In no time at all you'll be going from 0 to 60mph, and back again, without even breaking a sweat ;)
The most important thing to remember when playing fast is to relax as much as possible. Playing fast is extremely difficult when your picking arm is tensed up. So, go to your happy picking place and try out these exercises to accelerate your guitar playing!

This is exactly the type of lesson I was looking for- I appreciate you & happy I was able to find this channel & video- BIG Thumbs UP & subbed!
To those who struggle and find it boring to hit dumb 4 notes in loop for hours:
1. Your muscels need time to develop
2. your brain needs time to establish and optimize links that will allow you to stay precise and in sync
3. right hand has to learn to play i sync with left hand. And precise picking is as much important as hitting fretboard. Takes a lot of time too.
4. It helps you to learn to stay focused and in line when you want to get loose and start "improvising"
While these exercises are booooring they do alot on background. Keep it simple.
In my opinion it's more useful to do this with different scales going through all keys because then you're practising your theory as well.
wait till people see singing excercises lol
It was my fourth year of playing the guitar and I was disappointed of how I was going. So my dad played some videos of how to get better and when we watched this, I had to do this for almost 2 hours. Thankfully now I am a good guitarist because of these exercises
I can say the same, I'm on my 3rd year I think or maybe almost 4th but I spent a lot of time slacking and I was so unsatisfied and wanted to do something with my musical talent, So I decided to take it seriously and practice every day.
currently working on a 1953 Buick, the one on your profile picture reminded me of it, i think yours is 55
You must be kidding!
pinky finger not cooperating
Ringfinger for me
Make it!! Show that belligerent pinky who's boss!
REAL
Getting tense seems to be my problem, after getting tense I get frustrated. This video is helping me a lot. Thanks Owen.
Probably the best lesson on the internet on how to improve speed which is important to me as a 73 y.o. newbie struggling guitar student.
wew... and i in my 38th thought i was to late to the party.
Anyway it is superb to keep that enthuiasm to learn new things and skills regardless of the age. Additionaly it forces brain to develop new links and helps to keep it healthy.
Good on ya! I'm 66 practice 3 hours a day... 👍👍
My problem is that after I make a bad note, I stop and rage for 10 seconds.
I have to learn to continue, but I think this exercise is really great for a beginner.
Thanks, man!
i usually rage longer time
The mindset has to be to NOT CARE about failure>>> if you are NOT failing then you are not challenging yourself... so USE THAT FAILURE as a TOOL to determine at what speed you can play & not be able to play well>>> if you go just a little slower than that you will practice at your top speed & keep everything clean... this builds confidence & you see progress & then you make failure your friend not your frustration bcuz it helps you know what you need to practice & at what speed to OPTIMIZE your growth... so failure is your friend... that's the reason its called practice & if you challenge yourself then when you play live it is easy since you are not challenging yourself to fail LIVE!
I hope that helped bcuz the mental aspect is huge if you are going to overcome every challenge & be a musician at whatever level you can achieve thru out your life & for LIFE!
I found it weird practicing "1,2,3,4" so I tried it with a major scale and it felt alot better and I find myself playing through the scale faster, I never practiced with a metronone when I was first learning so I can play semi fast but completely out of rhythm. This video helped alot!
Great Owen, I love the way you can make me understand things easier
I’ve been playing 15 ish years and have definitely skill blocked myself from not doing these things. For new guitarists, definitely practice the fundamentals! And keep rocking 🤘🏼
Well said!
@@GuitarMasteryMethod and thank you for making these lessons free! Really appreciated.
Thanks Owen - helps a lot - breaks it all down - good practice tips.
Thanks for the exercises. I know this video is 5 years old but learning new things as a beginner never gets old.
Happy to help!
Great exercises! Just practiced! Will shoot to practice this daily. Speed is one of my biggest issues right now with my playing.
I know this video is old, but it really helped me out. Much thanks, even though it's unlikely you'll ever see this.
finally getting my groove better. going to practice the finger exercises n rythm great!
awsome lesson owen your lessons r great
My cousin teached me this exercise three years ago when I was learning to play the bass. It did wonders in my beginner hands. I'm struggling to play faster riffs on the guitar even after a year or so, I had forgotten how useful playing notes with a metronome like this is. Thank you man!
Great lesson Owen. I use it in different variations and speeds with the metronome on to get the rhythms clean.
Thank you so much great lesson.
great lesson thank you so much.
Monster lesson Owen. Thank you.
I will try this. I've been playing for a couple of year's but I seem stuck at one speed. If I try to speed up my fingers just seem to have a mind of their own and I mess it up. My pinky just don't want to do what I want it too. There are days when I just want to throw the guitar out the window and give up. I practice nearly everyday for a couple of hours each time. So will practice this and see how I go. My little finger tends to turn inwards I've tried many exercises for my fingers but had no luck. I don't want to stop playing as it's something that helps with being on my own most the time. Thanks for sharing.
much needed info. Thank you
4:23 sounds like “the man’s who sold the world”
Thankyou...💖💖👍👍
Great lesson! Thanks.
