  • Most wrestling games attempt to replicate the professional wrestling experience as closely as possible. From 1989's WWF WrestleMania for the NES right up to WWE 2K22 on modern hardware, they try to represent the televised product as best as the available technology allows. However, for some developers, the bizarre world of cheap shots and chairs to the head just wasn't enough, and they decided to add stranger and stranger ingredients to the mix in order to stand out. This was, usually, a terrible idea, resulting in titles like the oft-discussed and critically panned The Simpsons Wrestling. Here are the 10 Strangest Wrestling Video Games of All Time.

Of everything on the list Def Jam: (Fight for New York) has aged gracefully! The story is well written and the combat system is smooth and deep making it all addictively replayable with all the different types of fighters you can develop as you see fit. It can arguably not only stand toe to toe with other current wrestling games now. But even put them to shame.

As a lifelong wrestling fan and a big Shantae fan, I've always found it so strange that WWF Betrayal was developed by the same people who developed Shantae, as both subjects (WWF & Shantae) are worlds apart and you would never think one would have any sort of relation to the other.
WWF Betrayal was actually the last game WayForward released before they released Shantae and you can see some similarities between the two games, such as both game's HUDs sharing a bit of a resemblance and even Shantae's walk cycle being a slight improvement from the walk cycle in WWF Betrayal.

You missed the absolutely bat**** craziness of Sgt. Slaughter’s Mat Wars for the C64.
In the games main story mode you play as a manager, and get to choose a team of wrestlers to take to the top…but to get there you have to do things like take steroids to increase your stats and bribe opponents managers so they’ll take dives. If you game over, failing to be a successful manager sees your character begging for change outside of a bar.

  • @danbradshaw2223
    @danbradshaw2223 Před 2 lety +10

With Authority was the bomb. The idea of a blend of Magic: The Gathering with wrestling shouldn't work, but it did. The characters had unique abilities relating to their gimmicks...Kurt Angle had his 3 I's which gave him massive buffs if he got them all in play, Benoit could focus on individual body parts, Tazz could mentor for throws, etc. But more notable was the counterplay system. Each move had a category based on position, so the Stunner was "back to opponent". If your opponent had a "behind opponent" move (like a German Suplex) they could counter it...but you could counter the counter with, say, a Snapmare if you have one. So baiting out counters to your finisher was a big part of the game.

If you accept his challenge, you're transported into an arena with a ring where you fight him in a bonus boss fight. You can throw chairs and try and slam him through a table to win.

Def Jam Fight for NY is one of the best wrestling games ever. Celebrity Deathmatch wasn't a bad game either.

You missed one...there is a TEXT-BASED browser game called simply The Wrestling Game...that's been around since the late 2000s(at least) and still being played TO THIS DAY.

Def Jam was and is one of the best video games ever. People still play and host tournaments of that game. Ppl rarely enjoy wwe games with all their glitches

Mdogg20 is also a noteworthy name as longtime indy wrestler Matt Cross, who some might know from Lucha Underground as Son of Havoc.
I wish they'd bring back the old FFNY style Def Jam fighting games. Update the roster and story for all the new names in rap since it's release.
I played Rumble Roses before I got into watching wrestling, so that's how I was introduced to what a Face and Heel were.

I find it odd that, when people talk about strange wrestling games, neither M.U.S.C.L.E./Kinnikuman, nor its MUCH better sequel of sorts in Galactic Wrestling Featuring Ultimate M.U.S.C.L.E., ever gets a mention, let alone the mobile game of WWE Immortals, WWE 2K Battle Grounds, or the old WWF Midway games of Wrestlemania: the Arcade Game and WWF: In Your House.

reason being. hitting people with actual tomb stones as undertaker...
or hand buzzer with dink the clown?
or, slashing people with razors as razor ramone

My other persona nearly got signed to the ICP'S record label. I said no (mainly personal intake issues) but because I didn't know who they were. The second biggest regret of my musical career....
And the first was starting, beat you to it :)
