Bee Gee’s wrote it and it was for Kenny. They also recorded it themselves. Dolly and Kenny had an extremely close friendship. His death left her broken hearted.
So many singers wrote songs that others recorded & got all the credit for. The BeeGees, John Denver, Mac Davis, Dolly Parton and Barry Manilow are just a few performers who were prolific writers for themselves and made others famous! And I saw all of those live except for John & Dolly. Barry wrote so many advertisement jingles that were all over the TV in the 60s & 70s! 😊
Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees wrote it for Kenny, but he didn't like it by himself, so Dolly was down the street and Barry went and got her and they turned it in to a duet. It went #1 on both the country and pop charts for weeks. You should check out their version of We've Got Tonight live. It's hilarious! They toured together for a few years and were very close friends. ❤
When this first aired in around 1983 we were so impressed. It was on the radio for months and months. It became the number one country hit for a male - female -for all time. Nothing to laugh at, the melody is captivating and the metaphorically themed words are so right and real. Barry Gibb wrote it. Still as fresh and lovely as the first time I heard it.
Kenny and Dolly were best friends for decades! And before he died, she sang another duet with him and it just brought tears to my eyes. The love she had for her friend that lasted forever.
These two have an amazing song they did before Kenny passed called 'You can't make old friends' It is amazing. And the Beegee's actually wrote the song. LOL
They were just having so much fun on that stage. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees wrote it for Kenny, and they were recording it and Kenny just didn't think it was working and Dolly happened to be in the building and they asked her to come in and sing, and that is how it was born. Kenny did a lot of duets with others but Kenny and Dolly were a unique pair, they said they were soulmates, not in a romantic way, but their spirits connected. This got sampled in Ghetto Superstar. Incidentally, about 30 years after doing Islands in the Stream, they did a song called You Can't Make Old Friends and the official video really demonstrates, they loved each other as friends for life. Dolly's been married 58 years to the same man, Kenny had five wives in his lifetime.
This was my parents song! When it came out my mother said this was their song! At some point I'm going to reference that on their headstone. By the way Dolly accidentally stepped on his foot and that's why she said excuse me😂❤ Kenny and Dolly were always super close friends and they sang so well together❤
Dolly is bigger than life… in more ways than one. Singer/Songwriter, plays guitar, delivers perfect live performances every time, had a variety show in the 70’s, has acted in comedies and dramatic movies, has a theme park and free book club for kids, and is a one of a kind icon. Barry Gibb also custom wrote and produced whole albums (Robin and Maurice usually co-wrote the songs that were released as singles) for other top artists. Please react to Barbra Streisand WOMAN IN LOVE, Dionne Warwick HEARTBREAKER, Kenny Rogers EYES THAT SEE IN THE DARK, Diana Ross CHAIN REACTION. Also, please react the Bee Gees and Celine Dion Live in Vegas singing the song they wrote for her: IMMORTALITY. Be sure to include (Bee Gees cover) or something like that to make it easier for Bee Gees fans to find your reactions.
Old school Kenny ..... "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition "Ruben James" 1970" or "The First Edition : Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)",
Dolly also worked with Kenny when he lost his money. She wrote him songs and often sang with him. Kenny was a great singer. His only problem were 5 wives with at least the last few too young and just in it for his money. He was still a great talent and a good person. Dolly grew up dirt poor and she believed the street walkers in town with the big hair, makeup and big busts were the classy wealthy women. So she was always going to grow up to look like them even though she was a good girl and shy and she did. It took her awhile to work out she picked the wrong things but by then that was her look. She still has it today but way classier. Don’t be thinking she and Kenny had a thing going. Dolly has been happily married to Carl for 55 years, he was always a shy farmer who didn’t want to be a part of her career. I love that in the last couple of years he has been seen with Dolly and let his picture be taken. The song was written by the Bee Gee’s for Kenny. It would never have been as big without Dolly because they worked so well together. Dolly is an extremely talented song writer but so were the Bee Gee’s. I am Australian and Green Bay have been my American team forever. I was so happy when they got that far and now you tell me I could have seen Dolly too? 👀
Thank you @Cath1027.. Bee Gee's wrote this one.. But Dolly and Kenny made it #1.. This was my 1984 prom song.. junior yr.. I liked it better than my senior yr song.. Stepping Out. I'm a country girl.. Like me some Kenny and Dolly more.. just want to say.. Kenny and Dolly were besties for decades.. Kenny always said.. never saw Dolly without full glam. I don't think anyone aside from her husband Carl Dean and her glam team seeing Dolly without full glam. Dolly rocked that Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader outfit in her dang 70's..
