    Use of color is associated with a closed floor plan, so that the color stays "contained" within a definable design space. Since MCM, American homes have been dominated by open floor plans and high pitched ceilings that are hard to meld with a strong use of color, due to the size of the space, the intrusion of the ceiling into the visual space, and the way the design needs to flow through multiple use areas.

      This is a really great point. I moved into my home just over a year ago and have gone a little nuts with wallpaper and pattern. I hadn't thought of it, but it's so much easier to do this in my current home (which is like a rabbit's warren of separate rooms) than in previous homes where it was hard to know how to transition spaces when they're all connected and open to each other. I'm British by birth so I come by a love of pattern, wallpaper and some *clutter* honestly since my homes growing up were always this way.

    Sometimes I think the way you can paint walls a really bright colour in the UK is due to the natural light. I’m based in Australia and the daylight here is super bright - much brighter than the UK. It’s hard to describe, but it’s just different, and so sometimes coloured walls here look trashy and loud in a way that the similar colours look warm, inviting and fun. Maybe also about weather, atmosphere and the relationship to the outside surrounds too, as we generally, even in the south of the country, don’t need spaces to feel cosy for much of the year and coloured walls can really contain a space and bring the focus inwards.

    • @_wesleyhome_
      @_wesleyhome_ Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yes you really need to be in Seattle or Portland to get the proper kind of light to make UK paints work, at least the stronger ones. Someone elsewhere going for the look should find a similar shade then go about 2 shades weaker for actual use.

    • @BrittShields
      @BrittShields Před 5 měsíci +1

      I was thinking that as well. The weather can be quite dreary in those areas so the diffused light both invites fun colours and makes them look lovelier.

    • @happykidddd
      @happykidddd Před 5 měsíci +3

      This is a really good point. I also find that most paint brands sold at big box stores don’t do subtle/subdued colours well. I don’t think they have the complexity of colour pigments the same way brands like UK brands Farrow and Ball and Edward Bulmer have do. To work around this, I bought a Farrow and Ball fan deck off Amazon and work with my local Porters colour specialist to colour match. She can sometimes take up to 30min working on a colour but they always come out beautifully.

    Victorian fashion was heavily influenced by India.. fabrics, designs, prints and bright colors ofcourse. The home decor i see in some of the uk homes have a lot of style which i can tell has been influenced by India. Curtains, cushions, fabrics. A lot of older homes in India have red oxide flooring and its still very common in southern part of india. Also tv cabinet with closed doors is something what i grew up with. Almost all homes had tvs inside the cabinet either with doors or cute curtains.

      @natashatrilokekar2435 Před 5 měsíci +11

      Yes I've often thought this about Paige's preferences. There's a step back further in history about block printing etc that reflects UK's colonial history that many people who enjoy traditional design don't appreciate!

    • @starryeyed777
      @starryeyed777 Před 5 měsíci +9

      I absolutely love Indian design and block print and yes - due to the way India was colonised, so many of India’s designs and patterns have been stolen and claimed to be English country when it’s actually from Jaipur or other parts of Rajasthan. British decor is actually rooted in Indian design

    • @alittlebitofdeepa7573
      @alittlebitofdeepa7573 Před 5 měsíci +3

      @@starryeyed777 absolutely! Block printing has been used in India at least from 12th century and the method is 2000 years old. People who have been to India and visited palaces in Rajasthan like you mentioned or any other palaces can surely see where all the English interior design style comes from. Also, wood is something people are obsessed now in all the countries but in India its never been like a trend. It's been a way of life, all the furnitures are made up of rosewood, teak, acacia, ebony and sheesham since 14th century.

    I love British maximalist style of design but to do it properly you need years and years of gathering treasures and bargain antique shopping to layer into your decor and travel enhances this way of decorating.
    A very famous British interior designer in his 80’s (can’t remember name) said that if you gather all the furniture and decor pieces you love and adore your decor will be always be cohesive and beautiful. We don’t have to be concerned that things match together and that the colors meld together perfectly they will mesh together to become a timeless and a statement of true style.

    Love your commentary videos! I’m def on the more mid century side but I think a home without a mix of every era/style is just missing out on depth and interest! Love this, so fun ❤

    I had that bright warm yellow in my college bathroom and it was so wonderful. The room was very janky and cold feeling but once I painted it yellow I loved spending time int here and having candles lit was so cozy.

    I’m very inspired by all the interiors of the English countryside homes too. The colors, patterns, curated objects, and thoughtfulness are what appeal to me most. Funny and I thought I was a minimalist!
    Everhouse is a great channel for home tours.

    Doing this you really find out what you’re really drawn to in decor. It’s almost visceral, you just react to what you truly like, which sometimes can surprise you.

    idk but it's really cool to see you sort of embrace the older/traditional styles of these designers' homes (marked by more "clutter" and feminine touches) bc that has always been my style; meanwhile i'm fine-tuning my own decor to sort of incorporate the more modern, cleaner touches that i see you regularly use in your home(s)

    YES! OK here are my fave home tours: Rita Konig, Sophie Ashby, Gabby Deeming (all from H&G UK too), Jodie Hazelwood (Sunday Times), Christina Nielson (Homeworthy), Alvyn Wade (can't remember where, there are multiple tours of his NYC apartment on CZcams). Also, I LOVE Barrie Benson's home tour (I think that one is Schumacher which is another great CZcams channel for home tours). Paige, can you do a video teaching people how to prop style in their own home? P.S. Good luck on your Hinge date!

    You have to watch Skye McAlpine's Venice apartment tour. It's on House and Garden and might be my favorite home tour ever. The kitchen (and the rest of the house) is to die for. And I'm with you on not being able to decide between mid century and cozy english. I think my taste is just rich British person 😂

    These sorts of video k-holes are so comforting and inspiring. You mentioned how it’s a good way of finding talented people - after I watched the Brooks Christmas video too many times, CZcams told me to switch over to Skye MacAlpine’s Venetian Christmas flat, and it is a delight for the eyes. Her homeworthy tour of her London house is also delicious and made me buy some pieces from her tableware line, Tavola. Very much in the Brooks/Hall English eccentric style.

    The picture hanging bars were installed in old homes to protect the plaster in the walls. That was also the original purpose of chair rail and wainscoting.
