Hey Chaps! Would you buy a 'Gaming Phone' like this??
For the half the money I get a PS5 and an honor magic 6 lite plus some free buds pro 3
No. Not really a gamer
I'm a long time Chap but gaming phones aren't my thing. Steam Deck or Switch 2 is way more up our alley.
Yess but sooner the standard version to save some money and the design is still great as well as the camera quality ❤️
Yes. It looks like a normal phone this year, so I might buy it
The design on the back is great. One of the best designed models of all smartphones. But that's it.
I'm disappointed in the model change, which has diluted its identity as a ROG phone.
Thanks for testing the backbone compatability, that's my main use cash for mobile gaming.
Anything between $650 to $800 would be the right price for the 24gb/1tb.
you good, bro?
@@jordankamese5146 whoever pays anything more than that, will get what they deserve.
Realme neo 5 16gb/1Tb
Great review. Thanks, mate.
Main drawback is not battery, the main drawback is price to performance ratio .
Does they fix the finger prints scan? One of the huge issue of ROG phone is the finger print scene became extremely inaccurate if I use screen protection. It got so bad it cannot even scan my finger print.
The pricing killed it.
Agreed
Agreed. At $1500 i'd take a base tier folding. This years will likely have a gen 3 processor in it anyway.
I'll just buy ROG Ally Z1 extreme for $699 way cheaper and more capable.
@@nathanjuan6042 i was also thinking of buying it just now😮
12gb more ram than s24 ultra
I'm curious about the gaming performance when the new sony xperia flagship phone with the 4k 120 hz display while gaming with ray tracing since you mentioned ray tracing in a game with the asus rog 8 phone. The sony xperia 1 v also supported ray tracing but was not mentioned even though it has the snapdragon 8 gen 2 with it's 4k 120 hz oled display. I wish the ray tracing performance was mentioned with any of the youtube videos with games that support ray tracing and the games being played on the sony xperia 1 iv android phone with it's 4k 120 hz oled display. I used to have the sony xperia 1 iii but it does not support ray tracing and I upgraded to the sony xperia 1 iv but it also does not support ray tracing but I wanted a brighter display with more storage and full 5g support that's why I upgraded to the sony xperia 1 iv from the sony xperia 1 iii.
Which version would you buy for US? Does it run on verizon?
Question is voice changer is already install on rog 8? Like black shark there got voice changer
honestly the phone 7 ultimate would be a better option due to you most likely not needing the extra cores and keeping the old battery capacity
but even a fee months after release, the ultimate versions practically went out of stock and some retailers even blantly sells it as much or even more than the phone 8 pro
js dropped and broke my phone 5's lcd and had to look for a new rog phone (i was a sucker for the phone 7's design js cuz i mainly used the phone 5 as my first brand new phone after lineages of used passed down phones)
the old phone 7 512gb is also hard to find and ordering it even takes 10days from my local retailer so basically gonna take as long as getting it online (buyin from retailers does have the benefits of them providing the rma services done by them but if you dont mind the hastle of self reverse pickup for rma that wont be an issue but personally with the phone 5 not a fun experience with 3 rma requests to date)
i have a friend whose able to properly get the phone 8 pro from a retailer for me so that was the option i went with but phone 7 ultimate would be a good call depending on your budget (the phone 7 ultimate i last had a price on was a solid 100$ more than the phone 8 pro)
I'm not a gamer but I'm actually intrigued by this phone. If I were in the market for a flagship phone I would certainly consider it, although I would wait 6 months for the inevitable price drop.
Don't be this one is defective the 5s cheaper model is just as good
... Idk... I like the smaller foot print and better camera but I'm not a fan of that punch hole camera in front, up firing top speaker, downplayed look and it seems like 2 less buttons on the controller which used to have 4 buttons.
So which one should I buy the ROG phone 7 ultimate from last year or the new ROG phone 8 pro edition
New one is actually fuckin epic. I own both 7 and now 8 Pro... 8 Pro is way more comfortable.
@@Baleygrr ok the 8 pro then 👍🏿👍🏿
As a 6 owner either one will be awesome. Enjoy ur 8
Quick question, between the Rog 8 pro and the red magic 8 s pro which is a better option in terms of performance pls
If don't see price then rog 8 pro ofc
What is the space flight flight game shown?
