I have always lived nearby and as a small boy I used to sneak in with a few pals. I remember the old refreshments shop and I remember the old floodlights! They used to have greyhound racing in there too, as well as a speedway. What a great wee club the Rovers are! I actually yearn to go to a Rovers game right now.

I had family in Coatbridge, and I remember being about five-year-old in 1965 when my Uncle Colin took me a walk through the park. From memory, it wasn't as built up as this, and it was quite easy access to the park. I remember my uncle kicking a football with me on the pitch.
last league ground I was at, watching the mighty Fort William somehow get a draw! Lovely people actually and some good banter with the fans
Fulham still have Wooden seats that are over 100 years old , can't be touched as listed , another good video .

Bit of Rovers trivia, the floodlights at Cliftonhill were originally from the old Cardiff Arms Park before it was demolished to make way for the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff 👍🏼

Another piece of trivia, the much admired wooden seats arrived in the late 1960's from Third Lanark's Cathkin Park before the stand there was vandalised then demolished.

I went passed Albion rovers 2 weeks ago and i was going to have look at the stadium as its great club and have good history too. Also loving you are getting inside the stadium and get look inside them.

I left Coatbridge in 1980 ...to go to Adelaide South Australia ... we used to have school teams play at Cliftonville for a "Coatbridge Cup" ... and I remember going to the speedway there on

Great video. I remember going to Cliftonhill around 20 years ago for a Rovers vs. Thistle Scottish Cup match. The Rovers fans were really friendly and I loved the pre-match atmosphere in the lounge. I wasn't entirely sober by the time the match started.
Was that the gale force day where only time seen a goalkeepers kick out go back over his head for a corner ? Went with my late Dad who as a Coventry City fan couldnt believe how good the social club under stand was.
Caley Thistles cup game at Parkhead was called off as guttering blew off stand and was deemed dangerous.
@@alankerr2162 That sounds right; it was really windy. I had a great time in the social club before the match, chatting with the parents of the young guy who was playing centre-half for Rovers that day. They were so excited! A few Celtic supporters turned up because their match was off.
@@kyotocoversjimanderson782Thanks for your reply and we probably saw each other that day. Can you remember the Albion Rovers players name you met ? I remember meeting Thistles legend striker Scott McLean "Trigger" outside the main stand after game. He sadly had stroke in May this year and I wonder how he is doing these days.
@@alankerr2162 I was racking my brain trying to remember the young Rovers player's name. I knew it started with an "S" and was quite unusual. Finally, I checked the Albion Rovers players list on Wikipedia.... it was Chris Silvestro!

Fantastic Video. from a Rovers X Ballboy, Club Shop worker, 50/50 ticket seller, Programme seller , Programme designer for 20 odd years, ran the website and the online shop for years, helped out with social media) ... ;) ..Not sure If anyone else has mentioned you were about to say where the seats came from but got distracted - they were from Caitlain Park - Third Lanark's ground and The floodlights came from Cardiff Arms Park.

Quality videos. Love learning about Small clubs and their history. It’s what makes football. You could the English Non-League. Plenty of clubs that have even played in the old division 1 but are very low down.

Happy memories of visiting the ground when Motherwell played there in the Lanarkshire cup. Also, my dad went two games in a row and was greeted with "Awe you again" from the guy behind the turnstiles you don't get that at Stamford Bridge

Nice little ground at Albion. I am having difficulty in getting my head around the fact that over 27000 packed in there for a game against Rangers
It would have been different back in the day with people standing to watch matches I guess
The terracing opposite the stand was much bigger when that game was played in 1936. It stretched right up to where the flats built by Morrison Homes stand now, when the club sold that part of the ground in 1998. The curved sloping part of the ground at the Coatbridge end was open too.
11-1 It take us almost half a season now to score 11. Good on the rovers for allowing you in....

From September 1977 until 1993, the outside was a greyhound track, like many stadiums in Britain the revenue generated from this would’ve been huge.
You should come visit an Albion Rovers game, there’s a bit behind the stadium where you can look right into the ground, you went up there in your last video on us, pop down for any home game mate 👍🏻
"Spectators" there are known as "The Aberdeen Gate"! The polis, who had little to do during the match, would sometimes stroll up there and "move them on".....but as soon as they had gone back into the ground, they'd reappear.

A friend of mine who played in the same year as my brother in the the early 1960s big dunky shields played for the rovers He was recently named in their greatest ever team he sadly passed away earlier this year. When he played junior football in Scotland for baillieston he was known as the dirtiest player in junior football. I can assure you you needed to be seriously tough to hold that title

I think it was at Cliftonhill that around ten or fifteen years ago they discovered that one of the goals was too small.
Same for bath teams so no advantage gained !

@@cormac3542 They're from Coatbridge mate. It's as Irish as Dublin haha. Most of their support is from the local Irish community and they share a lot of ties with Celtic. Celtic and Albion Rovers used to play in a friendly every year called the Jock Stein friendship cup.
Also they are rivals with Airdrie which is a very orange town in Scotland with a lot of Rangers supporters so a lot of it comes from that.

I remember being taken on the pitch to safety by my dad in 1983 when the Section B and Rovers fans were hurling bottles at each other. Also played there for Airdrie Schools Select vs Coatbridge Schools select. Got pumped 6-1 if my memory is correct.

Yup. Shiny new sterile stadia feel soulless when you experience the unique, characterful historic grounds with personality, even though some may be crumbling and needing tlc. Seen so many RL grounds that were full of character disappear to be replaced by tin boxes. Shame.
Agreed. Highbury is the prime example. Arsenal lost some identity when they left there sadly

Our local example is the history of once mighty Hunslet Rugby League at their 'Parkside' stadium home which ended in 1973. What a fight to survive they have had.
