    Ok Gary. As a Teacher in High School - You are absolutely correct! The system is broken and needs revamped. It's hard for me to sit in meetings and listen to the same "strategies" we were doing 10 years ago. They did not work then and they do no work now!

      Julie Gayheart I think he is correct. Some people say "if we don't make them memorize then they will not know cus they will never search it up" but the thing is what each kid wants to do will do what he wants to do. If he wants to be a president he will search shit like that up. If he is interested in sports he will search stuff about sports and can check news on social medias. School system is broken and it needs to be changed.

    I strongly agree. The system is so messed up that most of the students find that all the time they have wasted to memorize everything is a complete waste of time. It is fact. Why should i waste 2 hours of my time learning geography when i can have all that data with a swap on my smart phone? I think the goal hear is to prepare our young generation on how to effectively use their resources rather then making a walking encyclopedia. Well said GaryV.

    There is a reason why I'm currently successful at my job.....zero college degree, zero traditional learning model I learned my job from working from the ground up and finding info on my own. I learned how to be one of the top programmers in my company and also learned how to be a great photographer in my own company by evolving in the business model method of learning he is mentioning. My company is full of "google search bar engineers". I am one of the least micromanaged employees in my company because I perform and don't rest on the laurels of that over priced framed cert on my wall.

    Build students' self-esteem, spot on advice. Way before we shared a stage performing a two-man show I was Mike's junior high one-on-one classroom assistant. It was so frustrating when teachers brought Mike down because they couldn't get past his wheelchair. I made it my mission to help them see Mike's incredible intellect and vast possibilities.

    • @ShadowsMasquerade
      @ShadowsMasquerade Před 7 lety +2

      Agreed. One obstacle that makes building self esteem so hard in the school system is that it does not cater to the individual and it does not care what each person's strengths are, so they barely have time to develop them. It's a one-size-fits-all-let's-gradate-as-many-people-as-possible solution to a much deeper societal problem.

    Gary, I'm just gonna go straight to the point.
    I live in Cambodia, currently in grade 9th. I love making videos. I can sit 24 hours making video and also watching videos from youtube.
    First of all, The school system here is so terrible, not only they tell us to memorize shits. Everything about it, is terrible. Teachers got paid for 150$/month (super low) My physic's teacher know nothing beside the questions in the book. Also, i have to copy 4000 words every single day from my textbook (it is literally rewriting my textbook onto my notebooks), I believe that, that has no single value. I asked my teachers and the teachers told me, that is to practice my handwriting, and if I ever lose my textbook, i have my notebook. " LIKE WTF ??
    Also, I can spend 1$ for each subject and get great score for the month. I really hate the system but the country is so under-development.
    I truly believe in myself at what i do. While i can wait till my highschool is finish but i really dont want to. I want to be successful as fast as i can and accomplish my parents dream while they still have the energy to use them. This is my biggest goal in life.

    College is no different, is it? Even my Genetics professor has similar views as shown here. The whole "Walking Encyclopedia" thing is obsolete. It means nothing anymore. It's a matter of what we can DO. NOT a matter of memorization. I learned more from my previous job at Wal-Mart in the three years (2016-2019) than I learned in school.
    I try to learn the facts of numerous thing on MY OWN TIME, because that is for ME. Not my job. You know?

    And I try to explain this to my mother or my parents friends and they all think Im a bum. Im like, just give me a year and Ill fucking show you (already 4 months out of college and accomplishing my goals, absorbing updated content and learning to adapt in this everchanging world).
    The truth is that by the time people finish their first year in college,the whole industry has been reinvented and they blindly follow through the next 3 years of useless, outdated content. It takes so much time to restructure school that you are most likely learning things you will hardly apply later on. Modern institutes and online education are much different and likely to provide relevant information. But traditional schools are so rigid I dont see them changing anytime soon at least here in argentina

    It’s such a big problem.
    Some of these ADHD kids are actually really smart kids who realize that a lot of what they’re memorizing is worthless in the sense that they can’t use it to create value for themselves.
    These kids are not inspired to memorize and regurgitate facts because they just don’t see the point, they end up with poor grades or even worse forget school all together.
    There needs to be more of an emphasis on teaching kids the application of the information they’re acquiring so that they develop a quick and real understanding of how education adds value to their lives.

    If one does not hold vast tracts of information in one's head all at once, one cannot find the connections and draw the conclusions that such a vast wealth of knowledge affords. Only being able to look up a few names and dates will not make one intelligent or effective. Human beings cannot use their reason in a vacuum. They must reason from propositions, and the more points of contact one has with the world around them, the greater the power of deduction.
    There is a strange irony in criticizing learned knowledge. Those who have attained to such a degree of knowledge understand its power and would not criticize it; those who criticize are the one's who cannot see -- they criticize what they cannot understand, they criticize because they do not understand.

    This is why I fucking hate Google. We are in a day of age where the school system is complete bullshit and everything you can ever know, you can ever think of, you can Google it. It sickens me because people today are now even too lazy to think about something that they can just Google "is the sky blue?" and they get a bunch of answers. While I do admit information smart is yesterday's news, I wish people would actually think for themselves instead of having to do a Google search.

    • @DinoCorvino
      @DinoCorvino Před 10 lety

      I did watch the whole video. The idea that someone with know educational training, no educational administrative experience or training is going to spout off and tell us what should be done is absurd. I do not know anything about say, lawn care. But, I think I should be heard as an expert on the maintenance of the greens at Augusta. Just because you are passionate about a topic, or in Garys case, life in general, does not mean you are right. In this case, Gary is wrong. Just because he has a microphone, and an audience, does not mean he should answer questions about topics he is not an expert at.

    • @PaulHobus
      @PaulHobus Před 10 lety

      What do you think he is wrong about?

    • @DinoCorvino
      @DinoCorvino Před 10 lety

      The idea that we should pay teachers based on some sort of capatialist model is absurd. That we should treat K-12 schools like business schools is absurd as well. Further, he lacks expertise to be seen as an expert. In this regard, Gary is just another guy in the bar talking smart about whatever is on television. Experts are experts for a reason.
