  • ★★★ABOUT THIS VIDEO★★★
    Join me as a take you on a tour of my new 2017 Mercedes Airstream Interstate Grand Tour EXT and show you some of it's many features! Not many owner videos exist of the Mercedes Airstream Interstate which I found both disappointing and surprising while researching what type of RV to purchase. Many dealers have videos but they never seem to touch of many of the aspects a real owner would discover while traveling in one. Although I highlight many features of the Mercedes Airstream Interstate Grand Tour EXT in this video, let me know if there is a particular feature you would like to see more of!

    Your video was great!! I don’t know what’s the matter with all these whiners that criticize the RV you bought and the price you paid.
    My husband & I have talked about buying an RV for years, but as we are now in our 70’s there is no way we could deal with one oh those “big rigs”! About a month ago a long time friend visited us. He was driving his Class B (a Coachman I think?). We fell in love with is.
    The next weekend - the COVID situation led us to do something fun. We went to visit a several local RV dealers. It was quickly obvious that Class Bs were not very available because of factory closures from COVID. BUT, one dealer had a 2017 Airstream Interstate 3500 ext just like yours. It had 6,000 miles on it and was in perfect condition!! We after several “rounds” of price negotiations we bought it for $118,000. Brought it home last Friday and have spent many hours sitting in it learning all about it. There is a learning curve!! We are planning on taking out first short trip after Thanksgiving.
    We added a Winegard Connect2 for better internet and after our first trip will be adding Dish Satellite.
    Where did you but the mattress topper ? Did you get 2 twins or a larger queen or king?
    Do you think the new front windshield covers are worth the Monet?
    I noticed your video is from 3 years ago. Do you still have your Airstream?
    Again, thanks so much fo ver detaile and informative video!

      Excellent! I'm glad I was able to help! And no... I did not pay full retail. Most Airstream RV's and travel trailers can be purchased with at least a 20% discount.

      AGREED - Way too long and very slow moving. 56 minutes is just too long for most CZcams videos. Most videos should be a max of 15 minutes; or maybe 20 minutes if interesting. Otherwise break up your video into segments, e.g. Part 1, Part 2, etc.

  • @bobyeager3093

    Your video was very helpfull. We own a 2016 silver interstate with air suspension and an extra closet in the rear drivers side nest to the rest room. Someone ordered it that way with the air suspension and the rear screen. The coach was ordered then the customer canceled so we picked up a deal. So far we love it and just completed a 8500 mile trip to Canada and the east coast of the USA then back to Calif. our home. Gas MPG was a true 18 and I do not drive slow. We have owned three class A and one classic 25' trailer but at 76 years old We wanted something easy to drive and with less hassel when camping. When we travel it is a pain in the butt to unhook chains and hitches in the rain, snow and mud on my old knees. We travel with our cat and yes it is a two person rig. I am 6'3" and fit fine. Your comments were right on as far as the bed. We use a 1 1/2" memory foam and a sleeping bag that is rated at 0 degree rated which is thicker padding gives us about a 3" cushion to help avoid those airstream mistakes. We fold up everything and store above the bed in that large bin. We plan on removing the soap dispenser in the rest room also. The fact that we can park this sprinter almost anywhere is very helpfull to us. Yes we could have purchased a B+ but then we are back to almost 8' wide hard to handle and park. We went thru many toll stations and road barriers that we knew would have barely fit in our other RV's never mind the rear view mirrow I almost lost while driving next to a bus in Fullerton Calif. Yes, the B van is not for everyone but we are fortunate that " Where there is a will their is a way" so we compromize and do the best with what we have. We love the quality and the attention to detail that Airstream and Mercedes put into this Coach. One last comment. The new Ford B+ sprinter style van is very nice but if you order the eco boost V6 twin turbo engine with that heavy vehicle be aware that you will be very lucky to get 12 MPG gasoline motor. I had a 2013 1/2 ton ford crew cab truck with that engine and was lucky to get 14 MPG when the factory claimed 22 MPG. When I pulled my 25' airstream trailer with it I got 10 MPG if I drove slowly. O YES , plenty of power but not good MPG>

      Bob... it's great hearing from another Interstate owner! Thank you for this great information! How do you like the additional closet? You make many great points on why the Interstate is a great choice for ease of use and maneuverability. That's is one of the reasons I was drawn to it.... easy get-up and go!

