The 100-Year-Old Myth of Gays “Coming for Your Children”

  • I get called a “groomer” on Twitter every day - which is weird, because I want nothing to do with your kids. What is it with queers and kids that gets conservatives so livid? Today, we explore The Gay Agenda’s exhausting past - beginning with the present. First, UK drag queen Crystal tells us how she successfully sued a right-wing activist who defamed her as a “paed*phile.” Then, Chelsey Weber-Smith (of American Hysteria) takes us through the last century of American history, where myths about the Scary Queer Predator pop up again and again, and again.

the thing about the groomer panic is it implies that giving children any awareness of sexual orientation and gender identity also indirectly protects them from what actual groomers exploit: ignorance and innocence.

    • @tristanband4003
      @tristanband4003 Před 4 měsíci +23

To our enemies, destroying that innocence is what will leave them vulnerable. They are wrong, as we know. Innocence is just another word for ignorance. Nothing good comes from trying to protect innocence.

Children can be empowered AND maintain their innocence. My nieces knowing the actual words for genitals hasn’t made them any less innocent. But it means they can talk about any abuse or inappropriate behaviour they might experience. As a survivor of childhood abuse, not having the words and being deeply ashamed meant I actually couldn’t talk about it for years.

@@Misstressofdons That's what I'm getting at, innocence is a semantic thing. I meant exactly what you're saying. A kid should be able to point to their parts and know what they are and understand enough about CSA to have the tools to react when they are the victim, even when their abuser is a family member or someone close.
Was also a victim of CSA. It is very frustrating listening to people talking about protecting children by abolishing education when I know first hand that education is what protects children. They have no idea what they talk about, turn their heads when shown evidence, and then act like their ignorance isn't something to be disrespected for . I fuckin hate people like that CONSERVATIVES... Ooops I mean 'it's not a political issue'

I'm trans and I'm also a parent. It's wild to me how dichotomized the interests of families/children and the interests of queer people are in the political sphere. I really hope we move past this because issues like child SA are increasing, yet there is little being done about it in a pragmatic sense. Instead we've just painted an entire demographic as "groomers" and pedos, taking away the weight of those words and trivializing the issue altogether.

Fellow trans and parent of 2. The radical demonization of us is bizarre. The last person who would try to force someone, especially a child, to be someone they're not is a trans person. We know firsthand how damaging that is.
I think, for some, they think that we will try to force kids to be trans because that's what they do to kids. A decent amount of people force kids to dress a certain way, act a certain way, worship a certain way, etc. So since their parenting model is based on indoctrination, they assume that's what we do.

tbh, you can always tell when people actually care about CSA and when people are just looking for someone to hate by how prepared they are to engage with survivors. Everybody is comfortable saying abusers should be [insert horrible circumstance here], but extremely few people are interested in actually exploring what life is like for the people left behind after CSA occurs. Activism that focuses exclusively on the character of the former, ala groomer-obsessed weirdos, never ever overlaps with activism that focuses on the latter, and so it's people in the latter camp that imo should be signal boosted to counter the groomer hysteria. SAMSN in Australia is an extremely good support group that provides a lot of public education for that exact purpose.

These people who scream about grooming only care about hating trans people or gay people.

Yeah, they never actually ask the kids, do they? I'm gay and trans, and I came out when my kids were 5 and 2. So my kids and most of their friends were exposed to FTM transition over the next couple years. They asked questions, sometimes, but I never had a kid freak out.
The most confusion I ever got was a kid who lives down the street saying, "I thought boys couldn't have kids." I said, "Most can't, but trans boys can because they have baby-making parts."
      She said, "Oh. That's weird."
Me: "Yeah. Lots of things are weird."
Her: "Right? One time my brother..."
That's it. Her mind wasn't shattered, she didn't become magically trans, she was just talking to her friend's dad at the bus stop.

The people agitating for making marriage between adult men and 8 year old girls obviously spend a lot of time imagining bedroom activities of those couples. It's not surprising their shadow sides bust out with accusations of "pedophile!!!" at intervals. Their own nature can be suppressed for only so long; eventually the pressure can't be contained; that's just how plumbing works. It's as solid as a confession. I can only assume the people who climb aboard their bandwagons are similarly afflicted with desire for children. I empathize with people who have to contend with those urges, but my sympathy dries up when their solution is to falsely accuse of others of acting out their own forbidden urges. Own up. Go to therapy. Don't shift your problems off onto people who already catch too much shiz just for existing and pretend they embody your kink.

I'm a straight cis guy and I find this current groomer libel moral panic kinda terrifying....I can't even begin to imagine how troubling this is for queer people. Though my friends who are give me insight into that.
It's just so....demoralizing. I didn't see this coming. I remember 15 years ago feeling quite hopeful about the future...it seemed like the tide was turning on all sorts of progressive cultural issues. With the older generations slowly but surely waning away. How wrong I was...
First...in thinking we'd actually turned a corner. And second...in assuming younger people would inherently be more progressive than their parents. Life could be so....wonderful. And it's just really depressing (and boring!) how we waste so much time on these perennial moral panics. I fear it'll literally never end...

The UK's imported panic about drag queens makes zero sense. When I was 12, the Big Breakfast (one of the most popular and iconic morning TV shows of the 90's) heavily featured drag queen Lily Savage. I don't remember there being any outrage from conservatives at the time, and there was no sudden outbreak of child homosexuality or grooming either.

