NOT 1990s , it was 1985!!!!!! This song is genius and SO prophetic as there was NO such thing as computer dating, the internet wasn't really a thing yet, and we were still about 10 years away from it even being normal to own a computer. Those 2 male and female voices you hear are the incomparable Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson. Y'all should also check out Shirley's hit "As We Lay" from 1985. If you're an "old head" R&B listener like me, Shirley is definitely on your playlist. Charlie Wilson was/is the frontman for the group THE GAP BAND. If y'all haven't checked them out, you need to!! R&B/Funk essential listening from the 1980s. Charlie is in many ways the R&B equivalent to Steve Perry. His voice is just that iconic and influential. And of course there's Zapp's frontman Roger Troutman with his cool voice and sound! The technology you're hearing is a "vocoder" or "talk box". It was definitely popularized in the 1970s by Peter Frampton, but many R&B listeners will associate the sound with Zapp and Roger Troutman. Again, it's just so hard to understand how much this song pre-empts the computer dating trends from the late 90s and early 2000s. A truly amazing song from a super cool group!
Exactly!
yes yes yes !! "As we lay" by Shirley Murdock. Please !!
Always wondered if that was "Uncle Charlie" thanks for the clarification! His voice is so uniquely iconic.
Trenton Hancock:. I was twenty three when this song came out and was a big Gap Band fan. I didn't find out until a few years ago that Charlie Wilson was a vocalist on this song. I always heard Charlie's signature vocals on this song but I never put two and two together. Back then vocal collaborations were not a thing yet and I never gave a thought to anyone but Troutman doing the male vocals on this song. It was not until Charlie Wilson was telling how he came to be a vocalist on this song that a light went off in my head. When he said that he was a vocalist on this song I said to myself I should have known because I knew it was Charlie but I didn't know it was Charlie if you catch my drift. Any fan of the Gap Band knows Charlie's signature vocal rift. I didn't know that the female vocalist was Shirley Murdoch yet because As We Lay didn't come out until the next year. She has a signature sound too.
So right. I was still in college in Dayton when Roger was killled there. RIP Roger Trautman
Vocals by Shirley Murdock and "Uncle" Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band.
That was the cover. This is the original. But the cover was straight fire 🔥 too
@@heatmiserscottyblaze NO lies detected 🤷🏾♂️
Roger song on it too. Not just the talk box he has major vocals
I never knew when I've been hearing this song for years but "hey girl how you doing my name is Charlie last name Wilson" I never would have guessed I would have seen everyone as being in their own circle and that's it back in the day
@@heatmiserscottyblazethey are on the original
An R&B classic! Now you have to do " More Bounce To The Ounce ".
I agree. More bounce to the ounce!
And Heartbreaker. And So Ruff, So Tuff. And I Can Make You Dance. and…
Usually not big on electronified, tech music. But this was done VERY well. Bring it on. Time for my music education 🎶.
More Bounce to the Ounce was the song Bruno Mars stole for Uptown Funk.
@@RekrenZ Yep, no real talent or imagination anymore.
Try Roger's "I Want To Be Your Man". That's some baby makin music too.
Yes I've been wanting to hear anybody react to Roger singing I WANT TO BE YOUR MAN. So far nobody has that I know of so please Jamber, y'all know what ya need to do pronto. Give the people what that want and I'm a people. Love ya! 💕
A harder reaction I think to find would be Roachford Cuddly Toy 🧸
I don't know what kind of workout would go with this , and don't want to. Lol
FO SHO !!!
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I agreed with some other folks, " I Want to be Your Man" is another hit of theirs from the 80s that I would say is even better than Computer Love.
Agree & still have that greatest hits cd LOL
Absolutely!
I agree 👍🏼
Agreed.
Idk about better than this but it's also really good 🙂
Roger Troutman was about 25 years ahead of his time. What a creative genius.
Charlie Wilson on the vocals lead and background. RIP to Roger Troutman.
For the record: Zap never broke up... There was some issue that involved finances, property management and some unaccountable expenditures that lead to a meeting between Roger and His brother; some time doing that meet the Brother Shot and Killed Roger and then shot himself in the Head.... It took a long time for the family and the group Zap to be able to even think about music; however they were able to deal with the lost, come to grips with the grieve and forge a strong family == Then Zap began to tour and do shows again...
