    I would like to share my Swords of Northshire experience. I actually ordered a completely customized shikmizue. Truly custom made. I requested a 36" overall length, Ebony wood for the saya, a 24" 1095 carbon steel blade, shiny sharp, and brass end pieces for the top and bottom. It costs me just over $600 and what a great blade! The entire piece looks like an everyday walking stick, but inside a deadly straight katana. Almost no rattle when sheathed, good fit yet a quick draw, and the blade is perfect. Kudos to Swords of Northshire for a great job. You can't go wrong with Swords of Northshire.

    I like swords of northshire work . and you can tell that they take pride in their work . I like their polishing jobs that they do on their blades . they also do good tsukamaki work and in my eyes thats an important thing when making a katana . the tsuka is just as important as the blade itself . Great video. For anyone not aware the swords and weapons sold and customized at Swords of Northshire are actualy made by Ryansword and can be ordered directly from Ryansword for 50% less. I was skeptical at first but later confirmed this with the founder of RS. Nothing wrong with SON but my $350 katana from SON cost me $150 at Ryansword. I was still a bit unsure until my sword arrived and is one of my favorite swords now. I was so happy about the money I saved and the quality and how well it survived my bad cutting technique that I ordred 2 more custom swords from Ryansword.

I've gotten two from Swords of Northshire and one from another company called Lyuesword. I'm kinda done with those for a while. Its been a little while since I ordered it ... but I think I ordered it with the razor sharp level. I'm aware that it could make the edge more brittle ESPECIALLY for a 1095 blade. But! ... it also depends on what you are going to use it for. Soft targets? Tatami mats? ... razor edge will be just fine. For the shenanigans I was pulling ... hmm ... maybe not ... guess I got lucky. Still one of my favorite blades. Light ... lovely polish!! Great looking saya.

    • @goromajima889
      @goromajima889 Před 3 lety

      Yes i do recommend the yamato, IF u can take care of a sword. If ur new I suggest u buy a decent 100 pounds or dollar swords and after a while if u think u can handle taking care of a good decent or even expensive sword. And the Yamato’s in SON aren’t cheap and I don’t want ur blade to rust. And any metal sword will last aslong as u take care of it. If u buy a shitty under 100 dollar/pound sword it will not survive at all unless u just leave it on the wall. And the way to take care of a sword, just google it but in a simple version for you, every month or 2 clean oil then wipe it down so it doesn’t rust. And don’t speak to the blade or touch it because u will leave rust marks easily. For you I would suggest just getting as I said 100 one for now then go in for the yamato swords or go for it now but if ur new to owning swords I don’t think ur I guess ready for it. Because I really don’t want you to buy one of the 2 yamato swords for you to get a bit of saliva or accidentally touch it and not wipe it and have rust marks because the rust will spread and stuff.

I still have it now but I haven’t took the blade out since. Probably rusted because this was like 2-3 years ago lol. But it only costed 50 pounds ( around maybe 60-70 dollars in America) and I wanted a basically shit one before I got into the juicy expensive katana’s. I now have 19 katana’s. I used to have 20 but I gave it to someone because I lost a game of poker. It was only a 120 dollar katana so about 90 pounds it cost.

    • @mr.excalibur1455
      @mr.excalibur1455  Před 3 lety +2

      "Razor sharp" - the blade is basically flat ground leaving very little steal to support the cutting edge... great for tatami mats ... bad for just about everything else unless you're at least decent with your edge alignment. "sharp with niku" mean its definitely has a sharp edge ... but the cross - section / profile of the blade is closer to an apple seed which means there is more niku or "meat" of the sword ... more steel behind the blade to give a more robust construction. These swords tend to be a little heavier but are more durable in the long run. I hope this helps.

      @@utubepunk I'm going to be addressing this interesting design aspect of the katana in a video I'm going to be doing in a Hanwei product. It will be a while before that one comes out. But ... the short and small of it is that the bo-hi WAS a historical design feature of the katana. However, it came about at a time when the Japanese felt the need to design heavier bladed swords ... probably during one of the Mongol invasions. As the blades got heavier and wider designers wanted also to make them lighter again without sacrificing the wider profiles of the blade which were proving so useful. So ... like the Europeans ... they came up with the idea of hollowing out the spine of the sword ... thus creating a fuller or bo-hi. Contrary to popular belief the bo-hi does NOT weaken the sword or produce drag. It actually creates more rigidity by way of the ridge lines in the blade. The reason people often site that there aren't historical examples is because in fact there are VERY few examples from this period. And ... to boot ... after the passing of the Mongol invasions ... the bo-hi, as with many fashions, faded away. It has only been more recently that they have returned as an aesthetically pleasing design feature.