    What a superb video and true description of an Airstream Class B. I owned a 2016 Grand Tour and traveled for several months in the western US. The Mercedes part of the coach was superb...no issues....the best. Airstream does the most beautiful coaches, period, and many of their features are best in class. Loved the power shades...pull into camp and the sun is out and hot...hit one button and the shades are down, awesome. Just like with the Alcoa rims and safety features...most manufactures charge extra for that, but standard for Airstream. My problems came with things you described....the locks look cute, like in an airline, yet don't lock onto anything in the big drawers. All mine, came crashing out at some point and had to be replaced. The locks simply don't lock onto anything. Unfortunately on the road, I couldn't get Airstream dealers to fix in the near term, and took weeks when I got home, I was not a happy camper. I ended up taping up the drawers while traveling, and the dealer told me to use bungee cords.... but not in a $150,000 dollar unit I thought. Everything else worked well...except my macerator hose reel had to be replaced, inverter failed, etc. and that is all tough when you're on the road and nobody including their dealers want to service in a timely manner. So, take advantage of the 3 year warranty and get it all fixed, period...including those camera seals on the mirrors. Maybe business is so good with Airstream that they're putting these things together without superb quality control in years past, but I sold my unit in late 2016 as I could not handle the service issues. Your description of the bed was awesome....sure big, and huge.....but took me, like you, a lot of work to sleep comfortably. Good luck !!

    We bought our Grand Tour in December, having owned a Coach House Platinum(hydraulic problems they couldn't seem to fix) and two Road Trek 210 Populars. Traded one in after 5 years...big mistake as second one was a lemon. Now have the Airstream. Love your video...learned the microwave locks and where they hide the TV antenna booster. Thanks. Regarding the cab sun/privacy inserts...put the little tabs outside a partially open window and then roll the window up...takes 2 people to do it. I also HATE the front cover and am experimenting with a tension shower rod and curtain for night privacy. At least it can be hidden away.

    it is good to have 2~3inch thickness around window as it works as kind of a insulation.
    when you in the middle of winter season, it will protect heat from inside and cold air from outside. i think your decision was great, whether your initial intention was just a window screen or not.

    This was a great, detailed walk-through that highlighted many things I would otherwise not have known. Thank you for going to all the effort! I am not willing or able to spend $168K for a new one, but am looking at used class B vans. Like you, I really want the look and "city street-ablilty" of a full-size van rather than the width and size of a B+ or C that is arguably more practical for vacations. I recently narrowed my search down to 3 vans, each from different manufacturers. Because of your video here, I have decided on the Interstate GT. Even with the negatives you point out, I think the Interstate GT is the best fit for my needs... mobile office, road trip vehicle and occasional over-nighter, and capable boondocker for a few days. Thanks for mentioning that the air suspension takes up the under-floor storage; I will opt for the 4X4 option because I really want to have that storage space available. Have you looked into the engine ECU upgrades that boost horsepower and torque? I'm sure they impact gas mileage, but they probably would really help drivability in traffic. I have read that you can boost the 6cyl Benz turbo diesel from 188HP to 265HP and get up to about 420lb-ft of torque. And that's just by reprogramming the ECU; no mechanical changes.

    Really nice, thorough review. I never even noticed your "ummms" until I read other comments! Cons: front window privacy covers, bathroom sink, bright reading lights over bed, and the whole bed design is very old school and does not look comfy. Pros: Everything else! And most important, you seem really happy with your purchase, and that's all that counts. With people starving to death every day around the planet, this vehicle is extremely decadent, but wonderful if you can do it. More power to you. Speaking of power, I really like those power window shades, if they prove to be as reliable as standard car power windows. Thanks for posting, and happy, safe travels to you! One more thing. I'll bet you need to follow a checklist just to get everything stowed away and secured when you leave a campsite!

