I will tell people honestly the only way you're going to get Chinese brush painting results is if you use a very expensive Chinese brush set. The differences between western style brushes and Chinese brushes are a world apart. Chinese brushes are hand tied and they're made with several different types of animal hair and you can't compare an animal hair brush to a synthetic nylon brush it's just not the same thing. The expression in the stroke with an animal hair brush is absolutely light years ahead of anything you can do with a nylon brush. Chinese brushes typically have between two and three and sometimes four different types of animal hairs to get the very emotional expression and also to get the fine tip as well as the ability to hold an incredible amount of water and pigment.
Chinese paintings or calligraphy usually use a type of paper made from tree bark, bamboo material etc, break into pulps, called Xuen 宣, a city name in Tang dynasty, dated back 1,500 years ago. There are generally treated and non-treated. It also has a preventive of decaying effect though very thin.
