  • A little more than a year ago Morgans Residency permit for Sweden was granted. We were so grateful
    and ready for our next adventure. Moving from america to sweden has been hard though, so we decided to sit down and share our experience. What is the difference between the US and Sweden and what have we learnt so far? How has it been for Morgan to be in a country as an immigrant not knowing the language? Has it been easy to adapt to the new culture? Watch this episode to find out.

    A little about us 🇺🇲🇸🇪
    Morgan is from the USA and Will is originally from Sweden. We met while working together in Germany in 2018 and have ever since tried to find a place to call home. In January of 2022 Morgan finally received a positive decision on her residency application in Sweden, so for now we know where we will call home. We look forward to share with you the challenges and differences between our cultures, and how it works when they meet in our relationship. We very much love each other, but do we love everything about where we are from? Is Sweden as good as everyone says, and is America more than all of its stereotypes?

    My boyfriend and I have been dating for over a year. We are planning on being together and starting a family in Sweden so we’re working on residency 🎉 😬
    It’s been super nice to follow your story to see the hope of being together and the reality of how difficult this process can be.
    I got to go be with him for about three months in the spring of last year. Morgan, I can relate to the frustration! I had a meltdown down after trying to shop in a grocery store and not being able to find some thing that I was looking for! Granted, I didn’t ask for help, but that day I was having a hard time wanting to socialize with people 🤷‍♀️
    My boyfriend is so patient and kind, the next time I go out there, one thing that is on our to-do list is just to walk around stores together so I can get my bearings and know what items are there!
    Thanks for the honesty!! ❤

      Hey Macey! How exciting - how far in the process are you?? It is hard, but we also know that our situation may be different to others. However, we want to help inspire anyone we can. Send us a message if you want to talk more and have a great time next time you're in Sweden! :)

    My family is from Sweden and my father got tired of the weather, so we left and moved to Brazil to get enough sun. We then moved to the U.S.-California. It is an individual choice to find a place you are happy.👍❤️😄

      Oh Anita, how we can relate! It’s so important though as you say to respect and understand that we are alll so so different in what we want/expect from the place we live in 🌱 stay safe and have a great rest of your day!

    I can certainly relate to those small things. I had a pair of summer jobs in London in the mid-90s (back when the UK was still in the EU) and I'm really happy I never had to call in sick, I barely know the correct way to do it here in Sweden. And it was essentially impossible to get my salary while I was in the UK, because you need a permanent residency in the UK to be able to cash a check or access a British bank account.
    I might already have mentioned it, but native English speaker that learn to speak Swedish are some of the most impressive people I know of. The level of stubbornness it takes must be huge! There is a HR lady at my job that has really done it, I didn't even notice her American accent before she told me that she was from the US. But then again, she moved here in -95 so she's had some time to practice! You're following Stefan Thyrons Swedish challenge I assume?
    Oh, and that driving thing, it hit us too! But not here! Our nanny that came with us to Montréal in 1979 had a minor accident. Which meant that the police learned that she and mom had been driving for more than three months without getting a Canadian drivers license. So fines and back to driving school! I don't know if things are still the same in Canada or not, but that was kind of a bummer! Hope you didn't learn the hard way!

    Getting an outside teacher to help with learning a new language might be best. Sometimes we assume that persons that are native speakers would be great teachers, but I would be horrible at teaching someone English 😂.
    I feel you though, I’m from Arizona The sunniest state in the US. I would die without the sun

    • @MorganandWill
      @MorganandWill  Před rokem

      So true! Honestly also just think its due to my (Will) totally inability to help Morgan and teach her Swedish, she's not that interested. So I am to blame. We also feel you on the sun part, we just need the light! :)

  • @Gelis8
    @Gelis8 Před rokem +5

    I understand that you miss your homeland. And of course it becomes more difficult to get into social life and make new friends when you don't know the language.
    But if you expect to make a life for yourself here (together with Will), you will probably have to force yourself to learn the language. Not easy but necessary. But if you feel that I only want to live here for a couple of years, then there is no reason to learn the language. But then you can probably expect to be a bit isolated, especially in a slightly smaller society.

      You are right in so many ways, however its such a shame that Swedes are so forward and eager to speak english when they are abroad. But seem to lose their confidence when they are in Sweden. We will see where we end up, but as always we are super grateful for our situation and being able to be together!

    From my own experience: Once you're at a point where you decide for yourself you're only a temporary "guest", it goes more downhill - You get more annoyed by the countries differences etc., because you don't make an effort any more to adjust yourself. I can only recommend to live as if you're trying/wanting to stay - And that means learning the language, socializing and so on. Because otherwise, you'll create a much worse experience for yourself than that you could have had.
    Apart from that I think it's great to speak each others native language in a relationship, even if both speak English fluently. But that's just my preference.

    • @MorganandWill
      @MorganandWill  Před rokem +1

      That's fair enough! You are probably right, I think because we live in such a small place it has really been hard to integrate into the culture and that's definitely not something I thought about when we moved here. Thanks for your input :)

    I mean... Not that I never comment, but I have to comment here 😁. I love Sweden and listening to Morgan just makes me sad. I see her points, but I also kinda wanna do a reaction video on this video and answer all of Will's questions through my eyes of someone coming from a very "bad" country to coming to a very "good" country... I will make it after my PN comes, so I have some statistics to compare. 🤪
    Also I see now why you are stalling the answer if you are gonna visit me in the north. You may not even be in Europe... You may not live in Europe any more... 😔
    I am just sad... I am gonna miss you from here and showing us more from Europe's countries and places... 🏡✈🏔
    Anyway... till the next vid 😋😋

      We know how wonderful it is for you and your child to get to Sweden as its such a step up in so many ways, and how it will lead to a good life for the future of your family. Each situation is different though, and we decided to start in Sweden and then try the US if we didn't feel like home here. And for now it seems like a move over west feels more natural to us. Like we said on Instagram, would love to hang out, just need to be in Sweden at the same time 😂 We still have a long way to go, so don't fear us not showing Europe and traveling around. Want to make the most of it before we head to our next adventure in life! Stay safe :)

      Lebanon was a beautiful city before all the wars and conflicts. Thriving culture with wonderful art, cuisine and people.