    RV walk-through... best in show lol! Love your candid remarks and the RV for the reasons you do. Does the dealer spend the time to show you how everything works? I would pay good money to have someone teach me every little thing. How long is the van? If you have solar on the roof, why not a ladder? Can you add one later? Is there an optional bicycle rack? Speakers in the back? Automatic hot water at the main sink for coffee? Auto antenna? Fuel type? Where is the spare tire located, easy access for it do you think? Four wheels at the back or two? I'd be interested to know what options you decided not to take if any. Thanks

    Appreciate the owner review and I agree concerning the misapplication of a wet-bath sink. Apparently, manufacturer's believe customers couldn't stomach toothpaste or shaving clippings in their "kitchen" sink, but apparently don't mind intimately wedding their toilets each and every shower.

      @Smedsters  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks Matthew for the comment. I'm glad to hear there are others that agree. Taking a shower around my toilet doesn't bother me in the least. I actually started keeping the toilet seat up to catch excess water to fill the black tank in lieu of the gray tank. I brush my teeth while I take a shower and problem solved... no toothpaste/mouth wash in the galley sink or around the food prep area. I haven't had to shave in the Interstate yet BUT if I did, it would also be in the wet bath. I'd prefer to keep the galley area clean.

    I absolutely agreed to get rid of the sink in shower. Firstly too small you can't use for anything either than washing your hands, does it serve it's purpose, not really.
    Not bad but to some people it might have too many electrical functions, if there's a malfunction you have to send back get it fixed, who knows how much that would cost you. Its fine if you don't have financial concern but the timewise... personally if I choose to live in it full-time I'd rather build one myself to fit my own needs,I think it will save money I can install other things like solar panel and perhaps water filtration system... etc.
    Ps. It's a great full-detail introduction video, it helps for people planning to buy a class B!

    Difficult to justify 168k and having to add a topper to sleep in a sleeping bag comfortably.. I know there isn't such a thing as the perfect RV, but at those prices you do expect more than that and gray foam tape on your side camera mounts.. they make the stuff in black....

    • @Smedsters
      @Smedsters  Před 7 lety +3

      I can live with having to use a memory foam topper. Keep in mind that I did not select the twin bed model and could have very easily avoided the need for a topper and sleeping bag with the twin model that uses actual mattresses. At the end of the day, I will always prefer an actual mattresses! Overall, the Grand Tour plan with rear sofa had the best floorplan for me. The memory foam in the sofa is very soft. The only reason I prefer the topper is to eliminate the creases/spaces of the sofa when it is in the "bed" position. I don't disagree about the black tape. Smedsters, I understand your reasoning and concur. But like you said, the bolsters on the inward facing seats were poorly designed. I'm sure Airstream is just buying these from the manufacturer that provides them to all the customizes of Sprinter RVs. I see your pickiness for design and function and laugh at myself knowing I'd be the same. I was blown away by the non locking button knobs on the drawers and cabinets. While watching your in depth video I literally gasped out loud in awe. I've commissioned a few custom pieces of furniture and know a little about furniture making, those creases and gaps amazed me to the point of writing to you.. great video, I must say that I did not realize it was close to an hour until the end.. well done.

      There is just no excuse for that bed, at that price point there should be no need for a topper. Less expensive rigs like the pleasure way get 5 star ratings on their electric couch/foot stool bed. Aside from the total electric roadtrek e-trek, the is the most expensive mass produced sprinter conversion.

