Why People Hate Batman Fans

  • Batman fans often get a very bad reputation. Today, I'm going to be talking about why that is and why so many people really dislike the character and his fans. Whether it be with superhero movies or just normal comic books, Batman fans are often taking a beating in terms of public opinion. Even though this character is so popular, with successful games like Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham City, Batman Arkham Knight, Batman Arkham Origins and more, and also many successful films like The Dark Knight, The Batman and more, the character still is often seen as overrated or frustrating by other fans. #batman #batmanarkham #superhero

Nice vid! I like how flash has a built-in prep time called super speed thinking. I agree with your point and I think it all comes down to writing. It’s who they write and how compelling it is. A story of green lantern walking through a mall could be super boring on paper but it could be the most well written comic ever.

As a Batman fan, it does annoy me that most of the fandom's argument for Batman to be unbeatable is that old, tired meme that I'm fairly certain derived originally from Chuck Norris memes and that was "Because he's Batman" smh. No matter how much I love Batman, he can be beaten. He's admitted that if Superman got serious, he'd be put 6 ft. under ten times over. He's human, and just like any human, he has limitations.

_"People only want Batman."_ It's not true. You know iit's not true, I know it's not true. ANY of the Justice League could've had their own games, and people would've flocked to it if it's well made and treated the characters with respect. But here's the thing: even if it were true, there's nothing wrong with it. And it's the job of a comics company, or a video game company, or a film team, to MAKE people care about them. Before the Arkham series, people loved Batman, but I remember all of us being like, 'Why is the first NES game the only passable Batman game we've ever gotten?" Rocksteady changed that.

It's honestly unfortunate that instead of building these characters up when they have chances to, the leads at the top always play it safe and jump out of the way of any risk. It's why a lot of characters don't get the building blocks they need to succeed on a bigger level. I'm hoping that is going to change in the future, but who knows. It's just sad. I can see the frustration of feeling like other stuff isn't selling as well, but it needs marketing and more time to do so imo. They don't want to give it those things.

@@DegenerateJay That seems like 2024 America in a nutshell: want all the money and the characters to be making money, but no one wants to put in the work to make them loved, loveable. HOW did we get to a point where SUPERMAN is considered a risk but the Suicide Squad isn't?!
Green Arrow on Smallville and then his own series for most of the '10s, and NOTHING game-wise except for fighting games. I can't imagine that it would be too hard to make a game for him, and could probably play just like a Batman game.
Green Lantern had the movie tie-in, and I'll be honest: while I haven't gone back to play it since I beat it on its release, I didn't hate that game. It wasn't a terrible little God of War-clone that did about as well as anyone could expect with a power set like that. (Though...imagine a GL game where you get to design your own imaginative attacks and shields, like WWE Create-a-Wrestler style. Need a missle-like attack? Draw your missle-like object in this box...Need a shield bubble? Sphere? Cube? Pyramid? Create your own design! Especially if it released for a system with stylus options, or Skyward Sword-like conrols.)
Never been a Flash game (lolz...you know what I mean). Not one. Put him with Hawkman and/or Martian Manhunter for a game. Or the Question. Or Constantine.
The greater the risk, the greater the reward, publishers. Can you imagine what's going to happen if the Wonder Woman game sucks, though?

    • @Tobiasagain
      @Tobiasagain Před 5 měsíci +1

Im no game writer or designer but I can understand why it would be hard to make a flash or Superman game. Unless they butcher these characters powers with tropes like the suicide squad, fans will complain if they feel the character is weaker than what they are. Superman is practically invincible to everything except kryptonite or any character that scales to him physically while flash is faster than fast & making him remotely slow to fit the games design while make fans cry and complain. Now how we haven’t had a green arrow game especially during the CW tv show is beyond me as & a green lantern game definitely seems possible if everything is taken place in space. There is a supposed Wonder Woman game that’ll come out so hopefully if that does good enough it gives us hope on the other JL members

