  • Time to go on a journey… through time! I lived in 1952 for a week to see what it’s like to have no internet, and not even any books or music from after 1952. Come with me to the days of radio to find the beauty that lies in every era!

    They didn't make their beds as soon as they woke up they let it air out, I believe they idea was to let it air out so it reduces the amount of moisture that retains in your bedding and mattress which can reduce dust mites an hour should due but if you live in a more humid place above 30-50% your should leave it for a few hours I hope this helps. This also helps with allergies

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Před rokem +5

      Right! I actually knew that, I just totally forgot. I’ve heard that some people did that, but I’m not sure if it was an everyone thing. If you had to leave home to work soon after you woke up, perhaps you’d make it right away. Idk. I’d definitely like to look into that practice more. And fortunately, I don’t have allergies, so that’s not an issue for me.

    This is a very late comment but I just went down a rabbit hole of these videos, and only just now found it, so indulge me. :D
    My great grandmother used to do laundry outside over an open flame in a metal tub of very slow to heat hot water. She would stir and agitate it with a whittled and sanded down stick, like a badass Appalachian witch stirring her cauldron of cleanliness. It usually took roughly 4 to 5 hours. Bless her.

    I used to borrow a similar alarm clock whenever I was staying with my grandparents! It might have belonged to my dad, since it usually stays in his old room.
    It must be wound and corrected every evening, making sure to add an extra ten minutes, as that will be lost during the night. The alarm also need winding, so one could chose if one wantes a light alarm or an angry alarm.
    The clock is still there, I think my brother still use it whenever he is there.

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Před 2 lety

      Interesting... I wonder if it stayed correct longer when it was new or if it’s always been just a little off. I managed to change the time of the silver clock but it would wind up being wrong again before long. Plus it was a big pain to correct since the winding key was missing. I had to take the back off and wind it with pliers to change the time 😆. Definitely a little more effort than I would like.

    • @silver5515
      @silver5515 Před 2 lety +1

      @@MirandaMilner It did stay correct longer when new, at least through the night. They had to correct it once in a while, since it did go a bit slower when it soon needed to be wound up again. If one forgot to wind the clock it would stop in the middle of the night, as was the nature of such clocks.
      The spring is probably eighter worn or slightly corroded, or maybe some screw isn't as thight as it should be. It hasn't had the best time the last decades, sitting alone on a shelf most of the time. I also think every child in the family at some point has wound it roughly, without respecting its age. Poor clock.

    i’m back watching this video again LOL but i have a question! how did you listen to the 40s radio station exactly? did you have to use bluetooth to listen to it from your radio? or did you just use your laptop? i love the idea of listening to the vintage radio but i also am trying to do it without using modern technology

    • @MirandaMilner
      @MirandaMilner  Před 2 lety +2

      For this week, I used the vintage radio station in the description, and Bluetooth connected it to my speakers from my computer. Then I set my computer so it wouldn’t fall asleep and turned the brightness all the way off. That way my computer was always playing, but just had a black screen. I’d could just turn my radio volume off when I didn’t want to listen to the music. It did stop working after a day or two, so I had to press play on the music again, but that’s about it. The problem with this is that sadly, it’s very bad for your computer or phone battery, so you shouldn’t do it very often. The best way is to just use Bluetooth when you want to play the music, and don’t leave the program on when you’re not using it. I hope that helps!

    I’m not too familiar with Canadian history from 1952, but here in America, at least on the national level, things could and did get ugly very fast.
    There was the House Un-American Activities Committee that was responsible for the Communism furor and the firings of many whom they suspected of Communism-Senator Joseph McCarthy led that uphill charge.
    In a more local note, unless you has a Cadillac or an Oldsmobile or Pontiac, or a newer Ford or Chevrolet, or if you could bum rides, you had to know how to drive a car with a standard transmission-or “stick shift.”
    Electric typewriters were seen in larger big city offices, but electric typing was years off from smaller towns and smaller businesses. They were available but their expense was prohibitive.
    Women barely had rights on their own, which made it essentially a necessity for her to marry by at least 25.
    And the prickliest item: Abortions were still criminal affairs until at least 1973 with the landmark Roe vs Wade case.
