- 4+20 is finally included on Woodstock complete, the 38 CD set release in summer 2019. Singer-songwriter Stephen Stills on acoustic guitar performs his composition 4 + 20 before the studio recording was released on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Deja Vu. Stephen Stills was live on the Dick Cavett "Woodstock" Show in August 19, 1969, days after David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash played the famed Woodstock music festival.
Deja Vu by CSNY was ranked #148 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. - Hudba
The amount of musical genius of that era is unbelievable when i think about it now.
I think the amount of musical talent is the same. But the people with a talent for marketing reach your ear nowadays.
Oh, yes indeed.
Absolutely true...nevermore an era like that
There is still people with that music and talent ,but the devil's that control everything won't let it be heard .
I don't think I would play this song at mental health institution
The driving force behind CSN. Stills is a national treasure
I dont quite see the existential woe since he's already the guy from stop hey what's that sound. Sorry, I've loved him as a lyricist since 1996, him lamenting the fact that he's just this regular Stepjen Still
One reason I picked up the guitar in 1969 and played for almost 50 years...Steven Stills.
Same. Stills is why I own Martin’s. Lack of talent is entirely on me.
Been 30 Years for me... He was one of my first inspirations...
@@JD_and_TheBanned
Apres Woodstock, CSNY, and the singer-songwriter era guitars were flying out of the music stores. I bought my first Martin D-28 used, good condition for $350. I was off and running. There was a ton of influences to inspire you at that time. Great music being written and played.
Dan Fogelberg was a friend of my roommate at U of I..he came and played for us one night and went on and on about how amazing Steven Stills was
@@downtoearth13
Dan Fogelberg was another great one. I played his song " To the Morning" on my wedding day through the church sound system.
2 minutes 15 seconds of bliss. Stills is in a class alone.
On the Cavett Show.. beautifully sad song and that guitar... THE BEST PART OF THE SONG IS I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO BIG MOUTH OVERRATED DAVID CROSBY ON CAVETT though i guess he was contained on this show
You said it, baby!
Yup. Beautiful
Stills simply the best of all four
That's all I got to say about that.
Nah, equal to Stills with acoustic and vocals were Cat Stevens, Johnny Cash, Donavan, even John Denver. It goes without saying that Bob Dylan ruled them all....
such a haunting song, both in composition and in lyrics, written by someone so young... they don't make em' like this anymore... the man or the music
i agree nice song
Something about 24 back then. Neil Young wrote Old Man at the same age.
Please do look up the artist named Dayne Pack, he is not even 28 yet. This is some serious music. Please please please look him up

Sometimes something that moved you one day will sound unremarkable the next. This number here stood the test of time.
Great tune
Stephen stills was a big guitar influence on joni Mitchells playing,he taught her a lot about guitar.....it shows....another great musician....they both were
I just stumbled onto the video of this entire amazing show which included Jefferson Airplane and Joanie Mitchell and I thought this was by far the best part. Gives me chills.
Could you hook me up with the link to that whole concert?

