- The Canadian Victoria Cross has never been awarded in its 31 years of existence. Gen. Rick Hillier aims to change that, and he joins Brian Lilley to discuss the new Heroes Among Us project launching with Postmedia - along with his worries about the general state of our military, and our nation. Hillier lays out in stark detail how Canada’s stature on the world stage has sunk from its former greatness, why we’re a “parasite on defence,” why the army is “essentially broken” and why Ottawa’s new defence policy doesn’t reassure him in the least. He also talks about why he thinks Canada is being divided by leaders whose job it should be to unite us. (Recorded April 12, 2024.)
Why not divert money going to house illegals to vets who actually paid dues to Canada and canadian citizens..?
🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
Because Canadians no longer run Canada.

Spot on!!
Illegals live in luxury hotels, veterans ask for too much so they get a tent on the street.
Agreed! Canada is dying by a Thousand Cuts inflicted by Trudeau NDP Liberal government! Resist and vote Conservative federally and provincially!!!
Time for Canadian taxpayers to MAKE SOME CUTS !
Thats crazy. Only racist notions of canada are dying. The economy itself right new is better than its been in decades. Here in the maritimes the economy has NEVER been better as part of canada.
OUR issues are not 'canada' it is our conservative provincial government which jacked up our property taxes with no more services, forcefully amalgamated us against our wishes DURING a pandemic, refused to enact rent control during covid when rents were increasing BEFORE immigration kicked in, has brought in numerous regulations for rural residents, and we're his BASE.
@mikearchibald744 What magic bubble do you live in. Record number of people going to food banks, tent cities in most cities and recording breaking bankruptcy across the country. The economy is in the toilet.
Provincial voting in Ontario hasn't helped much as the Ford Government is Liberal Lite.
@@jeffspicolli593 I think you are just being partisan while calling anything he does that you don't like 'liberal'. The dude is corrupt, and for corruption charges one party stands out more than any other in canadian history.
Canadians have become errelivent to this Government
this government?... look at history- do more research.
Not just the government. Harper didn't care either.
@@robchristian8602 Harper was also a WEF Global Young Leader. Once you look into this stuff, all the dots connect.
It breaks my heart that our soldiers both living and dead are completly forgotten. They don’t even want to talk about these young men. Their graves in Canada are not looked after . Headstones broken graves covered in weeds. No one visits them. I had 8 uncles serve ,my dad as well a navy veteran. One is buried on the old western front. The ones who died in Belgium and France are treated with dignity and respect by not those who survived returned home and are buried in unmarked graves ,forgotten across Canada.
If Canada is in the state it's in now what did they fight for?
My uncle is buried in Holten War cemetery. Some family members were vacationing in Europe and made the trip to the Netherlands to visit his grave. They were impressed and touched by how well kept it was. There are groups of school children who help tend the graves with the utmost respect and caring. The stories of how the Canadian soldiers came to save them have been handed down from generation to generation. This is the sort of thing lacking in how we do things in Canada.
Canada doesn't have enough education on the Canadian involvement in wars. Canada has had some great heroes who are now forgotten. When trudeau banned Prayer on Memorial Day, was disgusting, degrading and showed dishonor towards our Vets and War Heroes. We do need more education in our Canadian system. We need to honor these people, not dishonor them.
Canada doesn’t have an education system. Just a bunch of backward government goofs called teachers.
@@deblynn355 My uncle is buried in England, my niece went to the Brookwood cemetery and took pictures there and what a beautiful well kept resting place. Canadians have no pride.!
When I was nursing at a nursing home that had several vets who fought in the wars, I looked upon my job as the greatest honour and a privilege.
Bless you! I felt the same!❤
Lovely words to hear. ❤️
Thank you sister
❤❤❤❤❤❤
What wars have we fought in that were a legit war where our country was under an imminent threat ?! We have assisted to the United States in the brutal massacres and forever wars in the Middle East. Ignorant people like you, are the problem in our society. We need to stay the hell out of every country and worry about Canada only. this POS war monger should never be given any platform to spew his propaganda.
I always have time to listen General Hillier. A great man and a great Canadian.
Until he came to Ontario and PUSHED the JAB on everyone. Lost all respect for him.
Yup. He could be critiqued for that and so can Ford.
@@liensixx2812As soon as you referred to the vaccine as "The Jab" you lost all credibility.
That is an understatement. I too have all the time in the world for this man, especially after meeting him.