Roger to most that understand music is regarded in the company of Prince, Bee Gees and Billy Joel with his writing and work ethic...
😳 that’s horrible, I had no idea!! 😢
I came here just to write this, but you had it covered 👍🏾
Also Roger did his version of a female fronted act with Shirley Murdock, who killed it with her two massive R&B songs, from her debut album in 1986
That’s Charlie Wilson from the gap band in the background vocals
Definitely one of my favorite old-school jams, great song. In addition to Roger Troutman on lead vocals, this song also features Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson, lead singer of the Gapp Band, with additional vocals. Another great Zapp & Roger "baby maker" is "I Want to Be Your Man".
Computer Love was released in 1985 so the song was way before it's time. Roger Troutman left us way too soon as he was a great writer and producer of music, may he rest in peace. The lady singing vocals is Shirley Murdock and she co-wrote most of Zapp's slow jams along with Roger. She had some hits as a solo artist as well. Her hits include:
Shirley Murdock - As We Lay - 1986
Shirley Murdock - Go On Without You -1986
Shirley Murdock - Husband - 1988
These baby makers would make great reaction videos also. Thanks for keeping us smiling.
Here are a few new artists and song suggestions: Cutie Pie by One Way, Nite and Day by Al B Sure, Freakshow On The Dance Floor by The Bar-Kays, Da Butt by E.U., Let's Get Serious by Jermaine Jackson, Let It Whip by The Dazz Band, and Feels Good by Tony! Toni! Tone!👍👍👍
Can I thumbs up your comment a thousand times?!!!!! I've been listening to those songs since early elementary school days. I sang Let it Whip loud and proud as a kid and no adults said anything. It wasn't until I was an adult and heard myself singing the lyrics and the meaning clicked. Wow...as kids songs were coded and sounded good and we got lost in the music and melody!
This is a good list to get started with!!👍👍
Ok! I see you, Rod!
Cutie Pie, yes!
@@robertkenneth6517 Agreed!
80s soul / R&B , Now you are talking. Fat back band - I found lovin or MTUME - juicy fruit, both classics in my opinion.
So I realized a few years ago that this song was literally telling the future (internet dating lol)
Mans was a prophet! 😊RIP 😢
most definitely!
I completely agree
One of my all time favorite songs. My dad was a computer programmer in the Army in the 80s when this came out and we always had a computer in the house so this song really resonated with me. Oh, and I have been in IT for 26 years now, lol.
Rufus with Chaka Khan: Tell Me Somethin Good is a must for Female Friday. It was her first big hit and will be a must for your funk playlist.
Absolutely. 👍✌️🇨🇦
Great song.
Hell yeah!!!
Jim Eiden:. I love that song. It seems that many reactors don't go deep enough into Rufus Chaka Khan catalogue. I would add Hollywood and Stay to your list. All three of those songs would blow their minds.
Ugk tell me something good🔥
I have absolutely loved this song since I first heard it. Released 1985, no computer dating then so amazing foresight. Unbelievably vocals by Shirley Murdock (who actually co-wrote it). Thanks or reacting to this absolute classic that invokes so many memories for me too.
Don't forget Charlie Wilson (Uncle Charlie from the Gap Band) on the vocals also.
There was computer dating back to the 70's but it was not online internet dating like it is today.
Yoy would fill out a questionnaire that would be put into computer at a business office for computer dating. The computer would find the match for you based on people's questionnaire answers.
@@ajruther67 Ok my bad, That must be the inspiration for the song .
@@nickpreece1825 It's possible. I don't know myself but I do remember that kind of computer dating. I was too young at the time for it but old enough to know about it.
@@nickpreece1825 They had a movie called Weird Science from 1985 with a similar topic. It was in some people's minds.
If you are going down this rabbit hole, you gotta do the long version of SOS Band, Just Be Good To Me. Simply brilliant.
"TELL ME IF YOU STILL CARE" long version is great as well!
The Finest.
GAP BAND, CAMEO, KOOL & THE GANG.