That’s the thing about the Uk though, their libel laws are extremely permissive. so even though this is obviously a win for us, those same laws have been used to shut down criticism of actual bigotry by the people who push it. The people who have the money to sue are usually the ones who would want to reinforce hegemonic beliefs.
So it’s really complicated but my point is that us libel laws would not allow for that type of suit, and both people involved are public figures so the bar of legal defamation is even higher

I know Dave Thompson, the original Tinky Winky actor (I actually met him via John Simmit who played Dipsy), and from what he’s told me he was pretty much used as a scapegoat by production. Their excuse for firing him was that “his interpretation of the role was not acceptable”. In other words, “too gay”. I mean, the character design was pretty queer coded, so I don’t think Dave’s interpretation of the role would have made much of a difference 😂 He also said they told him to “camp it up”, so he spoke in a high pitched voice and production were happy with it. Then they changed their minds and dubbed over his lines using a voice actor with a deeper voice (yet he still sounded pretty campy in my opinion).

OMG Chelsea is so on point she's giving me goosebumps out of excitement! I've been reading about Northern Mexico's conquest because I'm trying to work on historical fantastic fiction / horror, now due to the desertic nature of the zone and indigenous tribes being nomads we got very little information about them and their costumes BUT I've found that there were tribes here where you could see from time to time people of the same sex either doing tasks of the contrary sex or being a couple and some tribes admitted this and some don't.
Another note of these colonial times is that Spanish conquistadors (most certainly desperately poor or indebted sailors looking to find richness and lands because he couldn't afford them back home) required permissions and orders from either the king over Spain or the ever in conflict local governors to actually attempt to conquer pieces of land and in order to get those permissions spanish men and frays would make up testimonies of how the indigenous people were not just savages but often had "anti natural" tendencies of sodomy, and that granted them spanish men the power to conquer and evangelize these tribes or destroy them if they're too belligerent.
The fear/jealousy of degeneracy and outright "sodomy" have deep roots in colonialism too.

This was very a great discussion, but this was extremely US centric. I understand that Americans be Americans, but it feels extremely weird to talk about the "coming for your children" myth without even mentioning, say, Section 28 in the UK. It would also have been interesting to contrast the 2000s gay politics in the US versus the rest of the-at least western-world, for example gay marriage being legalized in some other countries much earlier or much later than in the US. I understand that it has to fit into an hour-long podcast and people can't be experts on everything, but it feels like not talking about the influence of what is happening elsewhere really misses a part of the puzzle. Americans might believe they are the center of the world, but their politicians do sometimes look at what is happening in the rest of the "western" world for inspiration.

i know fora fact that my group of friends in small town mid America was not exclusively hetero. and that was the early 00s. no queer agenda then. its almost like so many of us were just assumed to conform to a strict hetero style even if we were in the end bi or pan. im so glad to have heard the one of my catholic school peers was married to her wife

31:57 - wow. So powerful and so true. "When you become a victim, you can tell yourself that you have the right to respond to your victimhood with whatever you believe to be an equal if not greater defense (which often is actually an offense) because the threat is not really there." I think about the effects this mass hysteria and "intolerance" has and how it directly leads to violence. This concept can also be applied to the genocide in Palestine as well. Thank you for talking about these issues!!

Defeatism is the last thing we need given the upcoming elections. Unfortunately, many progressives/ on the left are super dispirited to the point of not voting at all, and this can and probably will cost us the election .. which will have serious implications for lgbt rights. Look up Project 2025.

We have pantomime in the UK at Christmas for families and i can’t do a better description than quoting this from Wiki:
"Traditionally performed at Christmas and afterwards, with family audiences, British pantomime continues as a popular form of theatre, incorporating song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, cross-dressing, in-jokes, topical references, audience participation, and mild sexual innuendo.[46] Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson, in his 2020 memoir, summarizes contemporary pantomime as classic folklore and fairy tales loosely retold in a slapstick theatrical comedy-musical, writing: "Think Mamma Mia! featuring the Three Stooges but with everyone's back catalogue, not just ABBA's", and furthermore including audience participation reminiscent of showings of the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
we had visits to see pantomimes paid for by school, including hiring the bus.

Part me wonders if we should just lean into the accusations. Hell yes we're coming for the children, to make sure they don't grow up full of hate like their parents.

Looking back at the Tinkie Winkie thing, I am definitely glad that there's more LGBTQ representation on kids shows and movies now which is something I wish I had growing up. Sure, there's still backlash to it from both sides, but the acceptance and representation is growing.
As a kid, there were some kids at my school that weren't allowed to watch certain TV shows, play certain video games, read certain books etc, Harry Potter and violent video games being the most common. However there was this one girl that wasn't allowed to watch a show on Cartoon Network called "Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi" because the main characters were super affectionate to each other and acted a whole lot like a lesbian couple, and the same girl wasn't allowed to watch The Doodlebops because the parents thought it was "gay brainwashing." Like what..?
We still have a loonnnnnng ways to go until the straights finally come together to accept us. I hope that time comes soon enough. 😢

I always had the mentality that when someone wants to put you down they will always say the harshest thing. Because of this, ppl who call me a pedo for being gay, I just see them as wanting a reaction.
We can handle this in a few ways, fight back (which makes us look bad out of context) or ignoring the haters (while still ensuring we are advocating for ourselves).
We need more Harvey Milks and less TikTokers advocating for us.

    I don't think him is a him...well...completely...maybe partially, I'm unsure.
    Characters and their sensual behavior
    Chel in El Dorado
    Eris in Sinbad
    Jasmine in Alladin
Esmerelda in Hunchback of Notre Dame
    Jessica Rabbit
These were all gay awakenings. These examples can be and even are more sexual than drag stuff as far as child appreciation shows.
Some drag shows are PG and some aren't but ultimately parents choosing to take their kids there is their choice same as drag story time it's their choice to go.
