatica, headaches, etc...) is to first determine the cause, henc this particular video. I know it can be frustrating sometimes, but until you and your doctor figure out the underlying cause of your problem you will continue to be frustrated...so I will still say, do not give up. Once you find the cause, the solution will also be available...best wishes.

I did however get rear ended about 5 years ago, my frame was bent that's how fast she was going. Because of my dizziness I fell off the last 2 steps in the basement and broke my shoulder. I'm really tired of being dizzy. I've had vestibular testing done, my right side seemed to be worse, but nothing came of that. I'm just really tired of it and yes it has been depressing me. I went to the ear doctor and had my vestibular issue diagnosed. I followed the epley exercises and the problem subsided - but it did not go away completely. Even today when someone walks towards me I feel a little off balance - like when 2 magnets are next to each other. And walking at night puts me off balance if I move my head to look right or left while walking straight.

I live in Western Australia - so I haven't been to see him, but have you heard of Dr Ross Hauser at Caring Medical (in Florida) and his opinions on cervical instability and the treatment usage of Prolotherapy injections? I've had them done twice here - and will probably have more done, because gentle chiro hasn't helped any and I've developed tremors, loss of fine & gross motor skills, ataxia, mdds, neck/arm/leg tingling, numbness & weakness, issues with bowel control, balance, coordination, proprioception, spatial awareness/depth perception & I've had 2 drop attacks when I've put my head back. I have MDDS 24/7 now - even when I'm lying down. Have you ever successfully treated anybody with MDDS? I feel like I'm living in a nightmare that I can't wake up from. It was actually a clairvoyant that I went to that said to me: "something is pressing on the nerves". Because of course I've been to doctors & had a brain MRI done - but no Parkinson’s or MS or anything like that showed up. But I do have degeneration of the spine and CT scans showed 2 places where I have spinal stenosis = cervical & lumbar. I saw a neurosurgeon & he just dismissed it saying: "some things you have to learn to live with". I'd like to see HIM try to live with what I have! I used to be extremely active, exercising for at least an hour a day. Now I'm bedridden - and my partner/carer just died unexpectedly in December too - he was only 30 years old. I feel like I'm drowning 😞

So, same question I have asked my doctor and therapist, what is the root cause? Can't get a clear answer.

The point of this video is help you understand there are many potential causes that need to be discussed with your health care provider. Best wishes.

I've seen a balance physio. He did the Hall-Pike and I had nystagmus on the left. And he did the Horizontal Roll test and I had nystagmus on my right. I have 56% hearing in my right ear and some negative pressure and terrible tinnitus. BPPV fits when I'm bending down and looking up. But the rest of the time I have constant vertigo that never goes away and I can't balance.
I'm 41 and I have to use a walking stick to go out and I rely on the walls and furniture at home to get around.
Finally a GP is taking this seriously and not just putting it down to Covid.
I also have Narcolepsy and Fibromyalgia. I can't see properly most of the time and half the time i have to close one eye and squint to be able to read -- like right now.
The GP tried Betahistine but it made it a lot worse so I was told to stop it. He also put me on Escitalopram and I'm on Ritalin for my Narcolepsy and Pregabalin for my Fibromyalgia pain. Plus I'm on Betavit.
None of it is really helping. Neither is the Epley Manoeuvre.
The right side of my head feels kinda heavy and full.
I am fatigued and when my balance is bad I can't think or function properly as I'm so focused on balancing I can't focus on anything else.
I can't work. And it's hard to be a good Mum to my 16yo son.
I had an MRI and it was clear.
I can't find any condition that gives constant vertigo. Even Meniere's veritgo is periodic and mine is not. It's persistent.
The physio says an ENT wouldn't do anything much he wasn't doing but I think there's something else going on apart from BPPV because the vertigo with that is widely reported to last up to about 90 seconds - but it's almost been 9 months of it.
    - My BP and blood sugar is ok.
    - I don't drink caffeine.
    - I had the vertigo before I started the Pregabalin so it's not that.
    - I've been on Ritalin for 12 years so it's not that.
    - I'm definitely stressed and anxious.
    - I get fatigued when it's bad because I can't sleep.
    - I don't get light headed much.
    - I vear off to right when walking but everything spins to the left.
    - I am very sensitive to light. I keep my curtains closed all the time and have to wear sunglasses outside because the light bothers me.
    - My iron level is ok.
    - I'm not pregnant.
    - Blood tests are ok.
    - Don't have allergies or sinus.
    - I get quite a lot of headaches.
    - I'm sensitive to loud noises in my right ear.
    - I have a fast heartrate resting of about 120bpm.
    - I had Myocarditis in 2021 and it wasn't due to the vax.
Thank you for your reply on another of your videos. It helps to know someone is hearing me! And your videos have given me some points to raise with my new GP on Tuesday.
    Thank you
    Lex
