Retired Ippo is scary strong, his spar with Volg just shows how strong he still is. So if he starts training again, he’ll be a problem.

I think a better ending would be Hyriko(his mom) and Kumi(his girlfriend) getting hit by a drunk driver while out shopping, sending Ippo into his mentally weakest state. And end the serie with a cliff hanger, where Ippo finally decides to get back into the ring find the strength he's always wanted.