Could not click fast enough!!!!😀 One of my favorite groups 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️ check out Roger Troutman/ Tupac “California Love” and SHIRLEY MURDOCK!!!
Yes! More Zapp & Roger! Love that you guys are diving deeper into this group, they are so underrated, definitely one of the best funk bands from the '80's. As a Chicano growing up in So Cal, I would hear their music all the time. Chicanos love Zapp, you can't go to any lowrider show without hearing Zapp blasting out of car stereos everywhere lol. Some other great songs of theirs to check out: "More Bounce to the Ounce", "Be Alright", "I Can Make You Dance", "So Ruff, So Tuff", "Heartbreaker", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Be sure to check out the music video version of "I Can Make You Dance" on CZcams. Has some great footage of them performing so you can see what a good show they would put on. Btw, if you've ever heard the Tupac and Dr. Dre song "California Love", that's Roger Troutman singing on the hook with his talk box!
I love seeing how happy this makes you Jay 🙂.
Guys this song actually was a hit in 1985 not the 90s'. Think about that for second.. Like Roger was up there talking about the future before the internet and dating websites were invented!
Bruhhhh... you just brought a tear to my eye. U talkin' 'bout nostalgia... 35 years ago, I was stationed in Germany, bumpin' this on the regular while driving down the autobahn. So many good memories of my late teens/early twenties!
I ran spot light at one of their shows. I had never heard of them, but have loved them ever since.
👍🏾 Wow I was transported back to me and my siblings who were supposed to be cleaning up and we blasted this song and dance for hours it was 7 of us.❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I would love to see you react to the WHISPER'S "And the Beat Goes On" and "Rock Steady" and the DAZZ BAND with "Let it Whip" Play the live versions.
The female voice Amber mentioned is Shirley Murdoch. She has a couple of great songs of her own that showcase her amazing voice. As We Lay is a favorite.
Go On Without You is another great choice.
Another good choice for Female Friday.
@@larryjordan3325 and Husband.
*Amber* , years ago, there were computer dating systems where you'd fill out a questionnaire and it would be matched with someone else's in a computer, and sometimes people would find love or at least companionship. I'm too young to have experienced that, but have read about it, heard people talk about it and have seen it in movies and on TV. Different types of computer love have been around for a while. Technology making love happen. 😀
Also, this song was released in 1985.
Please tell Jordan that this song has been mentioned many times in the comments, not just a couple of times in email. It was suggested under the first video of them on your channel.
Check out their song "Grapevine" and also the version before it by the amazing *Marvin Gaye* .
That's Shirley Murdock singing along with Charlie Wilson. He's the lead singer of *The GAP Band* .
You should check out Shirley singing "As We Lay".
Also, I don't think the band actually broke up. They did have some time off for a while, and if not for Roger's brother shooting him to death, the band probably would have given us more.
Will you please listen to *Teddy Pendergrass* singing....
"Turn Off the Lights"
"Come Go with Me"
"Love TKO"
"Close the Door"
These songs can make a couple slow dance in more ways than one. [wink wink... nudge... nudge] 😉😀
My parents used to slow dance to Teddy's singing all the time as we'd giggle, then one day during a friend's party while in middle school, my first boyfriend and I danced to "Computer Love" by Zapp, and "Close the Door" by Teddy. 😳
I told my mom about how the night went and how I slow danced to Teddy. She said "Now, you know. I bet you won't giggle at us, again." 😄
Usually not big on electronified, tech music. But this was done VERY well. Bring it on. Time for my music education 🎶.
If It Isn’t Love and Can You Stand The Rain by New Edition are some great songs to react to.
NE4LIFE!!!
Roger Troutman and Teddy Riley were the only one's using the talk box tho Roger used it as more of an instrument than an effect!
There’s a version that came out in 1985 or 1986 were Charlie Wilson is actually singing the lead vocals and Shirley Murdock is singing where she sings that. Also Roger is definitely on the talk box. But they removed Charlie’s voice because Charlie was on a rival label.
O my God I can't believe I forgot this hit!!!! Just added this my playlist!!!
