Part 2 available early on my patreon right now - / uavfutures COME celebrate video number 1000 with me.
want more FPV action. Check out this insane drone you can fly for cheap right now • STILL CANT BELIEVE THI... - Věda a technologie
THIS IS VIDEO 1000 and one of the funnest videos I have ever pout together. Thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey over the last 10 years. I really hope you enjoy this. What year did you fly your first real drone in??
2015
what drone and firmware was it on?@@dutchuniverse
End of 18
I still have some PCBs for the Wii Motion Plus Board + Arduino 😂
First Frame was diy aluminium, later F450 clone.... 🙈
FW was MultiWii.
@@UAVfutures Armattan Morphite 180 on an early version of Cleanflight 🙂
I was there with the multiWii too... went thru baseflight, cleanflight and then betaflight and the cc3d boards
using betaflight now?
@@UAVfutures Betaflight and Inav... both are forks of the original cleanflight tho.
I also recently got a vtol plane with ardupilot and immediately crashed it It did not help my mental health any at all to do that
I love these old day stories.
when did you start flying?
Very nostalgic thanks😊
Great video for your 1000th Stew - thanks for all you;ve done getting people into the hobby and upo and flying.
my pleasure friend. thanks for watching. basically 10 years of doing drones. time has gone quick
Very informative!👍👍
LETS GOOOO! 🎉 UAV FUTURES MEET UP, when is it happening Stu?
You in QLD aus?
@@UAVfutures Gold Coast but O/S atm.
Big Thumbs up, and never a truer word said, i lived it to, keep up the great work, cant wait for part 2
very soon on my channel my friend.
Wow. Best non review video that you have made so far imo.. got me real excited for part two!!
Excellent "How it when down" video Stu. Love the the various cuts and editing that went into this, definitely next level! And 'one more thing' ... thee's Part Deux. ♥😎👍👍
i dont klnow what that is.... and google isnt helping?
2012...KK2 controller - 12" quad tube frame, 2826/2200kv w/10" props & heli landing gear. Eventually I got a Walkera UFO canopy to cover the monsters brain.
wild those things even flew right?
Exciting stuff
Congrats on 200k subs. i loved video 1000! been watching since the first 99 dollars drone video!
thats a few years ago now lol
Congratulations on your 1000th video Stu!
Great fun way to share the history of how we got to where we are today.
Whilst I no longer have any MultiWii, or Baseflight drones, like driving a classic car, I still get out & fly my OG BlackOut Mini-H for old times sake.
a man of classical taste I see.
It's about time for a livestream. I can't wait.
cant wait for people to see this one.
Amen
so that's why it's called the multiwii. I was thinking is there any sort of connection, turns out I forgot about it having imu inside. Never had one, never experienced one lol
What year did you start?
@@UAVfutures Built my first drone over during the pandemic. Where i'm from, the wii isn't a household name. The playstations are much more popular.
This video Is sooo good man, even If sometimes you struggle with the green screen, It's so well put that we forget about It !
thanks brother, yeah the green screen was just a bit of fun.
@@UAVfutures You welcome!
Legend. Just like this channel. 👍🏻 great vid bro. ⚡️
Cheers fpv brother.
Wow, I had no idea about any of this. It kind of helps to explain how FPV drones got to the state they are now, still being as comparatively open as they are when the trend for everything else is to become locked down and proprietary.
There's one thing I want to add, the very early days when people were basically first inventing quadcopters, they used helicopter gyros. I saw people posting pictures and reports of this on some RC forum back in the day.
Now you can get different kinds of fixed wing RC airplane autopilots and flight stabilizers, but back then the easiest way to get an rc ready gyro was to get one of the ones meant to stabilize the yaw axis of RC helicopters. Their whole design was to try to hold the yaw access steady. I don't remember exactly how they wired them up now, but they used pairs of them to stabilize the x and y axis of those early home built quadcopters.
I don't know if they even had a way to control yaw with those things. The reports I read were just about trying to make them stable.
I must have been well and truly out of the loop by the time people started using gyros from wiimotes.
I haven't done exhaustive research into this so I'm not certain about it, but what I am certain of is that the first mention of a quadcopter style aircraft that I encountered what's on that RC forum. As far as I've been able to tell hobbyist RC pilots invented the entire electric multirotor concept that has become so influential today. And I've got to say, given the way governments around the world are trying to push them out of the air through onerous drone regulations designed to favor big business, I don't think they get enough credit for that. If it wasn't for the same people they're trying to push out of the air the concept wouldn't exist and nobody would care about that extremely low altitude airspace.
We made that. Not Amazon, not zipline. It was only once those pioneering FPV pilots got the attention of the world that big business except their sights on it and the drone gold rush started.
thanks so much for this info. really appreciate it. im always keen to learn more about it. what year did you start ?
Stew-a-roo-roo, You never cease to impress. I am digging the creativity and shout outs in this vid. Thanks to all those home improvement gurus of our early TV watching years.
All we need now is a hearty Tim-The-Tool Man Grunt and we're Golden. Lmfao. Thanks for the History lesson bro.
ha. my dad didnt let me watch home improvment for some reason. I think it bugged him lol. but anyways cheers. it was fun to make and film.