@@tbnone2501 What planet have you been on for the last 4 years. Everyone calls it the jab, the vaxx, even the clot shot. I don't understand why you would think someone should lose credibility just for calling it the jab. Unless you still think it's safe and effective and Trudeau was up front and honest about it.
Harper wasn't perfect, but at least he was respected by our allies.
He was a staunch friend of Israel as well!
Harper was a saint compared to the dirty stain there now.

Indeed....under Trudeau we are being sold to China and Wef.
No rational reason to sell your country to Dictators.....only Blind Fascist ambition, eh Trudeau. Admit your lack of Canadianness, and move on!!!
@@rce8540 on what planet? just look up the omni bus bill- it has a life of its own...Canada is still working it through like a gazelle through a python. religion and politics should not mix...we do not need a god party- religion does not own values and family values has changed- its not just a man and a women. we have moved beyond this paradigm. in regards to military the party does not seen to matter. the religious right party is about cut cut cut- sometimes the military is part of that. harper cut cut .
its not just a liberal problem! conservatives are part of the problem!
General Hillier is one of those great Canadians that it's actually mind boggling that someone of such caliber could exist in such a time as ours.
Our Vets have always been undervalued. This is shameful.
"You're asking for more than we can give." Trudy's answer to vets.
We will greatly regret forgetting our history. Some of us already do
What Canadians don't realize is that our history and our culture has been slowly erased over time. Now we have little to pull us together with a common sense of who we are as a country. This is very unusual. We all know how history, culture and the constitution unifies Americans. We don't know how most/all other countries are similar to the America, NOT Canada. Go to Mexico on their independence day and you will see 110 million Mexicans from all ages celebrating their unique history and culture. Ditto for other Latin American or European countries. Canada stands alone as a country that ignores our proud history and disconnects from our culture. We are so lost and we didn't know how foolish we look on the international stage until Trudeau showed up... now it's obvious😢.
Canada is being dismantled by intention.
Agreed. Canada thought Diversity is a strength but instead destroyed their own culture.
Russia is, also, a country that celebrates their history and their people's. This kind of country is hard to beat.
I do appreciate your sadness and frankness. We can build back together, if we are willing to help each other. This is not a naive statement. Just a hopeful one. I'm/we're willing, if you are.
Well, here in Calgary, our illustrious mayor CANCELED CANADA DAY FIREWORKS last year - informing we, the citizens, that the FIREWORKS WERE RACIST!!!! Oh, yes, this is the truth. She attempted to cover her ass by blaming FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE (many asked that THEY not be blamed and never asked for the cancelation). She then tried to invoke THE HEAD TAX assessed to Chinese immigrants more than 100 years ago. The citizens got involved, and the fireworks were reinstated - AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED BY ALL!!!
We cannot get a politician to even acknowledge our letters
General Hillier is a man to be respected and listened to.
That is exactly what we need more distinguished people that love our Country and speak out about the WEF destruction of Canada
General Hillier is spot on.
I can still remember him in Gagetown NB
Vets need to be honored.
Since 2015, I no longer recognize the country I served for 22 years.
I thank you for your service to Canada.
Thank you for your service.
Reject Christ in favour of the pagan secular eastern Antichrist tribalism racism religions this is what you get.
My dad would be fully ashamed of the Forces now. He was a British Commando during the Second World War and immigrated to Canada to join the RCN. He retired and joined the Civil Service. He was a devote legion member and supported the troops by speaking at the schools in Renfrew. I have a son-in-law in the military and he is proud to serve. I work for the military and see what is happening. Years ago it would have been a disgrace what the present government is doing now. We can only hope that the next government will reverse what has been done and support the troops.
NOT hope...INSIST !
Do you have any idea why the government just gave the military police authority?
Canada does not make their own tanks, armoured personnel carrier, their fighter jets, their own plane carriers, ice breaker for the artic, their artillery howitzer, their cannons....further more in time of need for spare parts , for these equipment ,.. the country of origin will and have set their own priority to supply or not supply Canada
We are loosers . I'm so ashamed
In regards to recruiting....the population has lost confidence, thrust, and respect for the government....so...the young guys don't want nothing to do with the military. COVID 19 is another fine exemple of failed government not taking positive action to solve a problem.
I remember when we had.rifles[ F NC1A1] that were older then the guys using them
I couldn't agree with General Hillier more. He is absolutely spot on!
The good general would be a far sight better than Harjit Sajjan who is nothing more than a pension aqumaltor with pensions now with, VPD pension, Armed Services pension, Canada pension and the grand daddy pension, cabinet minister, pure gold plated. Paid for a lifetime of being a grifter.
