NOT 1990s , it was 1985!!!!!! This song is genius and SO prophetic as there was NO such thing as computer dating, the internet wasn't really a thing yet, and we were still about 10 years away from it even being normal to own a computer. Those 2 male and female voices you hear are the incomparable Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson. Y'all should also check out Shirley's hit "As We Lay" from 1985. If you're an "old head" R&B listener like me, Shirley is definitely on your playlist. Charlie Wilson was/is the frontman for the group THE GAP BAND. If y'all haven't checked them out, you need to!! R&B/Funk essential listening from the 1980s. Charlie is in many ways the R&B equivalent to Steve Perry. His voice is just that iconic and influential. And of course there's Zapp's frontman Roger Troutman with his cool voice and sound! The technology you're hearing is a "vocoder" or "talk box". It was definitely popularized in the 1970s by Peter Frampton, but many R&B listeners will associate the sound with Zapp and Roger Troutman. Again, it's just so hard to understand how much this song pre-empts the computer dating trends from the late 90s and early 2000s. A truly amazing song from a super cool group!

Trenton Hancock:. I was twenty three when this song came out and was a big Gap Band fan. I didn't find out until a few years ago that Charlie Wilson was a vocalist on this song. I always heard Charlie's signature vocals on this song but I never put two and two together. Back then vocal collaborations were not a thing yet and I never gave a thought to anyone but Troutman doing the male vocals on this song. It was not until Charlie Wilson was telling how he came to be a vocalist on this song that a light went off in my head. When he said that he was a vocalist on this song I said to myself I should have known because I knew it was Charlie but I didn't know it was Charlie if you catch my drift. Any fan of the Gap Band knows Charlie's signature vocal rift. I didn't know that the female vocalist was Shirley Murdoch yet because As We Lay didn't come out until the next year. She has a signature sound too.

For the record: Zap never broke up... There was some issue that involved finances, property management and some unaccountable expenditures that lead to a meeting between Roger and His brother; some time doing that meet the Brother Shot and Killed Roger and then shot himself in the Head.... It took a long time for the family and the group Zap to be able to even think about music; however they were able to deal with the lost, come to grips with the grieve and forge a strong family == Then Zap began to tour and do shows again...
Roger to most that understand music is regarded in the company of Prince, Bee Gees and Billy Joel with his writing and work ethic...

  • @BigBull45
    @BigBull45 Před 2 lety +7

Computer Love was released in 1985 so the song was way before it's time. Roger Troutman left us way too soon as he was a great writer and producer of music, may he rest in peace. The lady singing vocals is Shirley Murdock and she co-wrote most of Zapp's slow jams along with Roger. She had some hits as a solo artist as well. Her hits include:
Shirley Murdock - As We Lay - 1986
Shirley Murdock - Go On Without You -1986
    Shirley Murdock - Husband - 1988
These baby makers would make great reaction videos also. Thanks for keeping us smiling.

*Amber* , years ago, there were computer dating systems where you'd fill out a questionnaire and it would be matched with someone else's in a computer, and sometimes people would find love or at least companionship. I'm too young to have experienced that, but have read about it, heard people talk about it and have seen it in movies and on TV. Different types of computer love have been around for a while. Technology making love happen. 😀
Also, this song was released in 1985.
Please tell Jordan that this song has been mentioned many times in the comments, not just a couple of times in email. It was suggested under the first video of them on your channel.
Check out their song "Grapevine" and also the version before it by the amazing *Marvin Gaye* .
That's Shirley Murdock singing along with Charlie Wilson. He's the lead singer of *The GAP Band* .
You should check out Shirley singing "As We Lay".
Also, I don't think the band actually broke up. They did have some time off for a while, and if not for Roger's brother shooting him to death, the band probably would have given us more.
Will you please listen to *Teddy Pendergrass* singing....
    "Turn Off the Lights"
    "Come Go with Me"
    "Love TKO"
    "Close the Door"
These songs can make a couple slow dance in more ways than one. [wink wink... nudge... nudge] 😉😀
My parents used to slow dance to Teddy's singing all the time as we'd giggle, then one day during a friend's party while in middle school, my first boyfriend and I danced to "Computer Love" by Zapp, and "Close the Door" by Teddy. 😳
I told my mom about how the night went and how I slow danced to Teddy. She said "Now, you know. I bet you won't giggle at us, again." 😄

This song was originally done in 1985. So I could see where Amber says that this song was done in the 90s. And since you guys are pulling it from the greatest hits package, that makes sense. You should check out the extended version if you haven’t already of this great song. I play it on my radio shows all the time.

Zapp was an 80’s funk, blues, & jazz band led by Roger Troutman. After Zapp’s self titled debut album Zapp I released in 1980; front man Roger Troutman would release a solo album in 1981 titled The Many Facets of Roger Troutman.

Y'all should try some more acts like Midnight Star, Bar-Kays, Johnny Guitar Watson, James Brown/The JBs (1970s), L.T.D., Raydio, Brass Construction, Mass Production, Atlantic Starr, Teena Marie, Mandrill, Dazz Band, Lakeside, Kraftwerk, Egyptian Lover, Brand New Heavies, Con Funk Shun, The Time, Klymaxx, Bobby Jimmy & The Critters, Skyy, Loose Ends, Brick, The Blackbyrds, Kashmere Stage Band, Ready For The World, Full Force, Herbie Hancock (1970s & 1980s), Tony! Toni! Toné!, Jonzun Crew. Also there is video footage of Stevie Wonder using a talkbox in the early 1970s. I think one of them is on "Sesame Street" and another is on a PBS show called "SOUL!" (different from "Soul Train"). A similar instrument from the same era is called the vocoder (which is what Midnight Star uses), but it has a more monotone sound than the talkbox. The vocoder does not have a tube that a player puts in his or her mouth.

Roger & The Human Body began in Dayton, Ohio in the Mid 70’s. The core of the band were brothers Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry Troutman. They toured with P-Funk in the late 70’s. Roger played backup in some P Funk tracks. When they signed to Warner Brothers in 1980, George Clinton suggested a name change to something more catchy. Clinton preferred one word names. The band chose Zapp, the nickname of percussionist Terry Zapp Troutman. They alternated Zapp releases with Roger solo releases on a yearly basis. The compilations usually include band and solo songs as Zapp & Roger. Roger was a multi-instrumentalist who took the talk box (hooked to a keyboard rather than guitar) to a new level). The male voice doing the scat in the vamp is Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band who was good friends with Roger.

Zapp & Roger both had their own individual albums in the 80s.
    [Zapp] in 1980
Roger [Many Facets of Roger] in 1981,
    [Zapp II] in 1982,
    [Zapp III] in 1983,
Roger [Saga Continues] in 1984, etc.
Most of their songs had that vocoder voice that Roger used. They had a very
funky sound throughout their career, but sadly Roger was killed on April 25, 1999
by his brother Larry over financial problems & accusations that Larry was embezzling
money from Troutman Enterprises Company. Larry killed Roger, then himself. They found Roger
laying in an alley by the company building. Larry drove a few blocks from where he killed his brother,
then killed himself. Very sad day for the funk/R&B community who grew up on their music in the 1980's