      I have to first state that I am an Interstate Specialist out of AANW-Covington. My job is a little different then most. I'm salary, not commission, and I hope to be apart of this thread as I actually have an Interstate to use and my uncle owns one as well...so I'm a bit well rounded. As you mentioned, the memory foam in the cushions is very soft. Out of 35 Interstate guests I've sold to in the past 6 months, I can only count 7 that use a memory foam topper. I keep in contact with all of my guests. What I've noticed is that is comes down to a persons back sensitivity. It's an unfair argument to say you have to put a topper on the bed because we're all different. The ridges are definitely deceiving though.
      This coach was designed to be a Luxury Touring Coach and an RV at the same time. This is what makes the coach so appealing to people. That and the fact that 65% of our guests were boaters at one point in their lives, so the size and the versatility of the coach makes it that much more appealing. Other manufacturers do a good job with their coaches, however if you place them next to an Interstate and really go over them with a fine tooth comb, the pros will out-weigh the cons.

    I'd like to know about the refilling of the fresh water tank, dumping the grey & black tanks...how much trouble is it? And being frugal with water supply, how often would you need to refill/dump as a couple traveling full time in this unit? What's the cost of refilling/dumping? Are locations fairly convenient for this? How is it done exactly? Aren't you screwed if the macerator, pump thing fails? Everyone shows the comfort items & convenience items etc. but what about the hooking up electrical, or propane connecting etc. at longer stay locations, the dumping etc. These are things that while less attractive, certainly, are important to know about. Found your video informative as far as it went. Cheers.

    Fantastic overview, thank you! Tonneau cargo cover in the back is pronounced "tun-o", emphasis on the "o". Beautiful fit and finish on this van. For us, cons would be the bathroom, for the drawbacks you note, and the absolute no-go for us on this is the non- locking doors and cabinets. In the specs they call them "flush mount & solid shut", so you are correct that they are not broken, but designed that way. I would consider non-locking cabinets to be a safety issue. I would never want to drive this van down the road with anything in the cabinets, knowing they could burst open at any time and distract the driver, damage the interior, or possibly injure a passenger. I would urge you and all of your viewers to write airstream to let them know of this serious flaw with the Interstate.

    Great video! I like the Mercedes chassis and I'm an Airstream fan. I appreciate and look for good quality in what I decide to buy, but even with Mercedes and Airstream, quality is lacking in some areas as you revealed here. The side cameras with the sloppy seal, the none-locking cabinets, none dimming reading lights (which is an easy fix in the $168k rig) and then lastly that tiny awkward wet bath. I'm a slim guy but I have issues with tiny wet baths. I like the compact design of that style of motorhome. With what they're charging for these motorhomes, Airstream should've put more thought into these shortcomings or just plain oversights. A tankless/on demand water heater should be standard. But with all the negatives that you revealed - your Mercedes/Airstream looks to be one of the best in the market for my needs. I'm looking for something to live in most of the year for my nomadic lifestyle with a dog. So that's the reason for my critical look here. Thank you for posting this tour of the Mercedes Airstream Interstate! I'm a new subscriber.

  • @ka1133
    @ka1133 Před 7 lety

    A couple of observations and comments. I agree with you about the sink in the bathroom. Definitely a waste of space. I've never used mine in my 2012 WGO ERA. There is no doubt that Air Stream "looks" more luxurious than the ERA. But functionally they are very similar. I have the 70X model which has the electric folding sofa at the rear as well. The kitchen counter is long in mine and for me I wish it was shorter to give me more space at the front. I removed the two rear captain chairs to make room for a nice comfortable livingroom style chair that sits behind the driver's seat and looks out the side sliding door. Removing the second one just gives me more floor space. Being that my unit is an older unit I don't have the solar package which I will have installed one day soon. I do like the larger refrigerator/freezer on the Airstream as well. I am surprised for the money that your rig doesn't have some of the newer heating systems and hot water systems. I'm thinking the Truma Combi/Alde systems. My 2012 has the Atwood hot water tank and the Suburban furnace ... although tried and true in my opinion (I've never had an issue with either one) ... I would have thought Airstream would have went to the newer systems, especially for the money.
    All in all a nice looking rig and a nice walk through.

I hear they're relatively quite during operation.

Same remote control and all!! I guess the power shade maker has a monopoly on the power shade market! Anyway, awesome Class B...I would love one but just can't justify the $168K price new as in a few years it will be on a used lot still almost new for way under $100K...not knocking you buying new...you wanted perfection and certain options...Hope you enjoy it!!