Rog 6 user here. I love the new design on the ROG 8, but the none front facing speakers and smaller battery is a deal breker for me.. Was hoping for at least a 6500mah battery (as the RM 9 pro has). Price also waaay to high. So maybe I'll try out the RM 9 pro, but it is not available in Norway yet..
The thing keeping my away from the Redmagic phones are the speakers.
Yes, the ROG phone 8 speakers are worse than the 7 but still better than Redmagic.
Exactly what you said. I used rog 3 for 3 years and I was happy af. Wanted to upgrade to Rog 8 pro, but smaller battery and no front speakers is deal breaker for me. Went for S24 ultra.
@@Lord_Bender Yeah.. Pls tell me how battery life is on the S24 Ultra compared to the ROG 3
@@Stephanox69 I will tell you when I receive it 😃 . Rog 3 has 6000mah lipo battery. S24 ultra has 5000mah lion type battery so I think it could be much better in terms of battery "lifespan". Also my rog is 3 years old so its battery is not as good as new. I charge twice a day.
@@Lord_Bender Thanks mate. On ROG 3 do you use any battery app? Like AccuBattery or Battery Guru?
Hey Tom nice video. I am struggling to decide between this one and the upcoming Xiaomi 14 Pro..the camera is important to me but I didn't thaaat huge improvements on the Xiaomi 14 pro. Can you help?😂
The "US version" from the official ASUS amazon page does not work with ATT even though they directly state that it does on the product listing. You lose phone call functionality unless you dial some number to force enable voip every time the phone reboots. It also comes with some janky European charger and an adapter to make it fit the US outlets. Love the phone but this is a bit too much nonsense for me to deal with.
You dont need that max settings in modern games right now since medium isnt that different compared to high or highest

Yes thank you for noticing that mf pointed at him and fired wtf was that 😭😭
My rog phone 8 pro edition comes tomorrow I can't wait hehe. But just to clarify something the aero cooler only comes with the pro edition which is £1299 version. The regular 8 and 8 pro doesn't come with the cooler
What do you think thus far of phone?
Hey friend. The cooler comes packaged with the pro as you said but can you use the cooler on the non pro version, the rog 8?
@@guillermoflamenco405 I believe so yes
Does this phone work with Verizon?
Has the word "Pro" replaced the word "Ultimate!?"
I want to buy it but don't want the Ultimate model to come out later. You know what I mean?
Gaming phones are great and I love them however they just aren't good daily driver phones. The Asus rog phones seem to have their own unique issues that makes the phone annoying to use overall. My Asus rog 5 phone is the best phone I have ever used but also the worst. Why you ask well here is the issues I have had:
- The screen randomly turns off while using it (putting the phone on stand by and turning it back on fixes this)
- Fpos/ Pay pass doesn't always work (has caused me A LOT of pain and fustration)
- Wont charge if you wipe the screen with a wet wipe a few times idk why.
- Lags like hell for no reason sometimes.
- Phone gets uncomfortably hot while using it and charging at the same time.
- Sim card keeps disconnecting for no reason (accidently dropping the phone or dropping it from 1cm will cause this to happen and requires you to restart the phone 4 to 6 times, Incredibly fustrating.
- The Amoled screen flickers while using it a lot idk why it's not annoying but it just does it for some reason.
- The camera app/ software is broken so the camera is literally unusable apart from Macro (All pictures must be taken in macro for the phone to focus) camera works fine in apps like messenger, snapchat ect... so feels like a software issue Asus doesn't care about and will never fix. My buddy has the rog 6 ultimate and it has the same issue.
- The sound driver randomly stops working (phone requires a restart to fix) this doesn't happen a lot tho.
- The phone is incredibly weak and will break from literally 1 drop and that's with a good quality case.
There are more issues but I cant think of them rn so overall this is why I'm going over to Samsung so hopefully a more reliable phone or maybe the Rog 8 is great and should be my next phone? doubt it.
Mobo problem buy rog phone 7 instead 😊
Yea maybe ROG fixed those in the newer phones?
