- In this video I take a few handfuls of chalcedony and agate including my biggest Carnelian that we found in the first chasing chalcedony video where we were hunting agates and see how they turn out, finalising the series from finding them in the creek all the way to the polished little gems.

Turned out very, very nice, indeed! I don't tumble my agates but do use sandpaper, different grades to polish up my stones. The finest paper being the black paper used for cars and the like. I wet this paper and it sands off any unleveled spots and leaves a nice polish. My stones are soaked first in lemon juice, CLR and peroxide and cleaned with a toothbrush, dried and then put in mineral oil to soak overnight. Then I sandpaper but only if I feel they need an extra polish, rinsed and another light layer of oil. Enjoyed your video, my friend.

Oh that’s a great idea mate. That would look pretty. Are you using resin or doing it like tiling sort of thing? They’re so fun to find though aren’t they. It’s like little extra treasures while bush/creek walking 👍

Hahahahaha! Oh man that made me laugh! Hahaha! Yeah I can’t wait to be able to cut some of my stones into shapes etc but for now I just like having fun seeing them get all shiny in their original shape.

One of the things that might be preventing you from getting a nice smooth finish on the final polish is contamination from the previous grit. Any of those stones that have interior pockets can hide small amounts of grit through each run, and if you don't get 100% of it, it will fall out in the next stage and scratch up your finer grind. Since the 3rd stage is usually your 500 or 600 pre-polish, then a trace amount of that in your final polish will keep it from getting glass-smooth without showing obvious scratches visible to the eye. I usually take out stones any that have the potential to store grit after the 60/90 stage and either grind out the deep pockets on a wheel, or run them again through the coarse grind for the shallow pockets. An aluminum oxide final polish will give a glassier finish, but as you stated, the hardness of the rocks has to be considered. Finally, at the end, you can also give them a final run for about 4-6 hours with plastic pellets and some soap flakes (shaving a bar of ivory soap works best) to give them a good shine. Of course if the polish step doesn't produce a smooth surface, then the extra burnishing with soap flakes won't really improve it much.

Yeah I’ve seen a few others have mentioned that also, it’s very similar looking stone but I’m not sure what moonstone is made of. They might be pretty similar in makeup. 😁
One trick to tumbling a 1 lb rock in one of those tumblers, add a few large stones, and a bunch of way smaller stones, the large stones will act as chisels, you should also add medium sized stones too. with the tiny rocks, this will cause the rocks to roll on all the tiny rocks getting a fantastic shine that way, this tumble came out amazing, especially the largest one.
Great looking stones when polished. Good job on that. I like how thats basicly how sand looks like, but then thousand times bigger.

I am just on step two of my second run today and yes I do love the sound the tumbler makes. It's quiet but I can hear it from the top of the basement steps. Love it.

What are you tumbling?
I am tumbling mostly quartz this time around so that I can see what they look like. The other rocks I did in my first batch... well I have no clue what they are other than pretty cool rocks. :)
I also messed up the first batch because I missed a few rocks with cracks that held grit so I didn't get a polish... just new scratches. So I took out the bad rocks.. cleaned the rest and have them in water until I get my new tumbler.
I am not sure if I would put those through step 3 and 4 again... What do you think I should do about the scratches?
Hmmmm... I can’t really say to be honest. I’d say probably doing 3-4 again would help, and just leave them for when you’re about to do stage 3 and 4 the next batch and throw them in with them. I’m still a novice but in theory that sounds right. Haha!

Oooh those are Pretty! Tumbling is a learning experience each time I think, at least for me so far. I need to run my batch with coarse again found the medium all clumped together in the tumbler dunno what I did wrong. Do and learn.

Ah crap! That’s happened to me a couple times now and you only figure it out once’s it’s opened and all poured out. I wish I could tell you what went wrong or why it happened but I still do it myself. Haven’t had any luck figuring that conundrum out. Good luck though! And thank you heaps for watching. 👌

Cerium and tin oxide work great on chalcedony, idk about tumbling but I have used both while cabbing and got the most beautiful mirror polish.

Sorry I worded that wrong, I meant to say idk much about tumbling XD. But whenever im not satisfied with my cabs I go back a few wheels to the lower grits and spend a bit more time on each wheel until I achieve the polish im looking for. I would imagine its the same with tumbling, I cant say for certain though. Good luck with your tumbling! Love your videos!

