The theme for Stage 8, Wall. My favorite song in this game. Composed by Toshiharu Yamanishi, Takeshi Yoshida, Tomomi Ootani Thunder Force (c) Technosoft
I was kind ironic actually... argh! I'm totally aware of the technical superiority of the SNES midi sound processor, and regret the often gritty and saturated sound from the Mega Drive. But even so, I always have the feeling that SFC t. Actually, even if I really prefer the possible sound effects on the SFC, I also often feel that the melodic flow is "broken". Notes sound flat and cut, while the MD are more fluid and cohesive. I also think that many SFC tracks sounds desesperatly boring and rarely as complexe and refined as what you can hear on the Mega Drive. By the way, some great SFC tracks are just unplayable on the Mega Drive without butchering them heavily, while the opposite is way less dramatic: sounding better, while slightly less "punchy", or aggresive. But this track is not one of my favorite ont the system, by the way...
Limitations set the spawn of creativity free and eventually it creates a wild fire. Personally I experienced that having all kind of possibilities is a motivation killer. That's not the norm for everyone, but having less and working with what you got, feels so rewarding when you have finally created something.

Marcel Weber Just listened to music samples from those three games. You are right, they are pretty good. But the distorted guitar synth isn't quite the same as in Thunder Force IV, though the actual melodies are just about just as good. Also, I saw that Dragon's Fury was also made by Technosoft. Simply a beautiful example of game music perfection, it just builds one layer of energy and excitement onto another and never stops, easily a candidate for one of the best retro game tracks ever composed :-)
That sony sound chip sucked ass. SNES fanboys can argue it all they want, but the best SPC vs the best FM synth and it's still no contest. The Yamaha wins, every time.
I'd contest you on that one, personally. No denying that Metal Squad isn't utterly fantastic, but Venus Fire hands this its ass any day of the week. In addition, TF3 has a great soundtrack with plenty of solid tracks (Back to the Fire, Truth, Take a Chance, Hunger Made Them Desperate being my own favourites) whereas this is the only one that really stands out from TF4 if I'm honest because it all sounds the same otherwise.
I was referring to the games themselves as a whole, not just their respective soundtracks. As a game, I personally much prefer the brutal challenge of TFIV, but they both have phenomenal soundtracks, Hunger Made Them Desperate is one of my fav Genesis songs along with the other tracks you mentioned. But dude really? To say this is the only track that stands out on TF4 though is kind of ludicrous, (I mean maybe it is for you) but perhaps it's worth giving it another listen or maybe you're just not that into metal because that's the theme this ost takes over TF3's more electronic vibe. Evil Destroyer, Strike Out, Attack Sharply. Recalcitrance, Danger Zone, War Like Requiem gets me pumped to all hell. Great Sea Power, and Space Walk have perfect atmosphere for their stages and Stand Up Against Myself is one of the best 16-bit tracks ever. To each his own but whenever someone says "it all sounds the same" it usually means they simply have not invested enough time listening to the material, because I've said that about certain music albums in the past myself, and after more listening and memorization, I found myself to be mistaken. But whatever man, were all free to have our own opinions.
This is amazing. The SNES was all "look at me, I'm capable of realistic sound!" and then the Megadrive could just grind out these kinda crunchy, metallic badass songs, and then SNES looks at itself and cries.
The 28 people who disliked this know deep down inside that they love this song so much they can't handle their love for it and try to hate it for how much they love it.
Like most things Sega implemented in their home consoles... the FM synthesis employed by it's main sound chip was harder to learn and master than other consoles' wavetable or sample based chips. But when you understand FM synthesis... (and this holds true today!) you can make sounds that nothing else can replicate.
It really all depends on what the sound chip’s trying to play, IMO. For things like funk, rock, or metal, the Genesis is *easily* in the top of its league. But for something like an orchestral or classical piece it won’t sound nearly as good as, say, the SNES, because the sound chip is built for synthesis and not sampling, and you can’t easily reproduce the sounds of the kinds of instruments used in those pieces via a synthesizer. (This is also why voice samples tend to be kinda bad on the Genesis.)
@@harrisonhall1139 Oh yeah, the SNES certainly has some excellent pieces of its own. (The boss theme from Plok comes to mind.) I probably should've phrased that better initially; I mostly meant that the SNES chip is more "balanced" due to using samples--it's not necessarily the *best* in every genre of music, but given a talented composer, it can make any genre sound quite good due to being able to produce a wide variety of sounds that FM synthesis chips couldn't produce effectively.