    • @Goldnfoxx
      @Goldnfoxx Před 5 měsíci +1

@@Tobiasagain If Bruce Timm can take some liberties limiting Superman's strength and things like his ability to breathe in space, I think people would be accepting of some limitations. But I mean, if you really wanted to go back to the Arkham Asylum style of gameplay, that whole Metroidvania-in-3D approach, you could literally do the Metroid thing and have Superman weakened at the start of the story and get his powers back one by one over the course of the story, too. Like, Smallville The Game, but at the end you have your whole suite of powers.
Or you could just do something like the LEGO games did, which is just contextualize everything. Just get his flying mechanics right (which is where Superman Returns' game really screwed the pooch, imo) and fight a reasonable main villain ploy, and the rest would sort of fall into place, I think. And mind you, I really think Superman Returns got SO close to it. Just don't have me flying haphazardly from one point of Metropolis to another while a clock counts down while we have to put out X-number fires or save X-number of people from falling to their deaths, and it's already a better time. AND NO RINGS. 😂
Flash...I'd think Flash IS harder, I won't lie. It's not so much that running fast is his only power, but games have long struggled with how to give the player a sense of speed without forcing them to be completely out of control. ALTHOUGH, I can see a player basically having to shift gears, sometimes you need to run fast but not TOO fast, and other times, you REALLY need to be on the edge of out of control? His ability to phase through objects is cool, but finding a way to incoprorate that in a game could be troublesome. But it's 2024...surely SOMEONE has a take on him that could work. He's got one of the best Rogues Galleries in comics!
God, I hope the Wonder Woman game is good. I mean, I hope it's phenomenal. But I'd even settle for passively enjoyable at this point. Don't get me wrong, I could be perfectly happy with nothing but Arkham Origins sequels until the end of time, but i REALLY do want great games of my favorite heroes, and maybe even some that make me love characters the way Young Justice made me love characters I never expected to even like. Those old movie tie-in games so often got it wrong, I really don't blame publishers for being hesitant. It's 2024, and I'm STILL miffed about the Iron Man games and the awful Thor game. 😂 But then, I also really enjoyed games that other people blast, like that Incredible Hulk game and the Capitain America: Super Soldier game.

And Spider-man is pretty strong himself, with his spidey sense and agility he could dodge close combat attack easily and he has a nice track record of being the underdog but still winning against much stronger guys with his battle iq.
But Batman, a powerless, 20-40 years old guy, with non alien technology being this Doctor Who like figure who can sabotage Alien invasions and build gadgets that can take out planet destroyer creatures, like elfking how?
Is he having superhuman or alien brain? No
Is he having almost 1000 years of experience fighting aliens? No

Batman isn't a God, and nor is he about to harm his friends, I've seen everywhere that Batman fans keep on saying that the contingency plans Batmans held against his friends is considered "Well, Batgoat always prepared." Well, no? I just don't see Batmans having the most foul plans to defeat his team, when he views them as family, especially his friend, his brother Superman. They also have the delusional that Batman is this edgy dark vengeance guy who's always about the darkness when he is not, Batmans character is about getting up and never giving up, I can't help you blame that they are the reason Batman doesn't get character development. Mordon Batman is so unlikable, and his fans are also unlikeble.

Honestly, I like stories where Batman is outwitted, and has to think on his feet to even barely make it out of the situation alive, I like it when instead of just beating people up, he actually shows compassion, when he’s stumped investigating a crime, when that one thing happens that shakes him to his core, because it shows his humanity, the one thing that makes Batman relatable.
I hate stories that give him this almost “invincible and omnipotent ” status, stories where he has a contingency for every possible plan the villain could think of, or show him pulling off impossible feats of strength for a normal human being.

But we as fans can’t just dunk on someone because they only like one character. It’s wrong and if our goal is to show them what else DC and MARVEL have to offer, we need to act in a way that is congruent with that goal.
If we want some of our other favorite characters to get the same treatment as Batman, we as fans and a community need to operate in a manner that is going to get people to WANT to invest in other characters.

A Batman who is primarily a detective, and a Riddler who COULD legitimately be smarter than Bruce (I even used to suggest he should be able to figure out who Batman is, and I swear, the film seems like it was checking off all my boxes at some points). It had a great Batmobile, too.

Bale... look, I love Nolan's films, but I'm not sure Bale's Batman, or especially his Bruce Wayne, would make the top of ANY lists I'd put together. He's smart-attainably smart, even, which I'm not sure is a great choice for Batman-but he's no detective. He reassembles a bullet in TDK, and the computer does ALL the work for him. It was cool, but not really the ideal situation for The World's Greatest Detective, imo. And the damn voice takes me out of it every time. (I've also never liked the TDK or TDKR suits. Same goes for DC comics. I love bits and pieces from DC Comics. Not all, but some. Batman happens to be my favorite "major" character of the franchise. I grew up with Batman. He's the hero I loved since I was conscious enough to choose if I like stuff I watch on TV or not.

They claimed that scene made him a joke without even considering how characters are actually made into jokes, if that makes sense. People tend to forget that despite how smart and skilled Batman is, he’s still just a man who isn’t immune to losing and that’s part of what makes his character amazing.

A character won't always be right, they can be wrong and I like that about some characters. If a character is wrong about something, it would give them the chance to deal with it and become better from it.
Also, I'm pretty certain most Batman "fans" only like him for the fact he can essentially beat anyone if the writers allow it. And I hate all of it.

I love Pattinson's Batman. Dark and brooding. But i also honestly really like Afflecks Bruce Wayne. Lively and charismatic.
If you could mix the two it would be the perfect live action representation imo.