Haha! That’s all good bud, yeah so I haven’t used wheels so far, (one day hopefully), but it’s pretty much the same deal, so if they aren’t done well enough in one stage, then that will effect the later stages, only with tumbling, unless you check really well between each stage, you won’t know properly till the end polish im thinking. But doing it on the wheels is wayyyyyyyyy more effective, and you’re able to see each stone and each scratch while you’re doing it. I can’t wait to have that opportunity one day though. Thanks for the videos and the eyes-on info. I am currently on stage 2 of my first tumble since I was a kid in the late 70's. I've been watching a lot of videos on the hobby and am going to try a 5th and final step I saw called 'burnishing' using a bar of Ivory soap, shaved with a cheese grater. 1 cup of shavings per pound of rocks with water filled to just under the top rocks as usual. Tumble 24 hrs. rinse in warm water. His jasper came out amazing!

Those inclusions hold the coarser grit which comes out in the subsequent grits. I go in with a needle and pick out as much as I can and rinse well.Cool stuff

Hey man you should consider buying a cheap rotary drill like a off brand Dremel and then using a silicon carbide or rubber abrasive silicon carbide bit to take away a few layers while also shaping the stone to how you like. It's faster then using a tumbler and its nice to use if you want to see what a stone will look like polished right away. You can do about 20 rocks a hour for medium size.

Some how I missed this one. Great video as usual. In tumble mine for 2 weeks each step. I have 2 double barrel tumblers. One week I go to the #1 tumbler and the next step and the next week I go to the #2 tumbler and do the same. That way I'm not so freaking anxious about having to wait soooooo long to see results. Lol

Very Nice carnelian agate
The shine won't improve from that by polishing for longer, burnishing will help get a better shine but the pixelated rock won't be less pixelated by polish, the 600 or pre polish stage was the problem I think, it's all trial and error and eventually you will instinctively know when each process is right.
Some nice finds though, that dinky one was cute.
I agree that polishing longer won't fix the polish issue. I've seen a couple sets where the 'pre-polish' is 600 Silicon Carbide instead of aluminum oxide, and thought that was a bit odd. I use up to 5 separate grit stages, down to 600, then a pre, then a pol, then a burnish, and they come out looking like thick-coated candies.

After aluminum oxide polish I run a fifth week in cerium oxide , stones come out looking like they were dipped in glass

Niiiice stuff bro! The blue is VERY pretty! And I love the little carnelian drip! Flatten one side and it would make a very nice ring setting. ~3:30, I know how 3D those pieces look when not on camera, those are very cool! 5:45 Looks like a ½melted ice cube! ~6:00 I call those "tumbler bombs", as they can go off at any time! In the grits, it's not a big deal, but in the pre-polish or polish, it will prevent a good polish. I notice your beads are pretty dark. Not sure if they're the exact same as the ones I use, but if they are, they were white to start. Suggests to me you're using them in the grit and polish. I would strongly recommend having separate beads for grit and polish, just because they're really good at holding grit I find. :) Glad you're having fun with the tumbler though! It's awesome to see an identical barrel to what I run working away on the other side of the planet! The more you use it, the more you'll refine not only your tumbling process, but your selection process as well. It takes time, but eventually you'll even become selective about what you collect in the field for your tumbler!

Yeah those plastic pellets started off the same colour they are now, buuuuuuut, I have been using the same ones through step 2 to the burnishing, might be worth doing what you mentioned though cause I don’t wanna contaminate the following grits effect. @@Rookie_Rockounding As far as the bombs go, just do some risk assessment. The one you did turned out great! They don't all go off! Having some level of micro-crystalline (agate, chalcedony, whatever) on it will stabilize it. Just watch closely for signs of imminent failure, such as pieces starting to come off, and grit getting farther into the joints between the crystals than before.
I'm just working on getting another quick video up (less than 3 minutes, as opposed to my epic tumbling sagas to date) on using beads as filler. Lol, learning that buying the cheapest desktop was maybe not good foresight into video editing! Oh well, live n learn!

Yeah I reckon the chalcedony layer would have helped it stay together a bit better. Definitely gonna be careful with them in the future, they look pretty but not worth the hassle if the go off haha!

I have 2 batches of plastic beads. One for step 3 and one for step 4. I think you will see better results that way. I use my ceramic beads for step 2 if I need them for filler. I am getting good results I think. I do wish I had access to those nice rocks. I drive about 150 miles to find anything close. I subbed you today. I thought I already had but keep up the good vids man.

For your jasper, agates, pet. wood (basically all chalcedonies), and any quartz, you can't beat Cerium Oxide for your polish. It's a bit more expensive, but on par with Tin Oxide. If done properly, you'll get a mirror finish. Be sure to just have only the above things in the tumbler.
Ah thank you for the tip Joe! It’s funny you mention cerium oxide, my buddy benni just got a tumbler a few months back and part of the pack he ordered was the cerium oxide polishing powder. He just put his polish run on now so it’ll be cool to see how cerium works. Thank you again mate!
the green one is likely a green adventurine I paused the video and it looks like I can see some fine mica in the cracks of the stone sometimes they can be hard to see because the mica will be really small and evenly distributed into the rock but layers of mica can be identified with a loupe on that stone probably. It looks like it's in the color range of adventurine being more forest green. being in Australia you have a chance of chrysoprase but those are somewhat different color than what you found. you can just call it green jasper if no micas are present.
:) * aventurine. That was one of my guesses too. I also thought maybe chrysoprase. They're both pretty similar.