For those of us fairly new to the hobby this was soooooo good to understand where this all came from
Hype!! 🎉
you know you've been around long enough to know what this video is about just from the thumbnail 😅
we are old indeed my friend.
I like this style of video! Do it again!!
Stew! Please find your guard and whack it back on your grinder. 🙃
Great video as always mate. 👌👌
Great job! Cant wait till part 2!
hit the bell, part 2 super soon
Man this was amazing! I was hoping somebody would do a small documentary of how FPV quadcopters started off. I started in 2020 but Im fascinated by history. Excellent job Stu! Thanks for this and your hard work!🍺🍺😀👍
So i was right on the Wii smashing picture!?😂 Looking forward to the video!😁
ya... poor wii
Dji had flight controllers at that time...
But rtf drones?
@@UAVfutures no just the flight controller and build kit. I had it. It was dji naza
Great video! Still I can't wait for part 2!
hit the bell, will be out very very soon
Oh man, cool video, loved it!
This video was fantastic. I didnt know thats where it alp started but it makes so much sense. Thanks stu!
This is really good. I never heard the background of FPV even tho Ive been doing this on and off for years.
Thanks for helping me navigate the goodbad old days, Stu. Congrats on 1000 videos-can’t wait for more!
thanks for being here my friend. happy to have you as part of fpv
love the history of this can't wait for part two!
Dropping very very soon my friend. thanks for watching
Did you forget about kk multicopter? Only gyros and pid tuning via on board pots. I got two of those flight controllers. Rolf Bakke should be mentioned.
I didnt, but I feel like this could be their own videos entirely. I feel so old now remembering all these old tech things lol
Lol i just love how there is no saftyguard on that ankelgribder safty first all timer😂😂
Nice whit a bit of history thx for the education stu..
And grats on vid 1000🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
o yeah, I took that sh#t off ages ago, I did ear eye protection though. awesome to hear from you rbo.
the sledgehammer got grinning Stu ;) hehe may i ask why you upload in 50hz and not the 60hz standard?
do I? I just select the 4k youtube preset on prem pro, is that normal?
I remember 2005-2006 where Silverlit X-UFO was one of the first quads using a mechanical gyro and 8” props. 2007 a german group of techies developed Mikrokopter out of aluminium profiles and self developed i2c based ESCs. Only 10” and 12” props were available in both directions, CW and CCW
crazy times indeed. what did you start on?
@@UAVfutures this silverlit toy, then a mikrokopter and then 8 years nothing until i saw nurkfpv and whar can be done using acro mode. Left 2 drones on 30m tall trees and one in some bushes since then.
And then i found bardwell and then a young teacher in sunny hot australia where alle the snakes want to kill you 😜
Thank you so much. I love all your video content. I've been flying since 2019 and I had no idea the roots of this hobby came from the humble beginnings of a few visionaries. This really needs to be made into a documentary. I wish I could see the rest but I'm not a member of your Patreon.
part 2 will be out soon, or if you ever feel like helping out even just for $ 1 a month it really does make a difference. regardless man, I just want to say thanks for watching and commenting. really appreciate it.
Great video.
Retro! Harvesting gyros on heli yaw controllers on KK controller for a snap together plywood frame.
Yeah that is something that many don't know anymore. Followed the whole development of flight controllers since the beginning until it got more pracical but it was quite amazing for the time to even have an active flight controller at all.
I knew you name was familiar. you still making music bro?
@@UAVfuturesYes i built a new 64 drive system for events recently but am mostly concentrating on developing the OpenFFBoard simracing system. Still also got some fpv stuff but haven't kept up in some time so its quite outdated as i rarely get to fly.
amazing video; loved it!
thank you
love these videos! make more
ok. but only because you told me to.
all the PPE, no guard lol
This is easily the best video youve ever done, big congrats dude.
While i wasnt around in the wiimote hacking and baby monitor dismemberment, its still fascinating to see where the hobby started.
And now you look at that video of a drone racing an f1 car, all of that was because of a bunch of dedicated people passionate about the hobby.
shh you. you dont have time to comment. you got to be flying to become the worlds best pilot. killing it lately man, well done.
@UAVfutures ah dude thank you I really appreciate it! But I'll always take time out to check your videos.
And it's just because I've found new ways to engage myself in the hobby, along with meeting new fantastic people in the community. I'm trying not to restrict myself to "one thing". So the way I see it going to IRL and online races, joining discord and listening to people, and even just watching videos. They all lead to transferable skills which are heavily important in the hobby.
I have a box with a bunch of naze32 and ccd flight controllers from the beginning days
what you fly nowdays.
@@UAVfutures if you asking about FC's I use matec and speedybee in my wings and for my quads I would say that if a stack costs less than $100 I probably own it but most of my build have speedy bee stacks in them due to the price... I also forgot to mention in my first comment that my box from the past also has some old APM 2.8 FC's from 10 years ago that could do some amazing things including autonomous Flight
i bought a second hand kit with goggles, transmitter, fc and frame all the motors and escs off ebay for like 300 bucks, it was a bargain until i dug deeper but i learnt a lot from it. this would've been late 2017 early 2018. i got that fucking thing in the air all together for maybe 30 seconds. it came with a KK2.1.5 fc and that was soooo interesting and wack.
i would've subbed to you as soon as i made the order i reckon.
i bought a heap of new stuff, screwed up some soldering and shelved it, moved away and just got my hands back on it. i'm keen to try get a new build on.
