    Appreciate your evaluation. One thing that you do not see often in Sherline videos is a catalog of modifications necessary to make the machine usable. (Compare videos on the Chinesium competitors at the low end of the price range.)
    The trade-off is the 3 1/2 capacity versus being within a reasonable spec out of the box.

    For a small lathe like the Sherline, or even my G0602 you can pick up a replacement vial for a level (Starrett brand) for about 20 from LMS. Put it in a V- block until you can build a housing for it. It's a lot easier to work with and a hell of a lot cheaper. Thanks, for the video.

    I purchased A preowned “Last Word” like in your video. But it was missing the section you have in the tool holder side. 😗 The EBay add failed to disclose that fact & when I purchased it a year ago I didn’t know what I was looking at. I asked a buddy if $70 was a good deal for the Starrett “Last Word” indicator & he said get it.
    Great Job on Video!! I picked up several new things from viewing it! 🙏Thank U Sir🙏

    You recommend drill rod as the reference you use for measuring runout. I have found considerable variation between pieces of drill rod. Even your own video shows variation near the end. What I have found that does not have variation are pin gauges, also called plug gauges. You don't need a specific size. for any size will do. I have two sizes, one which I use with smaller chucks and one which I use with larger chucks. The least expensive pin gauges sell for about $5, and are specified to be within one tenth. 0.0001". You can also find used pin gauges of a higher quality for about $10, which when new were specified to be within 40 micro-inches 0.000040", which are my personal preference.

    Love your very informative videos. Very helpful. Thanks so much.
    One question. Some of your accessories and dials has a semi-flat black finish to them (like your "Last Word indicator). Did you buy them that way or have them re-finished. It makes for a very nice set up look.

    The video has helped me immeasurably. Do you see this lathe being equipped to turn, part, and thread 314L, 303, and 316 .75 inch stainless steel diameter rod? Thank you.

    • @MiniMachining
      @MiniMachining  Před 8 lety

      Stainless will be fine as will 3/4" diameter. Only limit really is how fast/deep you can cut. Threading will be limited to smaller sizes, not going to be able to do larger threads on the sherline... don't remember off the top of my head the recommended max

  • @jackpantry1447
    @jackpantry1447 Před 7 lety

    I like your video, but you only talk about visual alignment of the spindle versus the tail stock. I found that my lathe had a misalignment of the 0.001" per inch of the spindle versus the ways. That caused scrapping many pieces. I eventually was able to reduce that misalignment to 0.0001" per inch, a 10 times improvement, and no more scrap.

    When checking the alignment of the headstock and tailstock, *gently* but securely trap a 6" steel rule between the two dead centres.
    Any error in alignment, between the two dead centres, will be exaggerated along the length of the steel rule.

    I have exactly same lathe at home and did even more measurements. Try measuring deflection of cross slide with tight gibs or put collet ring in . . . You will get much higheer values . . Over all good hobby lathe but not precision tool. 😆

    i think this video is good only for people who don't have alignment issues. this doesn't tell how to correct misalignment at all. i'm sorry, but this the part that i strongly disagree: your motor spindle isn't supposed has that runout. that is really bad even for a sherline. and your solution for misalignment is either 1) accept the tolerance or 2) buying better equipments? that's a bit weird to me. just my opinion.