Willie Well done Owen you make a small exersize sound great
Another great improving guitar picking lesson Owen
Ive been playing 10 years. And yet these excercises are tough.
Thank You, Owen. You are my favorite.
Very Good, thank you.
Thank you for this lesson I was stuck and couldn't figure out how to play with a metronome
Rock on!
Thanks Owen great lesson
Thank you Owen. that really helps me. Excellent :)
God bless you for this Owen
Good stuff bud...Lovin the Wolfie Thanks
Hi Owen Thanks for this great lesson
Thank you Owen.
Been trying to learn how to start soloing as I progress throughout my guitar journey. Thank you for the tips.
Thanks you, very good
great lesson!
Ive always had trouble with this… for the past 20 or so years lol.. i can play little bursts of fast licks but I haven’t the stamina
This is getting to be fun for me now. It's starting to make sense. Being a drummer, I have beats pretty well timed. Now, trying to learn guitar, I was as lost as an Easter egg in tall grass. Now I see some "view" before me. Thanks Owen!!!
Hows it goin?
very informative.
Thanks Owen!
Thanks, brother you explain very nicely good for a beginner(22nd day) like me
now I can pick up & down nicely :D
took only a few minutes to learn it
Thank you
Great teacher
You are making me a better guitarist Owen, cheers buddy
@@GuitarMasteryMethod Just saying you make seemingly hard stuff easy. You have a great method of breaking it all own
I found that when I was was younger and starting to play fast that I started holding my breath. Work on that. It's very important. 😊
Been playing since 1987. Never too late to learn anything. Guitar soothes me and excites me at the same time.
Thanks I tried this exercise and this tutorial very helpful for me I unblocked my hand and now I play very fast God bles you :)
1:30 I thought for sure you were gonna bust out hoobastank 🎶 I'm not a perfect person....🤣
I really love this was a really simple start to fast picking and a simple riff rather than something really complicated. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
@@GuitarMasteryMethod You're welcome!
Wow Owen this is such an awesome guitar lesson right here man I love it.😃👍
No matter how lightly I play, I can't seem to properly alternate pick on my higher strings (the GBE ones that aren't coiled), the strings always slap into the pick when I'm trying to pick again and mute themselves, it's painful and Idk if it's me or my £70 guitar
subscriber. A really great lesson
best exercise.. ty
Thank you too!
This is helping me to break out of my habit of being stuck with playing only the 4th notes.
This is amazing, thank you
You're very welcome!
Thanks!
Q: Why do you appear to have a capo near your locking-nut?
Thx Owen! best regards to the Team greetings from the Netherlands Mate!! ps is this the Mexican EVH Guitar??
Thx again must be better than the cheaper Indonesian version I guess???
NGL, this workout really improved my thumb on my fretting hand.
Hi its valable for fingerstyle?
metronome starts at 100bpm if that helps anyone
Thanks , where r you from ?
Woohooooooo new level unlocked 🔓
It turns out my left hand has been fast all this time but my right hand wasn't plucking fast enough.
Exact I was in this level
Just realised my ringfinger is not really that well coordinated with the rest of the three, thanks :)
Would it maker it easier if I changed the strings because mine are all really loose
It might help if you use 'heavier gauge' strings. These are a little thicker. :)
bro is guitar jesus
THANK U WATCH .
Tried the free cheat sheet but video drops out too much. not sure whats up if its on your end or mine. im running at 10 mbs so that should be ample for video streaming. ???
@@GuitarMasteryMethod i figured it out and thanks for the reply
Are you from New Zealand?
I think i experienced a 50% increase in speed just after hearing the word "Relax"
1:14
Question are your resting your palm on the bridge?
What's the thing around the 1st fret?
@@GuitarMasteryMethod Thanks very much for the info - I've never seen one of those before!
IS THAT AN EVH WOLFGANG I SEEEE????
John Wick taking 🎸 classes in alternative World ❤️
Did ur metronome pickup speed when pick g went to dble time and back to slow when not, or was it a trick my ears play on me ? Could swear I heard an off beat tick but could be my ipads sou d not great either
Hi ... What is that on the neck near the nutt, it looks like wrist band?
Eres Jesús?
after +-30 seconds of fast downpicking my hand refuses to work
Now i can play like Malmsteen (i can't)
my left hand not working
it just takes time and patience. Keep up the good work :)
@@GuitarMasteryMethod
i had some few a years for speed licking practice but, my left finger still stiff, and finally i just play simple melody lol
Down picking please Owen..
Been learning piano for 17 years, but guitar fret pressing is getting the hell out of me🥲 tho just 2 weeks spent, will surely play good one day😌
thank you so much great lesson.
Thank you
You're welcome
