  • The Canadian Victoria Cross has never been awarded in its 31 years of existence. Gen. Rick Hillier aims to change that, and he joins Brian Lilley to discuss the new Heroes Among Us project launching with Postmedia - along with his worries about the general state of our military, and our nation. Hillier lays out in stark detail how Canada’s stature on the world stage has sunk from its former greatness, why we’re a “parasite on defence,” why the army is “essentially broken” and why Ottawa’s new defence policy doesn’t reassure him in the least. He also talks about why he thinks Canada is being divided by leaders whose job it should be to unite us. (Recorded April 12, 2024.)

Thats crazy. Only racist notions of canada are dying. The economy itself right new is better than its been in decades. Here in the maritimes the economy has NEVER been better as part of canada.
OUR issues are not 'canada' it is our conservative provincial government which jacked up our property taxes with no more services, forcefully amalgamated us against our wishes DURING a pandemic, refused to enact rent control during covid when rents were increasing BEFORE immigration kicked in, has brought in numerous regulations for rural residents, and we're his BASE.

It breaks my heart that our soldiers both living and dead are completly forgotten. They don’t even want to talk about these young men. Their graves in Canada are not looked after . Headstones broken graves covered in weeds. No one visits them. I had 8 uncles serve ,my dad as well a navy veteran. One is buried on the old western front. The ones who died in Belgium and France are treated with dignity and respect by not those who survived returned home and are buried in unmarked graves ,forgotten across Canada.

They were impressed and touched by how well kept it was. There are groups of school children who help tend the graves with the utmost respect and caring. What Canadians don't realize is that our history and our culture has been slowly erased over time. Now we have little to pull us together with a common sense of who we are as a country. This is very unusual. We all know how history, culture and the constitution unifies Americans. We don't know how most/all other countries are similar to the America, NOT Canada. Go to Mexico on their independence day and you will see 110 million Mexicans from all ages celebrating their unique history and culture. Ditto for other Latin American or European countries. Canada stands alone as a country that ignores our proud history and disconnects from our culture. We are so lost and we didn't know how foolish we look on the international stage until Trudeau showed up... now it's obvious😢.

After having left the Regular Forces for a job on Civvy Street, I decided to re-join as a reservist. It was just shy of one year (11 months) until I was sworn in once again. I thought it was ridiculously long, but I found out that was about average. Just one of the many reasons why they are having problems reaching recruiting goals. I had an honourable discharge from the Regular Forces, no criminal record, no medical issues, no educational deficiencies…it should have been a rubber stamp re-enrolment. I can see recruits, especially young people losing interest in that amount of time and moving on with their lives.

Thank you for coming forward with this initiative and expressing your views of which I agree completely. I am willing to help in any way I can. Please let me know what I can do to help. Those of us that believe in Canada, our history, and our future need to come forward and speak up or our grandchildren will not inherit the Canada that those of my age were so very lucky to grow up in.

My friend landed with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, ended up a POW. He died in 1993. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to spend time with him in the 80's. They made them tough back in the day.

I retired from the CF in 2000. Never had the opportunity to serve under the General. After seeing his performance during the Afghan War and as CDS, I wish I had had that opportunity and so wish that he would run for the CPC. He'd make a great MND and get the military back in shape real quick! It would also be great if Admiral Norman ran for office as well. We can only hope, it's basically all we've got left now.

Thank you Sir. These stories returned my pride of having worn this countries uniform along side my husband, great grand father, several great uncles and uncles, brother in law, and father in law. I’m afraid I had sunk into the abyss, that is disappointment, thank you for bringing back the tears of pride as the first woman in my family to wear this countries uniform; all of us were Army.

I am proud to have served in the Artillery Reserve during the 1960's. I am still part of a gun crew 10th Field Bty. My Aunt Maud was a Sifton and I am proud to know I am related to a Victoria Cross recipient. Both my parents and my grandfather served during WW2. On my mothers side I am proud that I am related to a Vimy survivor. As I prepare for WW3 I am ashamed of our polititicians for destroying our country. We can't defend ourselves but you can bet on it that those same wasteful, unappreciative, unaccountable liers have a bunker and supplies set aside for themselves. They don't care about the citizens or any of our history. I salute you General Hillier. Ubique.

Thank you Gen Hillier and all our troops, members and support people who don’t get the recognition or acknowledgment that they deserve. Many have given far more than they signed up for but they did not hesitate when asked to do what needed to be done. Our government should be ashamed for not supporting those people but I’m afraid our government isn’t capable of being ashamed. As a Canadian,I am ashamed for that.

    Rick Hillier I'd vote for!
I've never served in the Forces and I know Vets say only hire people who want to serve but I would like to start using drafting 18-28 yr olds. Give them oportunity to fill 1 of many different types of jobs like army engineer, signals, etc. We need to make and man northern bases and use drones and we need people to fix and operate them.Isn't that the future of warfare? We need to make our own weapons and gear. When Canadians are employed making gear and training pilots here it keeps the money here. The Government seems to only listen to the young living in the Urban areas. Young men from the middleast who comes to Canada and are cloistered in that diaspera in Toronto need to learn English and become a true Canadian and that's what the Forces would do. If they don't want to serve send them packing. All young people need to realize as JFK said, " it's not what Canada can do for you it's what you can do for Canada."
Sorry about the rant I've probably had too much caffiene🤣

One thing that wasn't taught in school was a lot about our military history. I was lucky in many ways, because I always had a strong desire to know more about Canadian history and especially Canadian military history. I was a voracious reader and I read about Chaplain Foote and Sam Steele and Smokey Smith and many others. I have not stopped reading and actually expanded my knowledge to include British and American military history along with Anzac, Indian, and again, many others. I have become disgusted with our government and their lack of moral fortitude to maintain our military.

Absolutely , the MCpl should have received the CVC. I don't think any soldier in Canada would disagree. Historically, medals are awarded to recognize acts or actions that go above and beyond. Civilians (for the most part ) see a piece of metal and cloth. I see pride. I see recognition of something special that should be held up and spoken about and remembered. I see my Country, saying Thank You. When I was in Battle School, we had some Unit history, but we could of had so much more. Its called Esprit Decor.