@@bitterbuffalo8997 Idk if I should take the risk of buying an rog 8 as it's a very big purchase for me and the problems the phone has are deal breakers and makes life harder than it needs to be and causes me un needed stress and 65Watt charging really isn't anything impressive compared to what's out there like the RedMagic 9 Pro+ with 165Watt charging. I feel like Samsung have perfected the daily driver phone however 120hz isn't great but good enough. The Samsung S24+ looks very interesting to me I just wish the charging wasn't so bad.
TRUEEE!! After paying Asus around an iPhone price, the MoBo of both my ROG3 and 5S just died on me just within a year of use due to lack of builtin cooling fan. Jeez..
My RM7SPro and my now new RM9Pro never had these issues. They're built like a tank.
The only reason why I want to get this over S24 Ultra are air triggers. Do you think they are worth it for aiming in first person shooters (emulators)?
Ikr it feels so hard to find the answer to this
I have used air triggers before on a different phone, it definitely makes a difference in fps games because you are basically holding a screen with ps5 like controls. However, depending on the game/ network, there might be a lag (use WiFi if you are in an fps game)
I wpuld test out winlator fallout 3 NV 4 etc. My S22 Ultra runs it ok but im looking for 0 lag
I come from an LG V60 and of course gaming phones dont have a good design besides atracting gamers but the Rog 8 design is of both worlds despite the camera is more of a mid range phone type of camera and the lack of mmwave for USA Carriers.
I wonder if they will release rog 8 ultimate? 👀
Or ROG 8D ULTIMATE ☠️
i have rog phone 5 base model (lowest one) and i am thinking to buy rog phone 8 pro top model as it is in stock in india now so should i buy it or wait for rog phone 9? please somebody guide me
Wait for rog 11
I'm just after a game phone to replace my Rog 5. I have had it for a while but now it has a crack in the screen and it lags when I kill genshin bosses with my team rotation I don't need fancy cameras or for general mobile use just purely for gaming purposes any advice?
RedMagic 9 Pro is what you're looking for I reckon
normal rog phone 8 or red magic 9 pro
but if your place ambient temperature 🌡️ is not hot and you play it on wifi iqoo 12 are fine too
Is it capable of e-sim?
No
can ROG 8 use Coolfan old version 'coolfan Rog 6/7' ?
No it can't
how big is the benchmark difference between the 16GB and 24GB version?
I don't have the 16 to test, but i'd imagine it's insignificant
@@Thetechchap Thank you
You dont need anything more than 8gb for a phone its overkill. You only need those unless you want to do dock it or do emulation (which is not recommended as it can heat up the phone)
most android games use a max of 3.5-4 GB RAM. So unless you are running PS2 or dreamcast emulation etc, there is no difference in gaming
As someone that has the rog phone 1/3/6 this one is not appealing to me they could of made it a zen phone instead of a rog phone. i liked the rog phone 1 back in 2017 because it didn't have a hole punch screen or a screen that went from edge to edge and that it had front facing speakers but now it definitely one of the devices i and definitely others would buy .but i do hope for the ones that want that to enjoy it
When this phone is availeble to buy?
A day after you posted that. In the UK the delivery date is the 30th of January
Why did they remove the front-firing speakers? It's such a shame.
The speakers are no issues. Me moving from the dual front facing rog phone 3 to the 8 pro. They're soooooo good. For a phone it's like carrying a pocket speaker just way more powerful. You'd be surprised
I don't like the front camera being in the centre
A battery downgrade, that's not suppose to happen! 💀💀💀
Rog phone 8 and red magic 9 pro is the same price at my place right now 700 dollars. Which one should i pick?
I had the RM 9pro and send it back last week because it overheats, I don't like the ROG 8 so I ordered the ROG 7 pro :)
@Stoyan.Svilenov I have I problem in the shop I'm trying to buy at. For some reason, the rog 7 or pro or the ultimate is more expensive compared to the rog phone 8
Then buy Rog 8
If you have low budget,go for RM 9 pro but if you want the best performance and higher budget, then go for rog 8 pro
@@Divinity1000 I already bought the ROG 8 pro
I just want a 3.5mm headphone jack and thus I'm here considering a gaming phone just to listen to music
Rog 7 looks more futuristic. I wonder why they went with a more traditional look with the 8.