And lied about fighting in battle. Disgusting foreigner making gov't policy.
So very, very proud to be a Newfie listening to Rick. One of many gems out of Newfoundland.
A great, candid, hopeful & motivating interview by Brian Lilley with General Rick Hillier who is truly one of our most patriotic Canadians in this day and age.
After having left the Regular Forces for a job on Civvy Street, I decided to re-join as a reservist. It was just shy of one year (11 months) until I was sworn in once again. I thought it was ridiculously long, but I found out that was about average. Just one of the many reasons why they are having problems reaching recruiting goals. I had an honourable discharge from the Regular Forces, no criminal record, no medical issues, no educational deficiencies…it should have been a rubber stamp re-enrolment. I can see recruits, especially young people losing interest in that amount of time and moving on with their lives.
In the early Eighties, many of us, were forced to resign from our Reserve unit, by Regular Force administrators, because our regular jobs interfered with our ability to participate in monthly training exercises.
Our Unit lost many veteran, trained personnel. Other members left, because the TEAM we had become, was no more. The death of our Canadian military, has been a long, and painful one.
I wish you luck, General Hillier, in your campaign to restore, what once was, a PROUD military.
Selflessness always deserves a medal. Canada almost nevers recognises our heroes! God bless!
I feel the same way you do Mr.Hillier .
God bless you General, you are a great Canadian!
I’d LOVE to see Gen. Hillier in a future Conservative Cabinet.
REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO GENERAL HILLIER AND HE DEFINITELY HAS SAID SO MANY TRUTHS ABOUT THE DISGRACE THAT OUR PMO HAS DONE TO CANADA!
Love to see this guy as Minister of Defence!
It was a woman a short time ago as she was so useless they moved her to another position . Correct me if I am wrong .
Thank you Sir, I stand with all you said!!! It is our duty as Canadians to stand
Gen Hillier was CDS during my time. Managed to snag a couple of challenge coins from him. Loved his leadership and the troops had his back...because he had ours. Glad he is speaking out again.
Until he came to Ontario and PUSHED the JAB on everyone. Lost all respect for him.

We belonged to a church for over 10 years. The newer pastor wouldn’t honour veterans when Remembrance Day fell on a Sunday In 2019. My husband served and was retired at the time. I told the pastor off, then I told an elder off before Remembrance Day so they could have a chance to change their damn minds. Disgusted, We never went back. The pastor’s dad, also a pastor, was new to Canada. Many New Canadians don’t have a connection to our military contribution, history. But they sure do love our schools and social programs.
The future generations are going to have a tough time with all the damage that has been done. They don't teach about these hero's because they are afraid of offending someone.
Yes, and it is harder to repeat historical ideologies, when people have been educated about them.
they dont teach about them because in their school of thought they are evil militants of colonialism and racism. They aren't afraid of offending people they are doing it to offend and break the spirit and will of our culture. Make no mistake this is intentional subversion and sabotage of Western Civilization by post modern acedemics and far left elites who intend to rebuild the world in their image, or are just psychopaths seizing the opportunity to burn everything down.
We had a long, rambunctious "enough is enough" already in Canada, unfortunately when we do that the EA is called and bank accounts are frozen. I am glad to see other Canadians finally waking up as they realize they don't like the Canada they see anymore.
Thank you for your service! We need more people that are willing to step up for this country.
Thanks, Brian! The younger Canadians may not know of the amazing and courageous deeds of these unsung heroes
What a difference in the USA! My veteran cousin and I visited the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He had an "I served in the Gulf War" ball cap on . Every single American we met thanked him for his service! We were both astounded.
As a former member of #1 Field Ambulance based in Calgary, SIR, you have my utmost and everlasting respect. You are a hero and everyone welcomes your input / support / promotion of more effective national policies for our troops. Your leadership has clearly demonstrated the importance of supporting and respecting our troops and their families. Please keep up the good fight sir. God bless you and your family.
Great interview,real Canadian.
We should honour our real heroes.Would be something if CBC actually used our money to promote our heroes instead of propping up government and the woke movement!
I wish we could take 4 years to cut international funding, government etc and really build up a proper military/navy, Air Force. Its so sad to become not even looked down on, but to be thought to be irrelevant.
Was coming up on the end of my career when Gen. Hillier was CDS but I still had the honour to serve with him for a shorts while. Some of the very best times!
Thank you Mr Hillier,i Agree Wholeheartdly and finally Someone who SEES the Problems that Go unsolved
Enough is enough. Is right! Way to speak out General Hilliier! Thank you for your service to Canada. Not something I will ever say to a Liberal under Trudeau.
