My mother taught me when microwave ovens were first sold.
Microwave the potatoes first, then grill or throw in the oven. You essentially preheat the inside of the potatoes. I used to incorporate this into my 30 minute suppers when I was Mr. Mom.

I only use charcoal. I cook several veggies wrapped in foil. The BEST I’ve made are carrots...one pound, triple wrapped, placed directly on the coals, with 3 tablespoons of butter, pepper and salt...cooked about 30 minutes. Diced taters & onions is great the same way, except you double wrap them and line the bottom with sliced onion to prevent the potatoes from scorching.

You forgot a few things. I stab the heck out of it with a fork. Smear with butter and garlic powder. The butter and garlic soaks into the potato from the fork holes. Cook on the hot side of the grill for one hour and then remove the foil if you want a crispy crust. I've had lots of people tell me, this is the most amazing baked potato ever, LOL.

I started out with Susie's method steaming my potatoes in foil. Even with the foil removal and some time on the direct heat I could never get a nicely crisped skin. Then I tried coating all of the oiled skin in salt (and pepper +/- garlic) and cooking unwrapped on indirect heat. A result I much prefer. You can pull them at 210 degrees F., but if they go a bit longer they only improve.

I reuse the foil as a grill cleaner. Scrape those grates with a bit of crumpled foil. Use tongs to avoid burns. It works well! Alternatively, let the kids craft the foil into various shapes, like crowns or dogs or stars. Several pieces can be crumpled together to make a ball heavy enough for catch, or made mostly flat for a frisbee. One little girl used the foil to make body armor, stuck an empty soda box on her head, grabbed a pool noodle (sword) and became a knight!
