The coma's haven't exactly been reversed, it's more that Alex is now in a coma within a coma.

I don't think it makes much sense to analyse Summers' plan with logic. He's playing out a psychodrama of his own guilt. I think you get there in the end. He does want to make amends and foil the crime he previously helped with. But also he is reenacting his own villainy and conspiring in his own death, paying the price that he avoided paying the first time round.
I think I remember being quite confused by the whole Summers' thing at the time. But it made more sense when I rewatched it this week.

Jackanory was a children's show which had different famous people reading stories to the audience. People such as Jon Pertwee, Bernard Cribbins and others all made the show popular. As has been true throughout both shows, cultural nostalgia plays a huge part in the series as a whole. Of course, a lot of the references go over the head of anyone not from the UK and/or are younger than the era being shown. Being a child of the '80s - as in, they were my formative years, which is what the phrase actually means - Ashes to Ashes is something of a call back to those halcyon days of youth. I'm sure the same's true for those who grew up in the Britain of the early '70s.

Maybe Summers didn't know whether he could trust Gene, or just how far the conspiracy of bent coppers reached? Or maybe he has a motive we just don't know about yet? It's interesting that some themes here parallel those in the series three finale, and you might watch this episode with slightly different eyes having seen that. In particular the question of whether Summers is good or bad, and Gene's final words to him.

Back when this season aired I was in my last year of school and hip deep in my exams. One of my friends and I would scrutinise every episode the day after we watched it but we were on study leave when the finale was broadcast. All he could say about this episode was a text message saying "Ray ate a willie!"