Same with me...the best years in our lives
This song was originally written for Stephen, David and Graham to sing as a trio but when Stephen came out he just launched into it as his own and quite rightly as he wrote it, one of my❤ all time desert island songs ❤️⭐️👍
When Crosby and Nash heard it, they refused to sing on it for fear of wrecking it.
Yes, he offered it to Nash and Crosby to sing harmony but they declined. Perfect as a solo effort.
The song is about a wish to die. Have you ever listened to the lyrics you brain dead boomer?
Dick Cavett- a great cultural facilitator back in the day!
Did his audience realize they were in the presence of greatness?❤
Thanks to Stephen Stills for teaching me to play guitar 🎸 in open d tuning. Travis picking
Rock on!
David Crosby worships this man look at the love he has for this performance.
quite a talented crowd sitting around Stills - Joni Mitchell next to him, plus Crosby, Cavett, and most of the Jefferson Airplane in the circle.
aka.Mr.French Gives me goose bumps!!
How about Jack Cassidy and Jorma Koukonen!!
You’re not wrong there. But for me Joni is the jewel in the crown👑
Is that Grace Slick on Cavett’s right?
@@danapaul3216 Yup. All of Jefferson Airplane including the late great Marty Balin.
I stayed up and watched this when it was originally broadcast. Hendrix was supposed to be on the show, but they said he was too exhausted. I remember Stills showing Dick Cavett his jeans and boots caked with mud from Woodstock. And I remember this performance all these years later. Magical.
the story behind this appearance was pretty cool, i know joni wasnt reallly allowed to go to woodstock because she had this show to do the next day and she said all the boys went and flew in on a chopper to make it in time. sounds like she regrets not going too
You lived history so lucky was only 8 and couldn’t stay up to watch.
Perfect in every way.
Dude has a great feel and touch on that guitar.
Best version of this!
I agree 100% since I first stumbled across this version it's been my favorite. I'm so happy it's such good quality. Think I've listened to this 100s of times now..
Such an handsome man...
Wow. At 68 yrs old , i have finally realized that the overall sound of stills, nash, crosby, and young. Was still,s!
Not really. If there is “an overall CSNY sound” across every group song no matter who composed it, it was the Crosby/Nash harmony.
@@GordonLF To some extent, you are right. But, to give Stills his due, his voice helped form the CSN sound, and he was a better musician BY FAR than Cros and Graham. And they would be the first ones to tell you. On the first album, Stephen played bass, drums, acoustic guitar and just about ALL the lead riffs. On that album, he got the nickname "Captain Manyhands". The man was a dynamo!
@@papa-ql3xb You are correct. When you listen to C&N album "Whistling down the wire", the classic CSN&Y sound is there, but not their whole talent
I starting thinking about this a while ago and agree with you 100%. Stills was the key ingredient.
Stills is a true beautiful voice with no additives and reverbs, etc. I've loved him and his sound since I was a teenager, and I'm 65. There is no other like him, never will be.
Stephen Stills, a jewel!
A treasure
world heritage
Wonderful song, wonderful people around.
One of the young lions of America's music revolution. As though born for these moments. Look at icons in his circle around him - I recognize David Crosby Joni Mitchell..
Stephen Stills gave us so much great music. Such a skilled singer, songwriter, and hell-of-a guitar player.
So much talent in that room and Stills has them all mesmerized! What an incredible musician/singer/songwriter!
Incredible performance.

One of the best musicians.
~The End
Stephen Still's is a hero of mine. I've been listening to this music since grade school and now I'm 54. Listening to him sing and play this simple song can still make my eyes tear up. A creator of much beauty in art...Stephen Stills will always be one of the greats. CSN was a great choice to join too =)
I'm officially obsessed by this song, I've been learning it all day, playing it again and again all day, slowly getting a little better each time...now its 11pm and I've just listened to it 6 or 7 times of me, and then as a treat Stills! No other tune all day! Ha 😁🤘
That's exactly like my process....a song needs to be learned and nothing else matters until I've got it. "Old Man" was like that for me just a few days ago.
What tuning is he using ?
Been there done that but that was 60 years ago
D tuning?
Heavenly. Perfect. A man and a guitar. More than enough ... when you are Stephen stills.
David Crosby R.I.P
Yeah, that hit me hard too. David was a good guy.
Youth,beautiful youth.
Yes indeed!
That is one hell of a song man! Wow, it never fails to get me
Excellent, Steve Stills is so talented. Love all his work.
What a magical time that was