    Thank You for your interest. Yes! we use the extra cabinet for many items that are large and need to be easy to locate. I can only respond to someone who said why so much money for a class B Airstream Interstate. So my wife said" why does it cost more to buy the diet food rather than the regular food?" I said " Because it is made special and that is what the customer wants, never mind the better Quality". Loosing weight and buying the best always hurts alittle. But if you can not afford the best then settle for what you can afford! Anyway my Interstate is in the dealer presently for a few warranty issues and they are waiting for authorization from the vendors and the factory. Excellent commentary on the price of the Interstate! I was pleasantly surprised to be contacted by an "Airstream Customer Relations" employee out of Jackson Center last week to see how my experience has been with my Interstate. I told her about my burnt out LED reading light and LED issue on my power cord and asked if she could have these sent to me versus me having to wait on the local dealer. She very promptly responded that it wouldn't be a problem to have the items shipped to me and she asked that I ship the damaged items back to her. So far... so good. We'll see how long it takes to get the replacements from Airstream.

    Where did you find your rugs? Is there rubber backing on them?
    Our decision to purchase the Airstream Interstate GT 2016 over the Roadtrek was based on a couple of things. 1. Airstream orders all of their chassis with all of the safety features from MB. 2. We had an open view on the passenger side of the van that is a great visual effect for a small space. 3. My husband is 6.3 and wears a size 11 shoe and there was no wardrobe hanging over his feet :) .......after I purchase, we attended the Hersey PA RV show, took a class on tire safety and found out that Airstream also included a sway bar on the van......made us very happy with our decision!!! Now we are researching to add more solar.

    • @mikesmedley8037
      @mikesmedley8037 Před 7 lety

      2Dreamin thank you for the comments! The rugs were from Target and include a rubber back. They were the best I could find that matched the interior decor of the Grand Tour. Target keeps them in stock in store. I purchased my Grand Tour for all of the same reasons and couldn't be happier. I too am interested in additional solar capabilities and the replacement of the stock house batteries for plug-n-play lithium batteries that utilize the same space. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to lithium but adding solar seems to be an easy no brainer and relatively simple to do.

    • @SlowDownandTurnHere
      @SlowDownandTurnHere Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the info on the rugs, been searching for non rubber backed rugs, very hard to find in an acceptable color to coordinate with the interior.........caution: be careful with the use of rubber backed rugs, the Airstream manual does not recommend them based on the materials of the flooring as it may cause discoloration. The lithium batteries will have to be installed on the inside of the coach (most likely place is in the back beneath/behind the bench seat) due to the fact that they can not be cold started as they are temperature sensitive, you have to heat them up before you can use them; however, they are a great option. But as we found on our last trip out, adding solar is a must have!!!

      We have not added the solar yet!!! Still looking at options, whether to add to existing on top of the van with deciding whether to go flexible or hard panels, pros and cons to both or portable with a quick disconnect added to the van. We are looking at the Zamp solar panels, USA made, good quality. We would like to have that decision made and installed before our next trip out.

    Re. Window screens. Small magnets plus Velcro. I would prefer a more generous cut , about 1.5 inches bigger than the glass. Trouble with some company,s if/when accountants get involved in the design process, that’s why you paid for the outdoor mat , I,d say. Enjoy the Van and when your ready to change find a small independent converter , work with them to design your van.
    The remote control forest, sadly the more hi tech means the more there is to go wrong. If an action can be done well manually, as is the case with pulling down blinds , just heard you love the blinds oh well . You need the 2 to 3 inch wall thickness to achieve insulation. Your opening catches need to be replaced,so they work. Check out the Euro van bathrooms, disappearing toilets , origami walls to creat Sep showers.The bathroom is a surprise for a high cost Van. Enjoy your travels.

