Milunka Savic fought in the Balkan wars and WW1, wounded nine times, and was awarded medals for valor from Serbia, France, the United Kingdom, and the Russian Empire. After WW1 she was offered citizenship and a pension from France, but chose to return to her beloved Serbia, where she survived as a cleaning woman. Some of Milunka Savics medals:
    (2) Serbian Karađorđe Star (with Swords)
    (2) French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour)
    Russian Cross of St. George
British Medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael
    Serbian Miloš Obilić medal
French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm (Milunka Savic is the sole female recipient of this award)

      Great comment, @Alan Carter.
Milunkas brother, who was ill with tuberculosis, received call-up papers for mobilisation. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian Army.
After the war she was mostly forgotten and lived in poverty. Later, when she attended the jubilee celebrations wearing her military medals, other military officers spoke with her and heard of her courageous actions. News spread, and at last, she gained recognition.
In 1972, public pressure and a newspaper article highlighting her difficult housing and financial situation led to her being given a small apartment by the Belgrade City Assembly.

@@agpv1975 not to offend, what happened was Milunka refused an invitation to a dinner from the pro-German Serbian government since a German officer would be present. As a result, she was sent to a concentration camp.

      Alan,
Forgive my sternness, but this is utterly false and highly insulting. The “pro-German” government as you call it, was named the government of National salvation, in occupied Serbia (Yugoslavia). Occupied by the German Nazis. Literally a government, with zero control which sought to save as many Serbian lives as possible.
Milunka Savic refused to be in the company of the German occupiers which had invaded Serbia in both World wars and were driven out both times, after incomparable loss of life.
FYI, Serbs were the first and largest resistance, in all of occupied Europe. They played a far greater role , for the allies, than the myth of the French Maquis.
Serbia’s brave defense and subsequent triumph in WWI, cost the country 1/3 of the total population and 60% of all males , of fighting age, were killed. In WWII, Serbia’s brave stance against Hitler, Serbia lost another 25%-30% of its population. Many killed in war but over a million killed in a genocide perpetrated by the German Nazis, and their most fanatic and vicious Nazi disciples, the Croatian Nazis.

There is a movie )Milunka Savic: Heroine of the Great War, from 2013) about her if you want to see more, or sabaton put a history chapter in their history channel.

Sabaton has a great catalogue of songs that tell the story of multiple events in war, mostly the world wars and an album specific to Sweden’s involvement in the 30 years war. Every song is creatively written and played in a tone that matches the events of the story, for example “stormtroopers” and “ghost division” which sings about the blitzkrieg of Poland are fast pace and hard hitting to match the fast pace nature of the blitzkrieg.

So, Milunka started her military service during the first Balkan war, And she fought during the Second Balkan war as well, she was wounded and that's when the army staff found out that she was a woman, they tried to get her away from the front line but she refused, she even threatened that she would turn bandit on them if they sidelined her, so they allowed her back as an NCO, she was on reserve status when the WW1 kicked off the following year, but being a woman, she was not reactivated, so she went straight to either Vojvoda (Field Marshal) Radomir Putnik or General Stepa Stepanović to get her deployment orders, the General was like no way, you should be a nurse not a soldier, go home girl, but Milunka said no, sir I will stay here at attention untill I get my deployment orders, and she had to stay for about an hour, because the General had a meeting with other top brass, in that meeting he started bitching about this crazy young woman who wants to go to the front and one of the Colonels, I think his surname was Tufegčić, was like hey if her name is Milunka Savić than recruit her right away, she is actually a Sargent and a hell of a soldier, so the old general goes back and finds Milunka still standing at attention and is like ok, you can go report to the 2. (Iron) Regiment as a Sargent, good luck.... She was wounded 9 times and she has gotten medals from Serbia, UK, France and Russia, she still is the most decorated woman in history... Also, As a member of the Serbian Army I can say that the women who serve alongside me are some of the toughest and scariest bitches in the world, and I say that with all my love... You don't want to mess with a Serbian soldier no matter what gender they are but girls tend to be crazier, our modern day Milunkas if you will

I think that the problem with the teaching of history is that it is all taught in an academic and abstract way. they leave out the human element. they may mention a famous person, but they never mentioned the common soldier whose acts help shape the outcome of the battle. I have spoken with people that have gone to war or are police officers and their stories hit differently because these events are brought to a human level.
Sabaton is good at this. They mention a lot of battles but they are not described as academic sort of way. It is written a way that conveys the reality that people are involved. they also wove in a lot of stories of individuals. As soon as a song ends, you are googling for more information about the battle and individuals involved.

Milunka Savić joined the army instead of her brother. at that time women could not be soldiers. She skillfully disguised herself as a woman until she was wounded the third time. when they bandaged her, they saw that she was female. She was wounded a total of 9 times. After the war, France offered to live and be an honorary citizen of France, she refused and remained living a modest life in Serbia. It should also be said that Milunka is the woman in the world most decorated with medals for bravery and participation in battles.

      @arnoldpalmer3995 Před rokem

No, it’s not proper. Perhaps you’d like the reason for this gross miscarriage of Justice.
The English supported Tito and backstabbed the Serbian people who lost a greater percentage of their population, fighting the Germans and their sadistic henchmen, in both world wars, than any other peoples. Disgusting betrayal and machinations by the western powers hid the unrivaled history of heroism of the Serbs and the genocide of Serbs, in WWII, not only to the world , but their descendants, for several generations.
That’s what happens when after all the brave resistance and tragedy, your country is stolen and handed over to your tormentors, to finish the job the Nazis failed to complete in 2 world wars.
I’m sure you’ve never heard of the “forgotten 500”and the greatest rescue of American soldiers behind enemy lines. Why not do a search and you’ll find real American heroes from WWII tell you the truth. Can’t link it but there’s a great news video interview, on CZcams, of some of these American WWII veterans, from around 2005: America's Veterans The Serbian People Are Heroes
