  • Reporter Darragh MacIntyre finds the IRA anticipating that 1972 would be their `year of victory’, only to be countered by a massive British military response in the midst of what became the bloodiest period of the conflict.
The programme features previously unseen footage and new discoveries around the secret talks between the government and the IRA about British withdrawal, including interviews with the people who were there. Were the talks a serious offer or a ruse to weaken the IRA by dragging them into protracted negotiations?
One insider’s secret diary provides a fresh insight into a missed opportunity for peace. Then, as sectarian fighting with Protestant loyalists began to increase, a coup inside the IRA sets the stage for what they called ‘the Long War’.

Watching the series for the first time, POWERFUL and heart wrenching to say the least. A credit to the Mr MacIntyre and all Spotlight production and research crews behind it, and to those who contributed to yhe series.

Fascinating documentary of a time I lived through, but never fully understood. My eyes are only truly opening now.

Totally agree with you man - there's so much content here, stuff I've never heard about and it's all presented with top-shelf production values. Definitely a quality series 👍🍻

53:03 the best fucking line till now.
    - What the fuck was it all about.-
Exactly I reached the second part of this documentary and this was my question running through my head. We are now in the mid 1970's and more than 2000 people died and nothing changed. Why the fuck why.

Shame man. Thoughts for the lost lives on both sides. As the IRA man said: "waste of time and waste of life."
Unnecessary and wanton violence. I wish only peace for the survivors.

So the BA not only refused to ensure government promise of housing was supported they actively fought it and prevented its implementation. How utterly stupid.

I would like to see some serious economic investment in both communities of Northern Ireland to give the peace process a chance.Problem being any investors are made nervous by the threat of extortion by paramilitary organisations I would be very cautious.Therein is the root instigator of conflict poverty injustice social discrimination or discontent. There are no fast solutions to the problems of the province even if the nationalists succeeded in all out civil war resulting in a United ireland same problem economic deprivation. The former ira volunteer asked what was it all about it was a waste of time and life. It’s been a dirty war awful atrocities committed by both sides both communities have deep rooted traditions I believe if both communities had jobs a decent life peace may stand a better chance.

This series now comes with a youtube warning. "Offensive and inappropriate to some viewers." Otherwise known as the truth of the matter. 50 years of propaganda is hard to shake.

I'm kind of glad I'm old enough to be dead in 50 years.
With we are learning about ALL of our governments, man... I don't know know WHAT we will be listening to then.
Covid stories, Ukrainian cover ups, the freaking elections... With all the secret stuff that has eventually come to surface, like the pentagon papers, swift boat, the BS WMD stories...
      50 years from now? I don't know.

He's not lying. By mid 74 British Intelligence had the IRA on the ropes. Infiltration, Arrests, Trials etc. were crippling their ability to fight.

Ireland needed the same support back in 1600 ,as the Ukrainians are getting in 2022, but sadly never happened.
    Ireland did suffer.