Roller skating as a teen to this stuff! Just sent me back to another time ☺️
A great rollerskating song also is "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" by
Vaughan Mason & Crew from 1980
@@matthewchance8835 absolutely!
One of my faves of all time,i was born in 72 and honestly i believe the best era of music
For me this song is timeless, and of course a definite classic 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
At the end of that song I noticed how much Uncle Charlie Wilson sounds like Stevie Wonder 🤯😳
I was going to suggest that Song brings so many good memories
Zapp - I heard it through the grapevine .
Actually that's Roger, not Zapp
Oh oh oh... speaking of Shirley Murdock..."As We Lay". Great for female Friday. Also "How Can I Ease The Pain" by Lisa Fischer.
Also Jocelyn Brown Somebody Else's Guy and Gwen Guthrie Ain't Nothing Goin' On But The Rent.
YES
@@elementelnins1864 You gon' send me on a ol' school binge and I need to go to sleep.
YAY!!! our family is growing, there is now 275,000 of us!! CONGRATS GUYS!!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
Roger Troutman was a multi instrumentalist, writer and producer. Most notable for the talk box but he was also a bad ass guitar player 🎸 🤘🏾. I love how he mixes Jazz, Blues, & Funky guitar playing on Zapp’s hits along with his solo work.
You have to hear I Wanna be Your Man from them as well...
Another hand dance song!
@@bertisjordan1085 Is that the same as slow dancing or what the old folks called slow grinding?
Guys, have you reacted to the GAP BAND yet? Charlie Wilson of the Gap band is singing here; PLEASE react to their song “OUTSTANDING” 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Also, Charlie Wilson is from Oklahoma 😀
They reacted to Early In The Morning and went crazy for it. They also reacted to You Dropped A Bomb on me. It's funny that he had never heard of the Gap Band and he's from Oklahoma where they are from
@@craigreed1638 That’s great that they’ve reacted; I think I recall one of those reactions now. I hope they get to Outstanding, and yes, not too much known R&B out of Oklahoma! 😊
@@jacqueline4514 I'd rather the react to Humpin' or Oops Upside Your Head
@@craigreed1638 I agree with Oops Upside your Head
This song was originally done in 1985. So I could see where Amber says that this song was done in the 90s. And since you guys are pulling it from the greatest hits package, that makes sense. You should check out the extended version if you haven’t already of this great song. I play it on my radio shows all the time.
Zapp was an 80’s funk, blues, & jazz band led by Roger Troutman. After Zapp’s self titled debut album Zapp I released in 1980; front man Roger Troutman would release a solo album in 1981 titled The Many Facets of Roger Troutman.
"I Can Make you Dance" is my favorite by them. But yeah their catalog is great.
Hey! Please try their version of ‘Heard it through the Grapevine’!!! Saw Zapp with the Jonzun Crew at a skating rink for $5!
That version is fire!
Space Cowboy! Yeah!
@@portalofwisdom8858 No doubt, no doubt!
This song is so sexy! I've loved this song for 37 years! This song came out in 1985! I remember roller skating with the gorgeous boys! I was 14 and in the 8th grade. It still stands the test of time. YESSSS!!
Love this ❤️❤️
I remember as a girl skating slow songs to Zapp & Roger at the rink. Good times😊
I want to be your man is a weak in the knees vibe for me.
Miss Shirley Murdock on the vocals there. She also had a hit R&B single, "As We Lay", if you want to hear some more of her vocals. Great great voice.
When I was in 1st grade we used to put quarters in the jukebox every morning while waiting for the school bus. the whole bus lol somebody had to play it every morning all throughout elementary school
Y'all should try some more acts like Midnight Star, Bar-Kays, Johnny Guitar Watson, James Brown/The JBs (1970s), L.T.D., Raydio, Brass Construction, Mass Production, Atlantic Starr, Teena Marie, Mandrill, Dazz Band, Lakeside, Kraftwerk, Egyptian Lover, Brand New Heavies, Con Funk Shun, The Time, Klymaxx, Bobby Jimmy & The Critters, Skyy, Loose Ends, Brick, The Blackbyrds, Kashmere Stage Band, Ready For The World, Full Force, Herbie Hancock (1970s & 1980s), Tony! Toni! Toné!, Jonzun Crew. Also there is video footage of Stevie Wonder using a talkbox in the early 1970s. I think one of them is on "Sesame Street" and another is on a PBS show called "SOUL!" (different from "Soul Train"). A similar instrument from the same era is called the vocoder (which is what Midnight Star uses), but it has a more monotone sound than the talkbox. The vocoder does not have a tube that a player puts in his or her mouth.
