No Gay Marriage Here: The Northern Ireland Story | BBC Newsbeat

  • Declan Harvey investigates why Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK to not allow same-sex couples to marry. With the recent 'yes' vote in the Republic of Ireland in favour of gay marriage and many other countries across Europe changing their laws to allow it, why is Northern Ireland different? We meet young gay people who say they're embarrassed and frustrated at their country's lack of progress and hear the strongly held arguments against change from the governing Democratic Unionist Party.

    Don't forget about the tens of thousands of people here who don't support green OR orange and who don't care for religion whatsoever. There are thousands of us and more and more are leaving religion behind every day. We're pulling our hair out having to live under this joke of a government. Equality for all!

It is like atheists demanding to be allowed to undertake mass/communion - the logical question is.....but why do you want to when mass is a religious ceremony and you are not religious? Even when a marriage is conducted outside of any religious building or does not contain any religious symbolism it doesn't change its roots and why it was established.

      Yeah I thought that was fascinating. But then he did make a valid point - other political issues may be seen by many gay people as being at least as important and maybe more so than gay rights. Like for me, I vote Conservative in the UK. Happily, they also support equal rights for gay people, but if they did not, I couldn't bring myself to vote for Labour or one of the other left wing parties, as I'd be disagreeing with them on almost every other issue. I'd far sooner vote UKIP than Labour, Lib Dem or Green, despite their lack of support for gay people. Thankfully, I don't face that choice and I think Cameron is to be hugely applauded for shifting the Tory position on gay rights from either ignoring them or being against them to being active supporters and driving it forward by passing gay marriage. I'm not Cameron's biggest fan in other areas, but that was a great and noble move.

    • @TheEaglestar1
      @TheEaglestar1 Před 9 lety +3

      JordanjamesX To oppose homosexual marriage legislation does not make one a "homophobe".An analogy would be to vote for Irish Nationalism does not make one a bigot.
      To oppose homosexual marriage is to conserve the definition of marriage as being between two people of differing sexualities and differing physical bodies and emotional make-up.This is what marriage is about-to compromise with someone very different from oneself.
      Homosexual marriage is not the same as heterosexual marriage.

    • @JordanjamesX
      @JordanjamesX Před 8 lety +1

      +TheEaglestar1 yes but this party is discriminating against this man who is gay. He seems to feel a cultural tie to the homophobic unionists despite being gay. Even Sinn Fein supports gay marriage. Gay marriage is legal on Ireland by the way.

    • @TheEaglestar1
      @TheEaglestar1 Před 8 lety +2

      JordanjamesX Discriminating against happens all the time in life.You discriminate between your friends and those who are not your friends,your relatives and those who are not your relatives.When you buy something from one shop and not another you discriminate.When you vote for one party or candidate you discriminate.
      When someone marries another person,they are dicriminating against very many people.
      Healthy marriage requires strict discrimination ie one remains faithful to their marriage partner for all of their life.
      Heterosexual marriage is not the same as homosexual partnership and they should not be labelled under the same category.If homosexuals wish to have sexual intercourse,they can do so.If they wish to have civil partnerships they can do so.They have no less civil rights than anyone else.
      Homosexual marriage is NOT a civil rights issue it is a social and political issue.If it was a civil rights issue,the UK Westminster parliament would impose legislation to make it legal in Northern Ireland.Since it is a political and social issue and Northern Ieland has a representative democracy involving devolved power sharing,it is left to the people of Northern Ireland to decide on this political and social issue.
      When you say,"Gay marriage is legal on Ireland by the way" I do know this.I would point out to you that this is irrelevant as the video above is on Northern Ireland where homosexual marriage is NOT legal and also point out to you that the Republic of Ireland is a different state from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Therefore different laws apply to different jurisdictions.

      glen atkinson You'll find gay marriage is not involving of human rights, courtesy of the European Court of Human Rights. The concept of rights is to enforce them against the state. If no right exists, the state is free to legitimately legislate over it. The state should be goverened according to the wishes of the majority. So, if the democratic process of the Assembly determines there should not be gay marriage, that is perfectly legitimate and should be respected. This is a legal positivism argument, but since rights are absent here, this should be the only conclusion one can come to.

      Yes but a man can still donate sperm and a women can still get pregnant and become a mother or serogate through A.I or even just using a turkey baster. Being LGBTQ does not make one sterile. As they can still have kids.
      A lot of heterosexual couples decide not to or can't have children. Therefore is we are restricting marriage or relationships soley to the purpose of producing offspring then laws would/should be placed to take said couples rights away.
      Along with encouraging fertile spouses to leave the other if proven infertile, so that they may find a 'proper' mate.
      And that acts such as oral sex, masturbation, wearing a condom/birth control and anal should be discouraged, as they hinder what is 'natural' and are merely lust based.