It would be awesome if i could run other systems on this phone in order to play the titles i want
The most beautiful smartphone out there!!
The price I can get over but that support is a deal breaker at that price point.
Im in new york and i cant found the phone.
Best for Gaming
But can i play my steam games on it?
Upgraded Camera.
Upgraded Gaming Performance
Upgraded Screen
Downgraded Battery.
Downgraded Speakers. (Not as loud)
Downgraded Fan (No Subwoofer built in)
So basically Asus Rog Phone 7 is basically better in 3 areas.
The new phone wins in the other areas.
having punch hole is actually a downgrade in the screen area- so rog 7 gets 4 points.

Yes. If i live in the Amazon jungle then I will

Curious decision to focus on cameras for a gaming phone
Ikr , for a gaming phone the selfie camera shouldve been under display camera instead of a punch hole. Kinda disappointing
I'll say it over and over again, if the manufacturer doesn't care enough about their phones to give it updates, then why should I care about their phones?
Can't you just manually update the phone??
Guess I'll just wait /hope for rog 9 to not have the camera upgrades and just focus on gaming.
The front facing speakers have always been the game changer for me. Now they got rid of that, I'll stick with my Rog 7
There is a X+ mode when you plug the phone in with the cooler. It will increase the stability and the cooler goes in frozen mode.
I am not a gamer, so this is not for me. Even if I didn't use it for gaming, the price, £1299 for the 1TB/24GB on the UK site, is much too high for a ROG Phone.
Why do people buy gaming phones? I would have thought buying a mobile console and a mid-range for a similar price would serve most gamers better. I assume few people buy gaming phones now, hence ASUS making the design less gamer-orientated. A niche product that may be facing economic pressures due to the small market and high pricing.
For me it's either garbage exynos or chinese brands that always have a huge list of problems
I don't like the boxy look for ultra the one that has SD
I even went over to iphone for 2 years just because I hate exynos and currently looking for an SD phone

I bought this phone but I still use my ROG 6D Ultimate as my daily. The newer phone is my backup. Go figure. LOL.
The pwm flickering looks crazy high 😢
You can't tell that on a video
Price are too high for me.
I need a phone under 200 Usd/ 20k to 25k inr to 400usd/39k to 40kinr
Rog phone 8 still 2 years of os updates 😢
If I would decide to spend such money on a phone, this would be the one 😁 I just don't see the point in spending that much on a phone in general for an average person 🤔
I had a rog phone 2 and I loved the damn thing up until one drunken halloween party when I tripped in a small bathroom and dropped it. The problem I have with these phones is theres no proper screen replacement found anywhere. I get its probably a pretty expensive screen but its nice to have the option without having to buy a whole new phone.
Everything I found was a screen capped at 60 hz 720p
😢
the price... id rather purchase either a foldable phone, ROG Apply, Stem Deck or Legion Go rather than that phone. i mean I'm impressed with the design as its look like a flagship phone (but a gaming phone) but the price is way too expensive,...

Pretty good phone by rog at the beginning of 2024 considering of it beefy price i rather get his than the new iphone 15 base
Ouch, for the price, I strongly believe the Redmagic 9 is the best bank for your buck. I take care of my stuff so I don't really feel bothered by the lack of water resistance.
Very disappointed with the punchhole display and the removal of the front speaker which made ROG phone a unique offering. Now I'm not sure which phone to buy after my ROG 5 became obsolete.
The redmagic 9 pro is pretty good, it's starts at about 600 bucks and also has the 8 gen 3 processor, with a completely smooth screen with no punchole.
@@youngfigaro Tempting phone, but not sure if I'm up for daily driving that buggy software.
@@bitterbuffalo8997 softwares not bad, my friend has the 8 pro and it has quite a lot of useful features. Obviously slightly more buggy than stock android but that's what happens when there's so much more extra gaming features. Still think it's the best gaming phone on the market rn

If they matched the price with the Redmagic 9 Pro or even just close to it, I will choose the ROG 8 Pro but it is expensive so NO
Jesus Christ im so happy for the IP rating. My rog 7 got flooded in rain although was fixed.