I used play this music when i used to drive on the motorway on my way back from work. Listening to this and doing 90mph felt like you were actually in the game lol
I'm always astonished when I encounter people who say the Genesis had worse music than the SNES. Like, this is 2015 son... how are people still this wrong?
***** No they were not, look at the difference between the music from Thunder Force 3 and Thunder Spirits for SNES, they have the same music tracks, Thunder Force 3's music is done way better. Also, the SNES was definitely not known for having heavy metal sounding music.
The Whole Internet Yeah, definitely. I can't image this translating to the SNES without losing its soul. SNES has potential, but Genesis has its own sound that sets it apart from the SNES.
The Whole Internet Snes just worked out that choirs and strings sounded more legit in synths - it sounded pretty cheap to me, at least Sega took more risks.
This is the only song on the Genesis/MD that can give me chills/goosebumps, like it's insane a track under the limitations of an 80s gaming console can even do that.
THIS is what the Yamaha and the TI chips in the system were ment to. Crisp crunchy tunes. It is perfection. Perfection delievered by the very best. Make no mistake, many composers were good with the sound hardware, some were even excellent. But there is no other developer, who had the the composers who understood the strengths of the FM-Synth chip in the Mega Drive better than Techno Soft's. Their compositions were superb across the board. Thunder Force 4 and Herzog Zwei being the best examples.
I grew up playing this system and can list pages worth of games with scorching hot soundtracks like this one. The big surprise was that Genesis could belt out raunchy distorted guitar tracks. Never heard nothing like it before or since on the system.
It is the best piece of 16-bit music game ever written, in the whole megadrive and snes catalog. it would be incredible that someone released a studio disk on technosoft thunderforce IV music on real guitars and rock band instruments, as well as it has been made with epic golden axe megadrive OST with fan made covers. then these songs would be have also an intro and an ending, instead of playing in a loop. When talking about best videogame music, people always talk about castlevania, or final fantasy, or street fighter 2, but as usual the best game music is hidden in the games that are elusive to "experts" best games list, like the first stage of Steel empire for example, the roll ending credits music on world heroes 2 snes, most music in musha aleste, megadrive, or almost all golden axe music. They will just never appear on the lists, but are simply the best music made then, beter, best arranged and more epic in my opinion, to those more popular.
It's mind bogglign to me that people are still trying to compare the Yamaha FM synth to the SNES sampling method of sound generation. Very similar to a comparison between a drink and a meal, pointless.
THE better music I've heard in a video game (but I'm an old - and french - gamer, ha ha !). Thanks to you for remember this good ol'one in my ears ! a french metallibanger

The Genesis soundchip handles distortion really well.
Oh yeah, with a variety of sounds it does.
The sound chip has 6 identical channels, and operator 1 of each channel has feedback, which allows easily generating distortion.

This is like the Through the Fire and the Flames of Genesis songs
this is dragonforce of the sega genesis
Simply a beautiful example of game music perfection, it just builds one layer of energy and excitement onto another and never stops, easily a candidate for one of the best retro game tracks ever composed :-)
Breathtaking
CON CINCO DUROS Te encuentro siempre XD
Poque me buscas bien...
esto no es arcade, pa ti no vale xD
hombreee xD
Wow donde te encuentro. Y eso que vengo de hace varios años poniendo este tema.
Amazing how good this sounds all these years later.
This track is fucking *perfect*.
The virgin SNES SPC700 sampler
Vs
The chad Mega Drive YM2612 FM synth
That sony sound chip sucked ass. SNES fanboys can argue it all they want, but the best SPC vs the best FM synth and it's still no contest. The Yamaha wins, every time.
@@voodooturbo Snes sound was fine but I like this and Mushas music better, Not so much the voice sampling in the fighting games at the time.
"SPEEDSHOCK SOUNDSHOCK VISUALSHOCK, NOWS IS THE TIME TO SET THE 68000 HEART ON FIRE." -1995
The quote that still stands true to this day.
And also, in the case of this soundtrack, the YM2612 and SN76489 chips, heh. 😉🔥
MegaDrivers custom unite!
DAM SON 2: DAMNEST SON
GREATEST SEQUEL EVER CREATED
And that's saying something because Thunder Force III was no slouch in it's own right, but it kind of is when directly compared to this though!
What does any of this have to do with my Joel reference?