Nice stones, I follow another channel meminer who suggested adding some unscented soap shavings in with the polish. His always turn out awesome. I’m in the process now of trying it.

No , don't add the soap to the polish, when you have finished your tumbling but it's not a great shine burnishing will help, clean stones and water plus the soap, nothing else.
Oh wait! Yes good pick up there Symon! Yeah, don’t add the soap to the polish, you add it after the polish when everything is cleaned up, then run it for I think around 6-8 hrs. I did it for a bit longer but I don’t think it mattered. But definitely not with the polish. Thanks Symon 👍

Oh I would love for it to be 😁😁😁, but I’m pretty sure-ish that it’s chalcedony with small quartz crystals fused together. The light in this video wasn’t as good as I would have liked so it didn’t show them as good. But as always, I could be mistaken?

I was told to not let my stones dry between stages of tumble. It was said it made them harder to get a good polish. But then again I am still rookier than you. LOL havagudun my freind.
Ah yes I’ve heard this as well, I try and keep them wet between rounds but I think the main reason that I have been told is that it allows any residual grit from the previous round to dry up, making it like concrete and really hard to get off. But yeah I’ll always be a rookie, I hope so any way, always want to be trying new stuff and always learning brother 😉

What are your guys opinion of silicon carbide step 4 polish?
I’m not sure, I usually do only 3 steps of the Silicon Carbide and then the tin oxide polish. I haven’t tried doing a step 4 of Silicon Carbide but anything that helps bring the surface closer to perfection is worth a try in my opinion. 👍😁

I actually love the look of those tumbled from the creek!
Now that you have a bit of experience maybe you can help me out. Along the beaches east coast U.S. are tons of sea-tumbled agate and chalcedony so they are smooth but not polished, how would you go about finishing them off?
Hey Terwin, I would say tumbling them would be the best way to finish them. But you’d need to get a tumble for that. It costs a little bit but the results are amazing. There’s many ways that you can display them though. A jar with water (and a little bit of bleach, a very little bit to keep the water from stagnating), is another really beautiful way of displaying them. The water really makes them shine. You could also use mineral oil if you’d like. They dont become shiny like polished but the mineral oil is supposed to help make them look prettier. I haven’t tried this however but some people like how it looks. There’s a few videos on CZcams showing how to do it properly.

It’s a tough one deciding what to polish them with. I got the tumbler to start with and then will start building upon it with a saw and eventually a lap machine, wheels or a flat lap maybe... so much to figure out but it’s fun daydreaming about what I wanna get when I can afford it haha!

My tumbler has been running for 3 months straight
Do you mean it hasn't stopped for that length of time or you have been using it non stop for that length of time. I just started tumbling a week ago and I don't plan to stop until something happens to the tumbler. :) I did my first - First Step last week and was shut down for about an hour and then on to Step Two. An exciting experience to start this at age 65.

Hey Em Dee, I don’t really know anyone who sells their stones out here in my area that I could recommend. I’m really sorry 😬 I can see what Benny and I have laying around in our stuff. Unfortunately most of my Carnelian are already tumbled as I tend to do them first. I’ll have a look at home and see if there’s any raw/rough ones. I’ll keep you posted, if I don’t get back to you on here by this time tomorrow please send me a reminder, I have the worst memory 🤣
@@Rookie_Rockounding Trust me, nothing to be sorry about at all. I just have a strong draw to the stone and it's not found near me, and I don't live near a shoreline, can't go beachcombing yet. Cash flow issues, like everybody can relate! I don't blame you for tumbling it, lol, you have such a great eye for it and I love your vids on your experiments with your finds. I appreciate your kind offer, I wasn't sure if you had become acquainted with sellers in your rockhound community, and thought it was worth a shot to ask. Thank you again!

I probably wouldn’t be able just yet to organise sending you some because I’m pretty sure it would take me a while to get organised and send them off, and I reckon what I did send off might not be the quality you could get from a seller. It’s such a magnificent stone, I just love the colour of the Carnelian so much so I see why you’re drawn to it. I will keep my eye out though and want to help you our so if I come across some good sellers I will let you know. Or if I can pull my finger out and get organised properly and start sending things over seas I will definitely keep you in mind, you’ll be on the list. I just can’t promise anything just yet. have you tried burnishing your stones?
Hey billy! So I do burnish each tumble but I think I need to get some proper ivory soap. I’ve only been using dove 🤦♂️

Yeah I like that way sometimes. A but natural looking.