This just makes me want the Zenfone more than the ROG.
It a must buy! If I have $1500 of spare money lol 😂
very nice
It's my understanding that the speaker quality is inferior to the previous Rog Phones. This combined with a smaller battery is keeping me from purchasing this year.
Not really true, the sounds is still very good and the battery is about the same. Only slightly less. I own 7 and 8 Pro. 8 Pro wins by long shot, people underestimate it.
Imma just go with the redmagic 9 pro
*hears Game Genie then flashes back to 1994*
It's basically the Zenfone 11 Pro now.
As far the software support is concerned, a friend of mine told me yesterday that Asus is leant to push up to 3 Android major updates this year with their Rog Phone 8 series lineup as well as their next ZenFone 11 one 🤓
Yes, that was the norm for Rog Phone 5. We had Android 11 to 13. Do not expect good support from Asus if anything happens. ROG phones are notorious to have hardware issues. In fact after almost 3 years of Rog Phone 5 ownership, my Wifi module somehow just died today and two service centers is suggesting i replace the mainboard. I am intrigued for the ROG Phone 8, but i am skeptical of how it'll perform in the long run. The price itself though, is such a huge turn off
@@Jack2421992 OK so only two Android updates from 11 to 13... OnePlus 12 is officially supported from Android 14 to 18... 🥳
Just buy the ROG Ally for gaming and portable pc
you immediately lost me when you said you figured gaming phones were pointless. They watered down the 8 to a point where it's just a regular flagship. I'm looking to see if it's still worth it now that they sold out, but your opinion is clearly leaning towards a preference of a standard flagship
I miss the futuristic design quality Asus is known for.
The price is more than previous models and change to punch hole is annoy.

A bit too toy-like for me at my age but it's not aimed at me, of course. As you say, Tom, any decent flagship/upper-mid phone can handle the latest tranche of android games anyway.
There is nothing toylike about this phone, i rarely use it for gaming i use rog 7 for my daily driver. The 6000 mah battery and the internal specs all rival S23 ultra at half the cost. Only drawback is it is heavy. Rog 8 reduces the weight.
Also, ROG benefits from detaching the battery when you're gaming on a charge. Helps with battery longevity
$1500?!?! No way man.... doesnt really matter how good the specs are or how good the phone even is ... thats insane....

I am choosing between this phone ans s24 ultra.
Samsung has greater cameras. But asus has greater performance and desugn... triggers... Greater.
BTW now I am using asus 5s.
I see everyone saying “pinhole front cam ruined it”, and what did you want them to do? There’s 3 options: no front cam, pinhole, or under screen cam:
No cam is an option, but not when they are trying to meet a bigger market, after a lot of people complained it was missing “flagship hardware” with the 7.
Under screen front cam technology is not good yet. The Red Magic 9 front cam is soooo bad, every review says you might as well just not have it at all. It’s pretty bad. Until the tech gets better, these really shouldn’t be installed on any phone.
Pinhole cam is the best for given screen space, while providing the best picture quality (for a gaming phone).
Gaming phones don’t need amazing cameras, but Asus is going for “daily driver gamer phone” here. At least they give the options in settings to load most things just below the pinhole, to get the best experience out of the screen uninterrupted.
I don’t own one, currently browsing between the ROG and the Red Magic for an Android (coming back to Android from iPhone after years of use), but the cam setup on the ROG makes sense.
On other camera comparison, rog 8 pro has even more vibrant than iphone 15 pro max
Its a fantastic gaming phone but the price is kinda ....... Whatever buy Redmagic 9 pro instead its much cheaper and with same professor
does cooler still have subwoofer?
No
the best phone of 2024!
Apple’s long standing performance crown is slowly being withered away by the competition!
don't worry, there will be an iPhone 16 pro giga max soon which is the same as the 15 pro but with the Snapdragon 8 3gen :D
Red magic 9 pro, notch less, camera bump less. Cheaper than rog. 😢
How come when you pull the 8 pro out of your pocket, it looks big but when you're playing a game, it's small 😂
