This isn’t the full story. Cats will sometimes throw themselves onto their back defensively. The difference is that a scared, defensive cat will have its back legs towards the threat, ready to claw, and will have its head off the ground, (ears may be back) looking at its opponent. It’s front paws will be ready, showing the toe-beans and even claws.
The relaxed cat’s front legs will be folded loosely to its chest , the backs of its paws showing.
There is also a half-way between, where your cat is inviting you to a play-wrestle. The ears and relaxed vs stiff body-tone are the big difference.
You must always let the cat win a play-wrestle or it gets spooked: you’re so huge compared to it, and it trusted you, so play nice and take a play-bite or two.

Why do my cat's lay over my face?

Hello .... Cats may lay on your face for a number of reasons, including: Warmth: Your head is the warmest part of your body and releases heat throughout the night. Security: Cats may feel safe sleeping on you because you're a source of security. Comfort: Your scent can be comforting to cats.