General I would vote for you sir.
So very heartbreaking. We need people like you to be leaders. Respect. Family values .
General Hillier, please write a book on these heroes, I’d buy it for myself and my family. Perhaps part of the proceeds could go to help those veterans who are still suffering today. God Bless You and your colleagues in this project.

Thanks Rick, I served with 3Ppcli and as an electrician in the Navy in Esquimalt.
There are many Canadian stories from our troups, young and old that are disappearing. I have been trying to collect info about my Dad and his two brothers that served in WWII. One was killed at Falaise, France. I'd like to go to Ottawa if I ever can afford it. I'm not good with online research as I have tried to make contact with our war museum but I get no response. Like I said, its probably me. Bravo General Hillier on what you are trying to accomplish :)
RESPECT General Hillier. CHIMO~!!
Ubique!
Trudeau and his ilk could give a crap about our brave and honourable service men and women . My father who fought so bravely in WW11 would be so disgusted with this Govt . sad sad sad
This is in my opinion one of the best videos and testimony I have ever heard from someone that didn't need to put himself in this position. All respect and thanks to you for your indever and I for one and knowing I'd have full acceptance of such pray and give you blessing. Gods good and he's on your side. Message coming from Ontario Canada.
Please give the first Canadian purple cross to the RCMP officer that arrests Trudeau and hauls him out of parliament in handcuffs. He would get my vote!
Thank you for coming forward with this initiative and expressing your views of which I agree completely. I am willing to help in any way I can. Please let me know what I can do to help. Those of us that believe in Canada, our history, and our future need to come forward and speak up or our grandchildren will not inherit the Canada that those of my age were so very lucky to grow up in.
Good for you. Proud!
Love our country and this discussion.
I would so look forward to seeing/hearing more about our military history and those who so bravely served Canada. My father was a POW in WWII taken at Dieppe. It was something he didn't talk about easily.
My friend landed with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, ended up a POW. He died in 1993. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to spend time with him in the 80's. They made them tough back in the day.
Don't just look here on CZcams, go the library and READ. If they don't have the books you want, ask them to order them. And tell others about what you learn and how you did it.
The Sun is an important news outlet. I'm 18 and I would have never heard of this soldiers story or meet this General Hillier. An honourable man.
I retired from the CF in 2000. Never had the opportunity to serve under the General. After seeing his performance during the Afghan War and as CDS, I wish I had had that opportunity and so wish that he would run for the CPC. He'd make a great MND and get the military back in shape real quick! It would also be great if Admiral Norman ran for office as well. We can only hope, it's basically all we've got left now.
Thank you Sir. These stories returned my pride of having worn this countries uniform along side my husband, great grand father, several great uncles and uncles, brother in law, and father in law. I’m afraid I had sunk into the abyss, that is disappointment, thank you for bringing back the tears of pride as the first woman in my family to wear this countries uniform; all of us were Army.
Our military especially veterans have been taken for granted when they used to be revered. Good interview Brian thank-you, especially with General Hillier, always a good spokesman on behalf of those in uniform. Lest we forget
As a vet myself, Canada does a disservice to Canadians who are deserving of this medal. This is atrocious in my opinion. These Heroes are what our country is made of. This is embarrassing. Good for General Hillier for pushing this. !!! Pro Patria!!!!
One of the best interviews about the current state of the country. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Rt. General Rick Hillier.
This interview should be required viewing for all Canadians. Thank you Gen. Hillier for your service to this once great country, and for speaking out on the seemingly intentional destruction of our standing on the international stage. I would love not to be embarrassed by my government any further.
I am proud to have served in the Artillery Reserve during the 1960's. I am still part of a gun crew 10th Field Bty. My Aunt Maud was a Sifton and I am proud to know I am related to a Victoria Cross recipient. Both my parents and my grandfather served during WW2. On my mothers side I am proud that I am related to a Vimy survivor. As I prepare for WW3 I am ashamed of our polititicians for destroying our country. We can't defend ourselves but you can bet on it that those same wasteful, unappreciative, unaccountable liers have a bunker and supplies set aside for themselves. They don't care about the citizens or any of our history. I salute you General Hillier. Ubique.
I loved this interview .
Thank you Gen Hillier and all our troops, members and support people who don’t get the recognition or acknowledgment that they deserve. Many have given far more than they signed up for but they did not hesitate when asked to do what needed to be done. Our government should be ashamed for not supporting those people but I’m afraid our government isn’t capable of being ashamed. As a Canadian,I am ashamed for that.