I always appreciated your sense of humor and opinions
I got into a lot of fpv tubers and I'm veerrryyyy excited for the next episode
Ouch... what you building now?
This is phenom!
for your viewing pleasure
I love this! I started right when cc3d came out
how much did it cost you back then. I think mine was like $50usd for a cc3d the first time.
@@UAVfutures not sure,it was a lit from hobbyking woth motors and a pdb lol
@@UAVfutures i actually still have it lol
this was great!
glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved this video, dude. I can tell you liked making it too, which is the most important thing. It's been draining my soul making content lately, so I'm just going back to making stuff I like😎
Also, it was awesome to hear TimeCop mentioned again lol. I definitely appreciate everything that guy did for the drone community and I remember seeing him trolling other devs/contributors on the forums; and as a young man, thinking it was the funniest thing ever. I'm also very grateful for everyone that put aside those troll comments and pushed for the innovation we have today. Excited for part 2, brother 🤙
Cheers chad. thanks for all you do for FPV. great to see you here. love your FPV dog suit BTW.
@@UAVfutures Appreciate you brother too brother. Have a great weekend!!
lets co lab some time@@ChaddRainsFPV
@@UAVfutures I’m actually talking with Toms Petersons about some work you’re doing with DIYFPV. They invited the shop I work for (ProgressiveRC) to join their project.
I’ve got a product I’m releasing myself called the O3 Armer (makes for an easy build with FPV RC Cars or fixed wing using the O3 Air unit). I’ve got some already going to AU and NZ. It seems FPv RC cars might finally catch on now that we can get insane range with them (plus the regulations on anything that flies).
I’m happy to send a few of them your way with no expectations on video release date 🤙 Can I find your email in your description?
Timecop came back from the future to create Baseflight
wonder if the name came from the movies?
Great stuff.
My pleasure.
Nothing on OpenPilot or any of it's drama? Or all the CC3D and Evolution clones/derivatives?
yeah, this video spiralled pretty quick, first it was just a betaflight history... then i went to cleanflight and there just ened being too much I had to leave some out sorry.
Love the history lesson!
ready for the quizz now?
Sick!
in a good way right...right???
Indubitably!
Ayee, I started with the wii as well and then kk
I wish i could have fitted more in about the kk boards. did you fly them?
How crazy. I just dusted my Wii off 3 weeks ago and home brewed it 😅I love it
I remember doing this. I was so scared of bricking it. no idea how it goes now days with modern hacks? any tips
@@UAVfutures It’s even easier now. There is a CZcams channel by the name of Funkyscott47 and he has detailed tutorials.
Usbloader gx can now load from SD card. You can home brew directly from the Wii as long as you have an internet connection.
If you back up your Wii and put the file onto your computer or flash drive- bricking won’t be an issue 👍
It’s a lot of fun and kind of nostalgic because I have the n64, game boy advance, even PlayStation 1 applications 😬😬😬🤪
The F1 didn't come out until 2012.
People were flying FPV around on my multispawning highly modded FPS gunship server all the way back starting in 2008 up until 2014 when GameSpy login servers went offline. They called it FPV because it started on an FPS game server... that's why it's not called RC... because it did not start in the RC community. RC plane and helicopter guys call their hobby RC. We were in a totally different future... a dysutopian 2142 future... an Oblivion (the movie) future.
It was inevitable people would strap weapons onto them, because they started out with bombs, rockets, guided missles, and guns on them. In fact, I was the first to add bombs to them, because the stock game had no bombs off the air transports... they had flares... which I switched up and gerryrigged into bombs instead by modding the code. Whole lot of bounce, they were a blast.
By 2015 when you got into it FPV quadcopters were already pretty well established, and drones certainly were. RC drones have been around since the 1950's... and NASA was strapping cameras on their payload rockets, lunar landers, and moon buggies back in the 1960's Apollo program.
I started getting into drones at this time 😭😭❤❤ the good days
what year?
My cleanflight armattan chameleon with emax 2205 motors is still running lol
What FC is in it. man what a frame though.

I tried doing this, not even in FPV. I never got the damn thing to stop just flipping over.
with a Wii board?
Oh man, I enjoyed the trip down memory lane as I was along in the beginning! But man I gotta say I'm not on board with the editing style of the standing to bent over view and back..lol please no more of that.
great feed back, thanks. It just helps me have a bit more fun in the vid and sometimes break the scene up. youtube retention is something I am working on. I really want to get this channel pumping again and I guess its one of the tings that helps in this age of tic tok brain.
@@UAVfutures I don't blame you, I just really don't like it myself. Probably part of why I don't use TikTok lol. Either way I'd love to see you humming along again!
I was today years old when I learned why multiwii is called multiwii. Origato, Nintendo San.
