Some IDI tips for you from an owner of one.
    1. Clean your battery posts if you haven't already (the positive was smoking from high resistance)
    2. Use two batteries to start the truck one isn't enough juice to turn the starter fast enough you won't have starting issues.
    3. If you have a manual activated glow plug system because you deleted the glow plug controller, push the button and hold it for about 10 to 15 seconds max.
    4. Don't use starting fluid on it, it is a good way to hydro lock that motor (you almost did when it shook) and severe damage will result. WD-40 or brake cleaner is much easier on them if you have to, but be stingy with it.
    5. No need to rev the crap out of it at startup by flooring it while doing so. When its cold outside, hold the pedal about halfway and when it starts release it, the cold weather idle (if functioning) will do the rest and then once it reaches a certain temp it will decrease the idle speed to normal.