+Turnabout Randon Dont worry, I got the reference. ;)
Best soundtrack ever. Technosoft is amazing. They never disapoint.
Mega Drive never dies he will forever remain in my heart. Thank you for two years of joy =) I would like to return to my 1995 year.
This is amazing. The SNES was all "look at me, I'm capable of realistic sound!" and then the Megadrive could just grind out these kinda crunchy, metallic badass songs, and then SNES looks at itself and cries.
They knew this stage was hard as hell so they had to produce a banger to keep you going.
This is so 90's. I love it.
The Metal Cover of this and the lightning strikes are masterpieces just like the originals.
Absolutely Agree. 👊💯💯
The 28 people who disliked this know deep down inside that they love this song so much they can't handle their love for it and try to hate it for how much they love it.
The part where the game made you realize “ you must succeed”
...I think I just had an eargasm
Was it good for you too
@My Secret Account where
@Bruce yes, very
This kind of music makes my heart race, so I don't listen to it too often. Good thing it's a kickass tune.
I was brought here by AlphaOmegaSin.
I've been listening to this since 1992. And you ?
Yep
So have I :D
Same here, but a little later (1993?)
Thunderforce 4 is one of the greatest Shootem ups ever created, and so is his soundtrack. One of the best vg soundtracks ever & timeless. Word.
Judas Preist -- Hellion (The Electric Eye)
Can't unhear!
Indeed! ^_--
The Skull Raider dude, you right though!
Also reminds of "Soldier of Fortune" by the Japanese metal band Loudness.
Like most things Sega implemented in their home consoles... the FM synthesis employed by it's main sound chip was harder to learn and master than other consoles' wavetable or sample based chips. But when you understand FM synthesis... (and this holds true today!) you can make sounds that nothing else can replicate.
Rainbowdragoneyes used a genesis soundchip when he was doing music for The Messenger
Sounds great with earbuds.
Absolutely banging tune always loved this sound chip.
When people say the Genesis sounds bad....ahaha, that's cute.
Red Gem God I am not a 'people', I am a person. It wasn't necessarily an insult but okay, snowflake.
I have games in my collection just for the music alone. :)
@@astracrits4633 Yes the genesis sound chip was great for metal, but the SNES could pull some great tunes too: www.youtube.com/watch
v=Sh0LGMClffw
Too bad you couldn't Lightening Sword traffic.....
Try it on a motorcycle
Simply amazing track, one of the best Genesis OST's hands down!
This is top 10 best videogame songs ever.... holy effin'
hell this is beyond epic
I'm always astonished when I encounter people who say the Genesis had worse music than the SNES.
Like, this is 2015 son... how are people still this wrong?
The Whole Internet Don't kid yourself, this would have sounded even better on SNES. The soundchip in the SNES is objectively better.
The Whole Internet Snes just worked out that choirs and strings sounded more legit in synths - it sounded pretty cheap to me, at least Sega took more risks.
supercj12 heavy metal souding music on snes: watch?v=Sh-aY1ufcwU , watch?v=y9lfq3KSISc
Imagine being the guy who composed this. There would be no point making anything else, nothing would be able to reach this level ever again.
Okay, another ost to add to the collection.
Story of my life right there
Given the hardware limitations this track is a masterpiece
God this is so fucking good
inject directly into retro veins, 100% pure
Loudness - Solider of Fortune
^underrated comment
I love Loudness!
Also has traces of John Norum's "Face the Truth".
Both that song and this game are from the same year... Interesting
For me, this bgm also sounds like go go power rangers~
THAT BASE THO!!!! SOOOOO GENESIS!!!! 😎😎😎😱😱😱😍😍😍
*_ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!_*
yamaha soundchip
is burning
i had this on mywalkman back in the day :-D
and nowadays in my car
!!!!!!!!!
+bonggzilla This game makes my model one get hot. Not even joking.
+Eric_The_Red89 hahaha :-D
thats the magic of blast processing bro
+bonggzilla What about model 2?
OmegaKnightGTX It'll explode
Yeah that blast processing could burn your genesis if it runs for too long on ends, hahaha.
Metal Squad forever! ❤❤❤❤
people say that plok and mmx make the snes sound chip better, but with how hard the genesis flexes this ost i find that hard to believe holy shit
Plok, yes, but Mega Man X sounds awful. Reverby, shrill, and weak in bass.
