  • The outbreak of brazen smash-and-grab robberies and shoplifting is showing no signs of stopping, but some stores are taking extreme measures to stop would-be thieves in their tracks, including Home Depot. Spokesperson Christina Cornell gave Inside Edition an exclusive look at the company's latest crime-fighting technology, including a shopping cart with wheels that lock if you don't pay and bluetooth-activated items.

I regularly saw people push Walmart carts to the bus stop and leave them there, either on the sidewalk or in the ditch. It disgusted me because I knew that some carts were probably later stolen, and the Walmart had to send someone to gather the others. Either way it cost money. It was also theft, and these people apparently had no problem with that. They probably would have a meltdown if wheel locks were implemented.

      1. TURN ON in order to connect to something via Bluetooth 🤦🏾‍♂️
      2. Be connected to an app that would do such verification, which does not exist for any of the power tools purchased at Home Depot. 🤦🏾‍♂️

So what it's not like you had to do something. What's the big deal. You could have simple kept doing your job. Look the other way.

@@84848AR That's the problem now, looking away. It's hard for an honest person to do that and makes you furious. The big retailers started all this mess when they started telling employees to look the other way and firing people for trying to actually stop a thief. Wait until one day you can't even go in a store and will have a designated shopper, no more browsing. This is one eff'd up society we have become.

@@cashonly6117 why is doing your job the problem? You get paid to work retail. Not to be a detective, cop or security guard. If that's the case then apply for those positions. Look the other way, work as what you have been hired to, mind your business and make your money. The problem is not an honest person doing what they have been hired to do. The problem is the system for letting thiefs get away with stealing and having no consequences.

I used to work at Kroger, and I will never forget the time a woman loaded her cart full, and I mean full, stuff was falling out. But she was pushing it towards the exit and the wheels locked up in the lobby. Lmao.

Many years ago there was a store called service merchandise. They would have a single big ticket item on display. If you want to buy one, you would take a ticket to the register, pay for it, and then your item came to you on a conveyor belt.

And I knew employees back then that sold merchandise out of their trunk too.
Probably a reason they don't exist anymore huh? 🤷🏼‍♂️

It takes an hour now for someone to receive an appliance purchased up at the loading area or to find someone trained to mix paint.
Imagine how long it's going to take employees to also get your drill, a bit set, saw, and flashlight from the stockroom.