Beautiful ❤
Stephen Still was the least know from the incredible group, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. All of them were and still are fabulous artists. However, nothing will ever compare to their musical arrangements and vocal harmonies. How lucky was I to see them live so many times... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Maybe the least known, but the real talent in Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With the addition of Neil, it brought another extraordinarily talented person into the band.Crosby and Nash were no slouches in their song writing abilities, played great guitar, and without them the phenomenal and legendary harmonies don't exist, but neither could touch Stills and Young on the guitar.
Hardly…😂
Beautiful song. Lucky I saw CSNY on their final tour. What talent!
Loved all 4 of them
Cool seeing Joni Mitchell and Davic Crosby there diggin the tune!
Ahhhh. Stephen. The sounds of my youth. Thanks, buddy.
Timeless and achingly beautiful
Always thought that this was possibly the most American song. Hope, sadness, despair, self awareness, and hope again all in this song. For those interested, Stephen uses E modal tuning where every string except the second string (still tuned to B) is tuned to E. That said, I note in this version, Stephen is just about tuned 1/2 step down, so it would be E flat (or D sharp) modal tuning where every string is tuned to E flat (or D sharp) and the 2nd string to B flat (or A sharp). Best wishes to all and do something nice to yourself.
So proud when I finally mastered this tune. Absolutely loved this album.
Incredible.
So groovy! When will we ever gather like this, in peace and in love? I digg his poncho.
This era was so cool, man. Swear to God.
Maybe 40 years down the line people will say the same about this era now (DOUBT)
So many musicians present ☮️🎶👍🏼🙌
I love the acoustic version 🖒
Is there any other version? The recording on Deja Vu is solo acoustic. In the 50 years since he wrote the song, I've never seen nor heard any live performance by Stills with augmented accompaniment. Please explain.
Is there a non-acoustic version?
@@jackquarantillo5192 Not that I'm aware of. The studio version on Deja Vu (which I just re-listened to) seems to be different only in its slightly slower tempo, a different melody in the "morning come's to sunrise..." line, and the way that Stephen's voice breaks before "embrace." Oh, and some one else in the thread below noticed that the "...and he wasn't into sellin' door to door" line isn't in this version. I think this performance preceded the recorded version.
Omg. Are you kidding?! This is a beautiful gem.
It really is!

A true voice of the Common Man
put me in a time machine ~
I learned to play this song, by ear, in the wrong key. He is using "Drop D." I learned it in " Open E. " What a talent he has.
Mauro Ardu I learned it in DADDAD tuning. But it sounds so off compared to this performance (I want to play it like Stills did here). Do you know for sure that he is playing in EEEEBe here? If so, I don’t need a CZcams video to teach me that and I’ll just continue playing in that tuning. Thanks!!
@@samzalta1450
Finally, if you think about it, it's the same thing, the same tuning but a tone below. The actual tuning is called Palmer Modal tuning, after Buffalo Springfield bassist, Bruce Palmer, who invented the tuning. The actual tuning is EEEEBE, though you can leave the A-string tuned to A because it isn't used in the song at all.
Mauro Ardu That’s a great point. Yeah, I think a few songs on Deja Vu use that tuning from Stills’s time with BS. I appreciate the help. By the way, after searching through google I found that he used the tuning Eb Eb Eb Eb Bb eb on the dick Cavett show. Sounds about right. Thanks!!
I play it in DADDAD , can play the guitar part well, but working on the softness in my voice, i try and do it like just softly talking. When I'm happy with it I'll put on CZcams
@@samzalta1450 I think he is using DADDAD here no?

You're welcome 😊
Beautiful song, same tuning as Suite Judy Blue Eyes.
I had forgotten about this song. Thanks for this.😁
Love this, I eventually learned to play it!
I wish I had that guitar. I can play that...you all know it's not that hard to play... I love Stills...
Impossible to play this song exactly how Stills plays it.
It's not that easy to play well, like Stephen does, and throw in his voice and incredible timing, and it's damn near perfect. I've played it many times, but nowhere near as good as Stills. Anyone who thinks that it's not that hard to play, still has a lot to learn. Oh, and it's not the guitar, sure it's a top of the line Martin, but it's the player who makes it special.
Mason Proffitt forever! John Michael& Terry Talbot the Lord Yeshua bless you both for touching many lives!
Watching Joni, you can see she is impressed. That’s hard to do
She most likely had a big impact on CSN (lyrically)
Blew me away seeing her sitting there.
@@constancelund5609 didn’t she date 2 of them?
@@noahbullock6696 Yes, Crosby and Nash.
I believe Joni not only recognized great talent, but she also could discern undeveloped talent in musicians who were "unknown". To quote Young, she had "a heart of gold".

Muy bonita música para esta hora de la noche!!🌷🌷🌷🌷
I think this is the day after they played Woodstock. They were guests on the Dick Cavett show.
Stills is still wearing the mud-stained serape he wore when CSN&Y played Woodstock.
Joni missed out because Geffen booked her on Cavett
Right, the festival ended on a Monday morning and they all came to Cavett’s show like that evening or the day after
They were all high as kites