This is the only song on the Genesis/MD that can give me chills/goosebumps, like it's insane a track under the limitations of an 80s gaming console can even do that.
Totally rad.
This sounds so much like a final stage/boss theme even though it's stage 8 of 10! Awesome!
Damn, This slaps harder than a step-dad on Father’s Day!
Best stage theme of the game....by a longshot.
First 1cc'd this when I was 10 years old... this soundtrack still blows my fn mind
This needs to be on vinyl
Rest in piss for jobel chat who couldnt find this, circa; windows 98 destruction 2
Im 38 years old, and i swear this track was one of the leading influences that lead me into loving metal (i was 8 years old when this game came out)
this song absolutely fucks
Retro bird sent me here…Nice
16-BIT THRASH!!
I watched a DF retro where they used this, but didn't know the name. Typed in "best Sega Genesis music" and this was the first result. Amazing!
What with boss after boss and that sinister organic atmosphere, on top of this great music, this really felt like the final stage.
A melhor trilha sonora desse jogo, uma das melhores do Mega Drive e uma das minhas músicas favoritas! Amo Thunder Force IV
One of the greatest songs ever on the Sega Genesis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😎👍😎
We see you, We are coming for you, there is no stopping us...come hell or high water. ...That's how this tune always made me feel. You WILL succeed.
Let's just say I have no words for this, it's too good
the fact that the genesis could even handle this god like music is fucking amazing to me holy shit
I grew up playing this system and can list pages worth of games with scorching hot soundtracks like this one. The big surprise was that Genesis could belt out raunchy distorted guitar tracks. Never heard nothing like it before or since on the system.
Dragon's Fury/Revenge, Mega Turrican, M.U.S.H.A., Burning Force, Shinobi III, Streets of Rage 2, Truxton, Thunder Force III, Pulseman, I could go on.
Listen to Gauntlet Arcade edition. Sounds nothing like the Mega Drive.
ik just a yamaha chip can handle this
It sounds even better on real hardware and not a poorly set-up emulator: czcams.com/video/2iic_FCyOkM/video.html
The BEST theme of smashing through a plethora of minibosses.
That plus the Neo Weapon (Claw) you have equipped makes you feel absolutely UNSTOPPABLE!
Used the hunter myself to get the enemies I couldn’t drop fast enough to engage. Only wished the rail gun fired forward
I cry a little on the inside every time I'm reminded that Technosoft is no more... :(
The soundtrack of this game is waaaaay too good.
when people say snes sounds better than genesis i just answer:
how many snes soundtracks have guitar solos?
khhnator how many have jazz solos?
Just show them this, they will blow their heads off.
Sega does what Nintendon't
Only one that I can remember: Killer Instinct.
Only rock & roll racing, unirally ,spiderman vs x men & plok on etc,,,snes do have guital sound.
This is MUSIC!
Toshiharu, Takeshi and Tomomi made sweet love to this sound chip man, holy shit.
Intense! Love it
This is badass!
16 bit megadeth
Sounds nothing like Megadeth.
or 16- bit Guilty Gear, it's awesome anyway
its 16 bit loudness
I think my blood just turned into electricity.
Hi SEGA fans from Russia!!!!

I was pretty sure this was the activation jingle on a foxbat.
Please listen to the Lightning Strikes Again cover of this song.
@@Kastafore it's beautiful, and great while playing Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
This is a great song, but I wouldn't call it the best 16 bit song ever. Probably one of the best lead/solos, but not song.
Between this and Musha This old Nintendrone is officially Jealous!
finally got to this stage and put my earphones on. dude it was an orgasm to play this level with this song. (+ i have a arcade stick for the genesis)
It's mind bogglign to me that people are still trying to compare the Yamaha FM synth to the SNES sampling method of sound generation. Very similar to a comparison between a drink and a meal, pointless.
Nowadays, nobody would understand what your comparison about "a drink and a meal" means.
No really, I tried. Humanity is THAT stupid today.
Or like a tiger to a lion
@VuurniacSquarewave true, sad thing is the fandom is a bloody cancer.
Or like an oven and a microwave.
Also composer of elemental master an other masterpiece from 1990
HO - LY SHIT O.O"
I had the chance to play it in early 1993. This cartridge is a divine piece, like this music.
THE better music I've heard in a video game (but I'm an old - and french - gamer, ha ha !).
Thanks to you for remember this good ol'one in my ears !
a french metallibanger
I once listened to this track while engaging in love making.
She caught fire.
