Why You Should Read for Pleasure

  • Reading helped me transform my life. Here’s how, and here’s why you should do it too.
In this video I go over a few different reasons why you should make time to read a book (for pleasure) every day. It doesn’t take long - just 5 minutes a day will add up. There are several benefits for reading, I touch on just a couple of them, including academic success, learning from great minds in the world, and serving as a keystone habit to propel you forward with other positive life changes.

I actually set a goal this year to read one book every month to help improve my skills before the MCAT next year. In January, I read The Dry by Jane Harper, and for this month it'll be When Breath Becomes Air :) I plan on reading all of the books you suggested in the description as well.

This is a fantastic article! I do think you might still be missing out, though, if you only read Nonfiction. Don't get me wrong; I think you're right, and the last thing I would want to do is turn anyone off just READING.
Fiction, though, adds a host of benefits, even on top of the ones you've listed in your video. Fiction improves your emotional intelligence and general empathy skills, as you're forced to see things from the perspective of imaginary characters in hypothetical situations, and ask yourself "What would I do?"
Plus, it's fun. If you enjoy watching TV series or movies, you might even find you enjoy the books those shows are based on, even more than the shows themselves. I know I almost always enjoy the book more. The book has depth that, for various logistical reasons, the screenwriters and producers just couldn't fit into the screen production.
You also get the benefit of imagining in your own mind what your favourite characters and settings look and sound like, as opposed to relying on the cinematographers' vision.
You mention you've got a Kindle Paperwhite. That's awesome, because I've written a fair bit of fiction, and it's all available in the Kindle Store. Look me up. ;)

First, thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into this channel - it's a great help!
I'd like to criticize your first argument though: You (seemingly) concluded from a correlation in a study that starting to read would help improve, which implies a proven causation instead of a correlation. It could be another underlying cause that created the correlation - then starting to read itself wouldn't help at all.
This argument stuck in my head throughout your other arguments and almost defied the purpose of this video for me.
Also, people might catch up on seeing causation in other places where there's only correlation - please make sure to NOT be mislead!

In HS, I invested a lot of my time reading manga books and watching anime. Now as an adult in college, I find myself reading the novel versions of the manga/anime before bed. It helps me sleep better at night. It also does help with the visual/cognitive skills, because a lot of it is working an imaginative plot.

I don't think most oeople can finish a book in a month by reading 5-10 minutes every night. I'm a slow reader, about 30 pages/hour if the book is easy like a novel. that's just 150 pages per month for me. I read an hour almost everyday while on train and strugling to finish a 500 pages long fantasy novel for more than a month xD
