I’ve got a springer from Southaven Kennels. She is an awesome waterfowl retriever and her drive is second to none. Amazing dog. My next duck dog will also come from Southaven Kennels.

I was raised with and have had springers all my life. I love the breed! Labs definitely have the advantage in extreme cold and goose retrieves but aside from that they are excellent across the board. That coat IS a sponge, and sure to be a tangled mess in an upland field unless kept trimmed or shaved. Can't wait to see the summer content FDH!

I 100% agree with Barton Ramsey about the Spaniel’s. I have a 2 year old Boykin named Vieuxdoo. He has picked up around 200 birds so far in his life. I trained him myself. When I show up to hunt with other people they say that thing will go get ducks? Lol I say well I didn’t bring him just to look at him. One particular instance to go along with what Barton said about nose work. We shot a gadwall that sailed a long ways from us. While we were going after to retrieve it I send him in the general direction of the duck. When he found where that duck crossed onto land he locked up with nose strait to the ground and his nubby tail going 1000 miles and hour. He followed up over the hill and about 30 seconds later up over the top he comes with a duck and brairs in his mouth. Lol excellent noses.

I have a Golden and a Springer, got them as puppies at the same time. The Golden is so affectionate, so friendly, sweet, craving of attention....smart, but would rather stop to be petted. The springer? Sweet dog and all but laser focused on whatever task you get them trained on. Mine will play fetch 8 hours a day if you let her. Set the all down at your feet and bark for 30 minutes straight if you don't pick the ball up and throw it.

I'm sorry labs have nothing on a Springer solid 9 years of hunting my springer Bubba a 50 pound springer well over 3000 recorded birds in his time ducks geese pheasants qual dove, many of days in a duck club day after day below temps many of times we used a vest, he handled the cold just fine he would pick up big honkers no problem, don't get me wrong not all springers are equal some are small but ill never go back to a lab, once you hunt with a springer you will never go back. the versatility is so unmatched, Mis him to death RIP Bubba thanks for the 14 years of being my best and one hell of hunting partner

Not as good as a lab but they are a solid duck dog for warmer weather.

I’ve the best of both worlds with a lab x springer dog he can hunt a ditch for pheasant, woodcock and snipe but will retrieve all day long off land and water

Springer is double coated breed. Not supposed to shave their coat. Both lab and springers are double coated breed

Certainly not the best dog for bashing through cumbungi, lignum or phragmites bulrush here in Australia. However, there are always exceptions, infact I had a wonderful Ftchamp. Irish Setter dog that marked superbly, would face any cover, swam like an otter and could give the best Labrador a run for his money. He truly was an exception, l have never had another so for me it is a strong Labrador dog for my ducks and a brace of racy Irish Setters for quail.

Springer's are an Upland (field) dog. There may be a rare one that thrives in waterfowl hunting, but I've not seen that as normal in the breed.