Never heard it, but I’m liking the sound!
Zapp- I wanna be your man
Roger & The Human Body began in Dayton, Ohio in the Mid 70’s. The core of the band were brothers Roger, Larry, Lester and Terry Troutman. They toured with P-Funk in the late 70’s. Roger played backup in some P Funk tracks. When they signed to Warner Brothers in 1980, George Clinton suggested a name change to something more catchy. Clinton preferred one word names. The band chose Zapp, the nickname of percussionist Terry Zapp Troutman. They alternated Zapp releases with Roger solo releases on a yearly basis. The compilations usually include band and solo songs as Zapp & Roger. Roger was a multi-instrumentalist who took the talk box (hooked to a keyboard rather than guitar) to a new level). The male voice doing the scat in the vamp is Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band who was good friends with Roger.
Came out in 1985. Blasted it out of my 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ..
They started out as Roger and the Human Body back in the late 70's. I saw them in East Lansing, Michigan at a college bar .
I wanna know exactly what substance they used to envision facetime when the internet was still just a concept, computers weren't readily available to the public yet, and cell phones were just a crazy idea someone was thinking about.
Awww please go further down this rabbit hole! I Wanna Be Your Man, Heard It Through The Grapevine, Be Alright and so many more!
I grew up on this, 70’s funk, Motown, 80’s, and 90’s R&B. Zapp & Roger we’re so ahead of their time.
Dude this music group is my favorite the talkbox culture that Roger basically, began along with many others is truly something special he predicted the future with his funky music
FUN FACT - The woman on the vocals is the incomparable Shirley Murdock. who sang background vocals as a member of ZAPP before Roger Troutman gave her a solo record deal.
Can't sit still hearing these guys!! Some more suggestions are More Bounce To The Ounce, Dance Floor, I Heard It Through The Grapevine & So Ruff So Tuff. Thank you! 😊😊😊👍👍👍
This song came out in 1984!!! Charlie Wilson and Shirley Murdock were blowing their vocal chords!!!
I’ve been listening to these guys since the early 2010s and I still gotta bop my head every time this banger comes on.
I love seeing a sister listening to this for the first time her reaction is everything ❤
Man this was my jam in elementary school, love that I grew up in the 90s and got to enjoy so many genres of music at a young age. It really taught me to respect so many genres of music, the beauty of the 80s and 90s, it was all just music.
So cute to see y’all jam to this. You guys remind me of me and my wife lol love you both!
One of the most playalistic tracks ever!!💯💯
FINALLY! I have been waiting for y'all to get to this one! This is one of the best songs ever! This is my jam! I wore out my 12" and then made all the digital bits very, very tired when I converted this song to mp3! Talk about being on constant rotation! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Zapp & Roger both had their own individual albums in the 80s.
[Zapp] in 1980
Roger [Many Facets of Roger] in 1981,
[Zapp II] in 1982,
[Zapp III] in 1983,
Roger [Saga Continues] in 1984, etc.
Most of their songs had that vocoder voice that Roger used. They had a very
funky sound throughout their career, but sadly Roger was killed on April 25, 1999
by his brother Larry over financial problems & accusations that Larry was embezzling
money from Troutman Enterprises Company. Larry killed Roger, then himself. They found Roger
laying in an alley by the company building. Larry drove a few blocks from where he killed his brother,
then killed himself. Very sad day for the funk/R&B community who grew up on their music in the 1980's
Roger Troutman put out a single in 1987, after this some was released, called "I Wanna Be Your Man"...it was the very first vinyl record, a 45, I bought with money I made from working at my Uncles restaurant for $3.25 an hour, I was 13yrs old...I bought it at Tower Records, then went to Eastridge Mall to Foot Locker and bought the first Air Jordan's, they cost me over $100, my Dad was so pissed off at them shoes..then I put that Roger Troutman 45 on and he was like a
R. I. P. Roger Troutman and his brother how shoot him then him self right after. Tragic and the Talkbox godfather is missing deep from my heart. I was so happy when he lived and waiting for the next hit. But now i cry after him and his masterpeaces songs with his btothers and other muisicans. He was unik on live stage. 😢😭😭 Listen to his music when im down in my life and its make me wanna dance my life on. Hes brothers still doing some Great music. Roger Troutman forever ❤
Computer Love came out in the fall of 1985. It actually was a prophetic song about relationships on the computer before it's time. Another song that came out at the same time as Computer Love was Programmed For Love by Roy Ayers. It also dealt with relationships through computer before anyone had computers.
