Catherine, David and Matt were live to react to a day of upsets in the women's draw at Wimbledon, while Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz rolled on in the men's.
I know Carlos spoke about the love of suffering, but it was Rafa who first shared this sentiment. Others like Novak and Carlos have agreed, but it was Nadal who first said it. ❤
the Paolini - Keys match was amazing. such high quality, with quite noticeable shifts in momentum. it was a horribly unfortunate way to finish, yet i feel that Paolini would always have had opportunities to close the match.
Yeah, it was a really interesting match. Paolini started on fire, then Keys dominated the 2nd set for 6 games. But the match could've been completed well before the injury to Keys. She was serving up 6-1 in the 2nd, then 5-3. She was up 5-2 in the 3rd. So it could've been finished 6-7 games earlier.
What? It was 5-2 Keys when she got hurt, right? Keys wins that match, for sure, if she doesn't get injured. Terrible bad luck for a good player who's never gotten over the top. Feel terrible for her.
I think there was too much talk on this episode about the psychological effect of Emma pulling out from the doubles that it was missing the forrest for the trees. The wrist being an issue was not really factored in, and I think that bothered Raducanu as well. During the first set, her first serves were below her 100mph average of the last two matches and she was definitely not hitting her forehand with the same pace she does. And once she fell in the 3rd set, I think she lost a lot of confidence in her body, especially as it was the leg that she had surgery on. Not taking away anything from Lulu Sun who played with such composure and unwavering commitment to her game. She made a lot of fans today. Just thought the obvious was not being discussed.
Guys, I love your podcast, so insightful, but I have to comment on RaducanuMurraygate. I just cannot believe the amount of time being given over to this whole thing, and Emma’s press conference was really the last straw. She formed a doubles team, they scheduled round 1 as a ‘night’ match before her singles the following day, but Emma felt soreness before the doubles. Therefore as she said it was a no brainer to pull out. It’s not as if this scenario hasn’t played out hundreds of times before, and Andy’s pulled out of doubles even with his brother! Judy’s comments were mind boggling however her clarification suggests, as David Law said, the whole thing is a storm in a teacup. I totally agree with David’s view on this in that NOBODY comes out of this without the cloud, and frankly I’m surprised Andy didn’t take control and say ‘nothing to see here’. But please this circus has to stop now, Emma doesn’t need any more pile ons.
I know Catherine means well, always, but Emma lost to a better player today. end of. Why bothered to somehow attribute the loss to pulling out of mixed doubles?
”But that’s not how she feels” is what I will the next time Catherine criticizes Swiatek for not speaking out about the Roland Garros scheduling. You can’t have it both ways and let someone else get away with not speaking out about something important just because he is British and near and dear to your tennis heart.
The Lulu Sun - Angelique Kerber comparison falls short. Kerber is a righty playing left-handed thus her attackable serve. Lulu is a natural lefty. As a Yank, I need a British translation medium. I am so “chuffed” when I listen to the Tennis Podcast!
Emma Raducanu is a lovely young lady. Why is it that Katherine, Matt and David can talk about the deficiencies of all players - but will never mention the deficiencies that have always been present in Raducanu’s game.
Murray knows how quickly people will pile on Emma. Private disappointment shouldnt lead to public disappointment when you are as experienced with how media works, like Andy
The men can afford to lack focus, make a lot of errors, play poorly in the early rounds, finally get it together and squeak out a win in 5 sets. The top women are getting eliminated because they can’t do that-2 substandard sets and they are out. We are seeing this over and over. Also, the injuries on grass must be making some players wonder if the slippery surface and 4 week “season” is worth it.
Maybe the top ranked players should be more consistent. If you watch a lot of tennis besides the majors, there actually aren't too many surprises in the final 16 when consider current form and surface. If you are good you can play on any surface. Even the strongest women players have proven that over time. The current top 5 are just not that versatile and many of their successes are match up dependent, whereas the top men's players are more versatile. Gauff would have been swept in best of 5 today as well. I'd rather not watch that
David is right. Andy should have helped front it. Andy had had a proper fairwell when his brother sacrificed his doubles tournament for him. Andy withdrew from singles ..because he cannot move ..and prioritised doubles. Emma had to do the opposite. Wimbledon needs the show courts now to catch up on singles ...not see an immobile Andy wanting further applause. He should and could have done the decent thing and happily accepted her withdrawal given he had already had a decent send off. You need to know when it is over....and there is still the Olympics.

The rain has really come close to, er, taking the shine off both the French Open and Wimbledon. Too much rain and too many indoor matches at outdoor tournaments. It's shaping up to be an very unusual collection of quarterfinalists on the women's side. A qualifier--Sun, Paolini, Vekic, either the odd Ostapenko or the obnoxious Putinseva (I'm happy at least one of the will lose), for starters. I don't think any of those four would have been picked for the quarters.
Bravo David, you're spot on with your opinion that no-one has come out well of the withdrawal situation. Andy should not have asked Emma to play in my opinion due to her horrendous injury record and for what?.... to indulge him on his farewell tour. There is no way a 21yo Andy Murray would have agreed to be side tracked like that at the expense of his singles. Then for Andy and his mum to post negative public comments about Emma while she is still alive in the tournament with a great chance to go deep, basically encouraging the keyboard warriors to tear her to pieces. Very poor. Such a shame to see Catherine's obvious disdain for Emma on this issue after seeing her so joyous at Emma winning the US Open. Wow, are you not allowed to make some poor judgement calls at 21? Also strongly agree with David that Andy could/should have protected Emma with some kind of supportive statement, knowing that she was still very much alive in the tournament. And what was Judy thinking putting out such a provocative tweet which was bound to cause such a reaction mid tournament? Really poor.
Brilliant, we’re both a day late responding to yesterday’s show but I’ve just posted pretty similar stuff. I like all 3 podcasters but on this matter David is the one who I respect. That Emma presser made me furious, it’s like it was filled with a bunch of gossip columnists with little interest in the tennis.
@@nickjenkins2916 Yep agreed Nick. The British know how to shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. Emma is our only shot at winning Wimbledon for the foreseeable and we should all have been 100% behind her, especially whilst she was still alive in the tournament.
I disagree here, Andy was doing Emma a favor not the other way around. And Emma does have commitment issues (bailing out on coaches olympics etc), she is young and she needs to improve that side of her personality.
@@user-dr5eh6xz2d Emma's confidence has grown exponentially since the start of the year. She's an all surface player. I expect her to take over as US #1 by early next year.

I know I’m not watching the Day 7 podcast live but I must say I completely agree with David’s comments about the “controversies” over the Andy/Emma doubles match that did not happen. Well said sir!
And I completely disagree with David on this one! Suggesting Andy should say it’s all good when clearly it’s deeply painful is a bit victim blaming for me.

No, gauff is more of give me an easy draw girl. Look at the list of players that have beat gauff in the last 6 months. She gets away with not having to face those same players in the majors. She's very beatable
Once again, 37 year old Andy could have chosen any other female player who'd been knocked out on Monday to ask to play. Why choose 22 year old Emma? Bad decision that put Emma in a really difficult position.
The way I saw it, it wasn't about him having another match it was about passing the baton so he chose a young player to inspire. The farewell match was about him. For me Andy was doing Emma a favor and she bailed out, she does have issues with keeping her word. The number of times she changed coaches. We don't exist in a vacuum our commitments and our word us our bond. I feel passionate about this and I agree with Ben Shelton on keeping your word.
Karma is a real deal - no matter how politically correct you will make it to be -- Emma is in the wrong. She could have said that she was not a reliable pick for Andy's last chance to play mixed at Wimby. I hope he comes back next year.