In my opinion on toxic fandoms or people tunnel vision on things about characters whether comic, cartoon, or live action is that the tunnel vision may be a comfort zone which leads to the toxicity of people. The other problem with fandoms is people forget that there are variables to help characters. Also the batman cartoon show is my favorite non live action batman. As for live action Keaton batman, bale batman, batfleck, pattison batman

I'm glad you mentioned money; when I first got into Comics, I'd grab anything that caught my eye in the comic book shop, I'd walk out with a whole collection in my hand... and I nearly went Bankrupt from it. Fortunately I was still a teenager and after cutting back and only focusing on a few of my favorite characters, I recovered, but yeah, I suppose, at least as far as comics go, I am tunnel visioned, but that's because I need to, for the sake of my money.

Batman and Superman are my favorite superheroes, but that doesn't mean I don't like other characters. Red Hood is fun, and Duela Dent is awesome--I wish we had more stories with her; she even made Gotham Knights watchable. Joker and Batman, though, are my favorite Batman comedy duo. It's really hard to write a bad Batman vs. Joker story if you understand the characters, and they're usually the most consistently entertaining.
As far as Marvel is concerned Gwenpool, not Deadpool, is one of the best characters from the series I've ever read, and Miles Morales is pretty cool, too.

I guess my Sales Pitch on Green Lantern would be this: “Unlike someone like Batman, who pretty much is always Bruce Wayne; Green Lantern can tell anyone’s story. Despite Hal Jordan being the titular main green bean, there are many Lantern Corps with many distinct characters. The Corps interact and fight each other in various ways, their different powers have different impacts! Plus, already existing Heroes can join Lantern Corps! We’ve seen it with Superman, Batman, Supergirl, etc! Green Lantern is capable of telling a myriad of different stories for different characters. That’s the main strength of such a concept like Lantern Corps!”

For your QOTD I would say that my favorite live action portrayal of Batman has to be Val Kilmer.
I know several people forget about Batman Forever and hate it, but I honestly loved it. It's not the perfect Batman movie by any means, that title goes to The Dark Knight or The Batman.
However, what stood out to me most was how Batman was portrayed. The story is focused primarily on this internal conflict of what is Bruce's identity? Can Batman and Bruce Wayne co-exist? I feel like the story did great in trying to have him explore those feelings. It allowed character development for Bruce that I feel was lacking in "Batman 1989" and "Batman Returns".
To me in those films, Bruce felt more like a punisher than the Batman. He killed his enemies and had no remorse for it. He also just did not have lots of growth from the two movies. It was an interesting story, especially his the part we figure out Joker is the killer of his parents, but at the same time it felt empty.
Val Kilmer explored the regret that he has for taking the life of all the villains he faced. He has a sense of responsibility that many see Batman with. You can see his relationship with Robin develop and how he wants him to be better than he ever was. How Riddler shows that being Batman not only affects his crusade, but his personal life as well. Not to mention Val Kilmer's acting let the audience connect with Bruce Wayne more.
Once he has gone through the journey of figuring out his identity, he is able to confront Riddler and put an end to his plans. He lets Nigma know that he has finally discovered himself and he can be who he chooses to be.
"I'm both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Not because I have to be, now...because I choose to be."
That's just the plot stuff for me. Aside from that I feel like Batman Forever provided a great balance of a goofy campy Batman, and a more serious one. I won't lie there are some parts that are way too goofy like Two-Face, but although Harvey wasn't the best in this film I can die on the hill that Bruce Wayne was.
I don't see Batman as the serious killer that Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck played. I don't see him as goofy as Adam West. I don't see him with a weird voice like Christian Bale...seriously I love his Batman, but what the fuck was his voice.
I see Batman the way the DCAU and Arkham portrayed him. As a serious guy, but when the time comes for a bit of light heartedness in his character, those moments will shine. Kilmer is my definitive live-action Batman as much as Kevin is my definitive animated one.

Batman fans can be weird about power scaling. They will argue that Batman can never lose with prep time, but often their main complaint about Superman is that he is too powerful to lose, which makes him boring. Double standard, much?
Also, Batman absolutely can lose, and you all know it. Remember Knightfall, or The Dark Knight Rises? Hell, Batman's fallibility/vulnerability are actually central to both Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight

I think the problem is that any large fandom has these kinda toxic factions, for instance, at least in terms of moeny spent, my biggest fandom is Transformers, and there we've got faction lines drawn deep between all different iterations of the franchise, particularly the Michael Bay Movies and Generation 1, and there can be some quite heated arguments between these different factions, with those of us who just like the franchise as a whole caught in the middle. That's just an example, we have it for Marvel, for Star Wars, name a franchise, there will be people like that.
And I believe, I genuinely do, that they are not the majority, they do not speak for all of us, it's simply the fact that they shout loud, while we do not, we are quiet, in part out of a desire not to engage with them, we just sit at home and like what we like, but because we don't make as much noise, those noisy, toxic corners of out fandoms are the ones people outside of us think we all are.