Thanks Brian and General Hillier, great show 👍
Rick Hillier I'd vote for!
I've never served in the Forces and I know Vets say only hire people who want to serve but I would like to start using drafting 18-28 yr olds. Give them oportunity to fill 1 of many different types of jobs like army engineer, signals, etc. We need to make and man northern bases and use drones and we need people to fix and operate them.Isn't that the future of warfare? We need to make our own weapons and gear. When Canadians are employed making gear and training pilots here it keeps the money here. The Government seems to only listen to the young living in the Urban areas. Young men from the middleast who comes to Canada and are cloistered in that diaspera in Toronto need to learn English and become a true Canadian and that's what the Forces would do. If they don't want to serve send them packing. All young people need to realize as JFK said, " it's not what Canada can do for you it's what you can do for Canada."
Sorry about the rant I've probably had too much caffiene🤣
It was inspiring!!!😊❤
I agree, conscription needs to be brought back in to give structure to their lives, as well as a sense of service to your country. A recent report on happiness identified those who in the identified countries were the happiness had one common theme: mandatory military service.
We didn’t even get sanctioned medals for all ranks and personnel 😮 Canada made these medals 🥇 only given to a cliché group. It’s pathetic refusing to recognize their own troops 😢
We couldn't fight our way out of a paper bag right now.
You get rusty ships, lead poisoning from the water but oh boy did I get "manpons" in record time. FML
How heartbreaking is that, after hearing the heroic stories of thise wonderful men, heros, that they are now concidered irrelevant 😢😢😢
One thing that wasn't taught in school was a lot about our military history. I was lucky in many ways, because I always had a strong desire to know more about Canadian history and especially Canadian military history. I was a voracious reader and I read about Chaplain Foote and Sam Steele and Smokey Smith and many others. I have not stopped reading and actually expanded my knowledge to include British and American military history along with Anzac, Indian, and again, many others. I have become disgusted with our government and their lack of moral fortitude to maintain our military.
Wonderful interview with two superb Canadians. Thank you. Let's go General!
Fantastic stories of strength of character and fearlessness. In my 70 years, I have never heard or read anything like this. My father was in the Canadian Army during the liberation of the Netherlands. He never spoke of it. We need to hear more about these heroic men and women.
Thanks for inviting this great Canadian.
Thanks for your service sir. Mr hillier.

Thank you so much for this wonderful interview! Hearing the pride in both your voices is very uplifting. We need to bring our country back into balance both nationally and internationally. God keep our land glorious and free, O Canada we stand on guard for thee!!
This is a voice Canadian's should hear more from.
Let's get Gen Hillier on the Sean Ryan podcast. Let him tell the Canadian stiry to a massive audience.
General Hillier is great.
We all need to hear these stories and honor them all!!! Thank you General for waking us up!! 🙏
Although I’m an Air Force guy, I fully understand the importance of the Army. You can’t take, nor occupy, ground with the Air Force. We have to work together for the common aim.
Bravo General!
General Rick Hillier is a very impressive Canadian and we must listen to what he has been saying. Our Military is under equipped and under staffed. Canada has lots of problems now. We must solve those problems.
This would make a fantastic documentary series, highlighting these incredible soldiers performing heroic acts of courage to defend democracy. A truly Canadian content documentary. Make it a part of the school curriculum on history.
Canada needs a true leader, and this man definitely fits the bill
This should educate people as what these great Canadians did for the freedoms we have today. These stories are very neccesary
God Bless You General.
"Let's fire some people" best line ever.
Canadians have stopped talking and listening to each other .
We live in a very large diverse challenging and beautiful land.
I believe talking and listening with respect for one another is the back bone of Confederation of the people and the land that is Canada .
Canada’s next Minister of Defence.
Smart, Bold, and Correct. Trudeau must be having major shrinkage.
Absolutely , the MCpl should have received the CVC. I don't think any soldier in Canada would disagree. Historically, medals are awarded to recognize acts or actions that go above and beyond. Civilians (for the most part ) see a piece of metal and cloth. I see pride. I see recognition of something special that should be held up and spoken about and remembered. I see my Country, saying Thank You. When I was in Battle School, we had some Unit history, but we could of had so much more. Its called Esprit Decor.
My dad hit the beaches on Juno. No one cared about awards. They had one thing in mind. Canada continues to have a strong reputation in this world.
Many years ago he reminded me that Canada first !
Yes we do want to read about all of them. That's the least we can do for these hero's. Myself i just feel so proud of them and our country these iron men are fighting for.