      Sex is such a small part of a relationship/marriage.
      People who are against same sex marriage often make it about sex as if it's the only thing important in theirs.
      The main complaint being that the couple can't have children, therefore it's just about lust. Meanwhile they have nothing against sexual acts like oral, masturbation, use of condoms or anal for some heterosexual couples. Nor do they promote or demand divorce or celabisy between straight couples who decide not to or can't have children. I mean, if they aren't going to have offspring, why should they be married or have sex? Even yet if one spouse proves to be infertile should the other not find a new suitable mate, so that they can procreate?
      Unless we agree that sex is just another form of affection which we share with our consenting partner. Helping to create stronger bonds and from a medical standpoint, decrease health risks.

This issue has a lot of nuance in NI -- and until one understands how the political structure works, it isn't possible to really understand the issue. BBC Newsbeat Please pass on to Declan that his sectarian viewpoint that the Roman Catholic Church doesn't need to be consulted on their position yet Protestants do is very narrow minded.
      Also please inform him of the large number of devout Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland who recognise that marriage between a man and a woman is NOT equal to homosexual marriage.How can it be? The whole nature of marriage is of two dissimilar people becoming as one.The nature of a man and woman coming together is radically different from that of a man and a man and a woman and a woman.Perhaps someday the BBC can make a documentary on the large number of former homosexual people who have been able to travel to a place of being happily married heterosexuals with the blessing of their own children.

I am Chair of the Queer Greens which is the LGBTQ caucus of the Green Party in NI and we have been campaigning for years on these issues, attracting support from right across the perceived political divide here. It can be said that these issues are largely #1 in importance for young people in NI, the current political establishment is not representative of young people and is only held in place through sectarian division, but this is changing. We will have marriage equality, and we will have LGBTQ liberation in Northern Ireland, but we need young people to keep making their voices heard and vote for and support parties which accurately represent their views and opinions, otherwise we are destined to an ever increasingly segregated society. Again, brilliant work!

      It's not unfortunate for me at all, Séan. Quite the contrary: unfortunately for You, the south's legalization (nor the rest of the UK's) of gay marriage has no bearing on The North's. The North has decided through its legislature: We will have NO gay marriage. If there IS an inequality between the current civil partnerships and hetrosexual marriage, campaign for that change. @SeanQuinn-IrishMarxist Před 8 lety +1

      *The working class loyalist can be united alongside the middle and upper class moderate unionist when needs be because differences are not drawn between them when it comes to the constitutional question.*
      You're making very little sense. The "constitutional question" is a non-sequitur. Most young people. working class or not, loyalist or not, are generally more supportive of gay marriage. A lot of young people are also indifferent toward identity politics.
      *This is something nationalism will never do: THERE lies your failure in wishing for a united Ireland.*
      I don't think you understand nationalism. Obviously those with no connection to Irish history or identity, will not care about Irish nationalism. But again, you missed the point entirely.
      *It's not unfortunate for me at all, Séan. Quite the contrary: unfortunately for You, the south's legalization (nor the rest of the UK's) of gay marriage has no bearing on The North's.*
      Except that it does. Not legally, that is true. However, the increasingly socially liberal and civic libertarian views of the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, do mirror the views of Northern Ireland. It's just a matter of time at this point. The DUP can't keep vetoing a democratic proposal forever. The majority of people, from both sides of the cultural divide, now support gay marriage, and the DUP know it.
      *The North has decided through its legislature: We will have NO gay marriage.*
      No, the DUP did, by blocking a democratic mandate. If a referendum were held tomorrow (they're shouldn't be, as some rights are just a given, and democracy is not always relevant) you can be sure that gay marriage would be supported by the vast majority of Northern Ireland's population.
      *If there IS an inequality between the current civil partnerships and hetrosexual marriage, campaign for that change. I'll support it.*
      So if there isn't a difference, why not support gay marriage? Christians do not own marriage; a character in old irrelevant fictional book does not define marriage.
      *The change doesn't have to be through this gay marriage farce. Slán agat from a bisexual Irish lad.*
      What change? Way to contradict yourself in space of two sentences. What would it change though? Also, farce? In what way is supporting gay marriage absurd or disorganised?

    • @user-qi5jw2hg1c
      @user-qi5jw2hg1c Před 8 lety

      Seán Quinn The way you dealt with the last point proved to me there is no point in concentrating on each of your neat little GCSE-style responses. Let's just say, I guarantee I've a deeper understanding of Irish nationalism than you'll ever have. I'd be willing to lay bets that you haven't the time of day for even the most moderate Orangeman despite their members in the past being the most ardent of nationalist Irishmen.
      Regarding the constitutional question, it is you who have failed to grasp the point. Unionism can unite as a front when it comes to maintaining the union. Nationalism cannot do that (as in the nationalists parties, just to clarify that for you); they are too different. Left wing Irish Republicans divide themselves from their middle-class Irish nationalists neighbours, driving the latter into supporting a moderate unionism for economic reasons. This is a political reality.
      The legislature is there for a reason. You do not live in an anarchy- what 'young people' go on and on about in politics only proves the point that they should be learning about more important political matters than gay marriage. The petition of concern has a democratic rationale behind it- as do the other mechanisms such as parallel consent. A simple majority vote isn't enough in this country to achieve a democratic consensus. The majority of unionist MLAs have voted against gay marriage. They represent their constituents. If you have not the unionist vote (or part of it) on board, you do NOT have democracy in NI. The NI Act 1998 stipulates this very clearly.
      Onto the last section. I did not contradict myself at all. It is possible to substantively amend the civil partnership legislation to give the same substantive legal rights as those afforded to those in marriage. You talk about 'equality'; this method would give gays marriage rights in all but name. This is very simple Séan and if you still fail to understand what I'm trying to say, you're not open to other ideas.