    I am very unhappy with manufacturers who choose to solve a design problem in an easy way, which creates discomfort for the buyer. Often it is not apparent just how awkward things are until it's too late. We shouldn't have to remember to do things in a certain order for fear of causing damage.
    I have a bed settee which has the scissor action, similar to yours, and when it's flat I have to search to find the join. It may depend upon your height just where these hard seams will be positioned on your body. Then they justify it by saying that not many people have complained!

    I've had nothing but problems with mine from day one. it's insane that they fit an electric refrigerator in that tiny unit and expected to run off of two small batteries. The solar panels on top are complete joke and basically don't function. I've had to spend thousands of dollars on batteries I finally upgraded to lithium and hope that will work but my latest bill was $3,100 half of which was Labor just to put in three batteries fix my outdoor shower and a few other odds and ends. this vehicle only has nine thousand miles on it and is 1 year old. Constant problems like the step to get in Breaking can't get fixed. the thing gets blown all over the highway and there's a compromise between turning radius at slow speeds and lack of stability on the road at high speed meaning you can never take your hand off the wheel for a second which gets tiring over a long distance. it's almost impossible to ride in the back because of the crashy suspension. This has been addressed with an aftermarket upgrade this year which is going to cost many thousands of dollars. This thing rides like crap make no mistake. it's the slowest thing on the road and can't get out of its own way meaning that you're always driving defensively and people are riding up your ass. depreciation is horrible. I hate mine

    Aren’t there magnets in the window covers so they just stick?

    Question re tire. I found it is very difficult to measure and inflate tires for interstate. How do you maintain proper tire pressure? Do you need special equipment? I asked to my dealer but could not get good answer. Thank you.

    Great video -- thanks for posting. Did I miss the section on your computer desk? I'd be interested in seeing that, as well as the table set up between the two captains chairs.

      There are glimpses of the desk between 6:30 and 16:00. I may have better shots of the desk in some of my other videos so be sure to check those out!

    So is this entire thing for $168K or is that not including the van?

    • @Smedsters

      $168,000 MSRP. Expect at least 20% off at most dealerships.

    Thanks for the review. If I ever purchase this mode, I'll be certain to request Airstream to not install the wire-shower bracket, and please, install a locking mechanism into the drawer and cabinet pulls. Can this Airstream model be equipped w/solar, and inverter ?
    Hymer-Erwin is coming into the USA market, have you had an opportunity to inspect their class- B motorhomes? If so, what is your assessment of their vehicle quality? And, Roadtrek's w/ the eco-trek system?
    Great job reviewing this Airstream. You could earn a living performing that task for all the class-b market. Very thorough, and done with integrity.

      The Interstate is equipped with a 100 watt solar panel on the roof and a 2,000 watt inverter.

    Also try inserting the front screen blind under the mirror before you unfold the sides to full size.

    Nice review......some interesting flaws with the overall attention to detail from Airstream. Really opened my eyes. Thank you.

      Thanks Rick! Overall, I'm happy with the Interstate but agree that for the amount Airstream charges, the Interstate should be nearly flawless.

    The knob problem is because there are no L brackets on the inside of your cabinets for the catch to latch onto.

    That's a lot of details you're pointing out there but apparently there's not even enough space in there for a Chihuahua since he's running around in circles. Lol jk have to say I'm jealous of your nice home enjoy.

    Thank you for your detailed tour of your motorhome. We are looking into purchasing a 4x4 as we want to boondock more than go to RV sites. My question concerns the solar panel. The rig comes with one. If one wants to go off the grid for any amount of time, would it be necessary to have more than one panel?
    Also, you mentioned Apple TV. Do you use that to stream from your devices to the tvs?
    Looking forward to more of your V-logs. As others have mentioned, it's refreshing to hear from an owner vs dealer when it comes to the rig.

    • @Tatiacha
      @Tatiacha Před 7 lety

      Yes, the single panel is only 100 watts most sprinters can handle 3 the extended maybe 4, you need as many as will fit for boondocking as they 300-400 is really as low as you can adequately go for boondocking. the other issue though for boondocking is having enough batteries and it is a struggle in the vans to find a place for additional batteries.