This was 80s. I used to use this song as a startup tone for my PC back in the day
OMG! Now that you said that’s Charlie I definitely hear his voice…wow
Computer love is the standard now ,ahead of its time conceptually ! Ig, tinder, bumble etc.
Zapp is an 80’s classic. The female vocals you here are from Shirley Murdock. She did have solo career after leaving Zapp. You should check out her song, As We Lay.
Love zap and roger. I grew up listening to them especially since roger was from my home town dayton ohio. Still remember when roger was shot by his brother outside his studio in dayton in 1999. You really should check out i wanna be your man
Hey. check out Roger and Zapp " I wanna be your man." that's the best song they got. you guys are awesome!
The Troutman's were part of my high school days. Unfortunately most of them are no longer with us. Tragic.
R.I.P Roger ( and Larry 😔) 🙏🏾😇
Brings back nice memories of the mid-to-late '80s. Very nice memories!.
One of the many funk bands out of Dayton Ohio area, so many other jams from Roger and Zapp
Saw them live! Welcome to my teen years
Wow, there’s a throwback! Pretty sure I had this song on cassette😊
Oh that 80s r&b! That's an area you really haven't done much of! Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, Ready for the world, Keith sweat, midnight star, the SOS Band, Morris day and the time, Jessie Johnson's review.... You will love it!
That is Charlie Wilson from the Gap Band
I think y'all should do a triple-play on this theme: "Computer Love" by Kraftwerk, "Deeper Understanding" by Kate Bush, and "My Computer" by Prince (backing vocals by Kate Bush).
Kraftwerk were before their time!!!! Computer Love was my favorite from the Computer World album...yes i said album. they are definitely still in my rotation...
@@chestergaytheEnigma I love coming back to them and that album!
This song was released in 1985. I remember it well. It was the year I graduated high school.
Speaking of 80 s soul Alexander o neal must along with sos band babyface the deele so many great 80 s artists thank you guys
Roger Troutman was behind the robotic vocals if you're interested more look up live performances & his interview explaining it
Honestly Roger Troutman didn't need the talk box, because his vocals were amazing!!!!
Those beautiful vocals your here are the wonder Shirley Murdock. You should do her song "As We Lay" which was pretty big R&B hit. The other person singing is Charlie Wilson from The Gap Band. Shirley also has a pretty good gospel career. In fact she had a gospel hit singing a cover of Lionel Ritchies song "Jesus is Love".
Zapp and Roger's has songs never been heard before 💯
My favorite Zapp & Roger song has always been "I Wanna Be Your Man." I hope you can react too that one of these days.
More bounce to the ounce is the real jam
that shit hit hard! my high schools dances were banging!
On the vocals, Roger Troutman, Shirley Murdock, Charlie Wilson
Hey!! 😉 Zapp was the group back in the day! Try Heartbreaker, I Can Make You Dance, More Bounce To The Ounce and Dance Floor.....look at Amber vibin'. 😀
A breakup is putting it very mild. Larry Troutman supposedly committed a murder-suicide killing his brother Roger before shooting himself. I don't know what happened between them, but it's a very sad end, they were extremely gifted, it's a shame to have lost them so early.
Jay, you can't forget that other baby making hit "I Wanna Be Your Man". in the late 80's .... well let me just say those car windows got plenty fogged up to this one! Plus you can give Amber that good ol side-eye while it's playing too!!!