    1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)
    9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,[a] nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
    Romans 1:24-27 (NKJV)
    24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
    26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.
    27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
    Jude 1:7 (NKJV)
    7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

    if the church dosnt agree there should be a name instead of mariage that allow people of the same sex to live together legally. they should be accepted as long term couples. there are a lot of couples who live together for years and when one dies the other isnt able to claim the others pension how unfair when they have given the same if not more time with their partners as married couples. how fair is that.why are we so narrow minded in n. ireland !!!

    Well fabulous, thank you for putting a negative shake-up on the equality debate. The perspective of this documentary is narrow minded, right up to the closing dialogue! It leaves me wondering, didn't you have the time to find a healthy contrast or cross section of views? Tut tut Mr Harvey...

      S R Docherty Hi, thanks for watching. In what way did you think it was narrow minded? We'd be interested to know which views you felt weren't adequately represented, as we did our very best to hear from every side of the debate. Please let us know.

    • @srdoc1980
      @srdoc1980 Před 9 lety +1

      BBC Newsbeat Well lets see where to begin; the documentary begins with a voice over of negative dialogue which we hear again at 8.24 seeing then the people who have spoke the words. Mr Harvey walks among the other people at the rally but not once does he speak to ANY people at the Equality rally - just slightly illogical in my mind - I was attending the rally and I noticed another journalist specifically pick out of the crowd a man and woman with their two sons who walked 2 feet in front of me. He was curious to know why this rally was important to them. There were MANY people from all walks of life out on Saturday diverse in age, gender, sexuality etc. Why then does Mr Harvey not take the opportunity to engage the crowd. In fact he only uses the rally as back drop, in the closing scene we see him skirt the the edge of the crowd with folded arms. Not to mention his balcony antics, begging the question was Mr Harvey not comfortable, do large crowds intimidate him or is it simply the topic that makes him uncomfortable?
      The composition of the piece has been thrown together like a big mac meal, boke, you use some beautiful camera shots but perhaps something went a miss - with substance - in the edit??
      There is no promotion of positive thought, Mr Harvey doesn't play devils advocate with his questioning, poor Steve is left appearing a little silly regarding his voting loyalty verses his sexuality. However Peter Lynas walks away appearing like an educated, well balanced man [the 'good guy' audience applause please].
      You haven't engaged the audience with openness, you haven't presented all variables in this debate, you reinforce repressed negativity, this is archaic journalism in action. Tut tut Mr Harvey

    The BBC seems to think that the Roman Catholic Church does not exist in Northern Ireland.The BBC's sectarian bigotry seeks to divide along sectarian lines and make this a sectarian political issue.
    The Roman Catholic Church is totally in agreement with the Evangelical Alliance on the issue of conserving the integrity of the definition of marriage.Why does the BBC ignore this?

    Are you even religious? Do you know about your own faith? The God in the OT is complete different from the God we find in the NT. Jesus taught love and acceptance and the NT makes absolutely no reference to same sex couples being abominable. In the OT where same sex couples are referenced it's because it was the man's job to "go forth and multiply" so same sex relations were seen as a waste of sperm basically.
    Non-religious people should not have to live under religious laws and same sex marriage has now passed in the ROI and in the USA and I have not seen your God make ANY objections. The majority of people of Northern Ireland want same sex marriage but the DUP say they will never let it pass. It is only a matter of time before Britain step in, take over, and pass marriage equality law and abolish the anti-abortion law.
    If you want to be with the union then be a part of it and accept same sex marriage. And always remember Jimmy, if you don't agree with same sex marriage then by all means don't marry a man. And if you don't believe in abortion then don't have an abortion.
    Good day!

      The Northern Irish accent is not a British accent because Northern Ireland is not on the island of Britain. It is an Ulster accent. Too, some people in county Tyrone speak with a southern accent; people in county Donegal speak with what seems like a Northern irish accent. They are Ulster accents. Not British.

    while i think this is a good and fair documentary on same sex marriage in NI, it kind of ticked me off that people, and even the presenter, refer to LGBTQIA+ people as "gay people" or "the gays". it's called that for a reason, and leaving it as "gay marriage" erases the identities of bi, pan, ace, poly etc people and makes it a whole "gay or straight" sort of thing. you can say "same sex marriage" or "equality for queer people" as a sort of umbrella term for anyone who isn't cisgendered and heterosexual.

    • @016329

      I disagree. I think the whole LGBT thing sounds completely impersonal and clumsy and so many letters are being added to it, we'll have the whole alphabet soon! We need to either just use "gay" as a catch all term or find some other word for it in my opinion. In a way, we are trying to market the movement and nobody would name a company or other campaign group with a random jumble of letters like that haha!
