  • Reese Brothers Mule Sale - a fourth generation family business runs a highly successful and unique saddle mule sale in Tennessee. Coverage of the annual mule obstacle course competition.
Currently Dickie, Rufus and Richard run the business (grandsons and great-grand son of the original owner)
Joe interviews Cindy Haley who explains the history of this sale and the reasons it is so well respected. They have a reputation for selling quality mules and work hard at costumer satisfaction.
Each event includes an early competition to showcase mule abilities followed by the mule auction.
We watch as Bobbi Jo Chambers explains the "competition" to the mule sellers. Each mule is graded on 10 activities/obstacles for 10 points each. These include bridling, trailering, mounting, obstacles including a bear hide, rails, stumps water, as well as standing still, lifting feet and dismounting. Each competitor has an option to take a one minute free-style ride.
We watch a number of the free-style rides.
Next we see footage of the auction and an number of mules sold.
Lastly Joe talks to a tack dealer who has been coming to the sales for 40 years.

I wish I knew about you guys 20 years ago....darn it. I loved Mules but don’t know squat about them. Heck I don’t even know why I like them? I’ve heard stories that scare me but I’m sure if I spoke to people that are familiar with them, would relieve my fears. Ah geez maybe it’s not too late....I’ve got great great grand nieces and nephews. I need to subscribe to keep in touch.

The message I got from this? This company works very hard to please its customer, if they aren't happy with a mule, they can work it out.

Love that sellers can expo their mule through the course ahead of the auction. But like a ton of people, I've come to hate the atmosphere and incomprehensible prattling of auctioneers. While I think you're likely to pay a little more at online auction sites, it's totally worth it just to be able to have cogent communications with the seller, know exactly where the bid is at, and never have to hear any of that auctioneers' racket. The funniest cut I ever heard came from a potential buyer who dropped out of the bidding because he couldn't understand where the price was, and then the reining prospect sold for less than he was willing to pay. At the close of the sale on the colt he yelled: "Do you go to school to learn to jabber like an idiot, or is that from brain trauma?!" (LOL!)

that would be a great event to witness a trail ride through some wilderness, it must be a lot of work to train a mule to ride like these ones?
