- SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there.

@@AviationInsanity Cargo was carried in 3 holds located in between the deck houses. The Cargo was loaded by chutes dropped into the hatches once loading was complete chutes were retracted and the hatches were covered by steel plates then clamped down

They had to design the ship to fit into the locks between the lakes. Also they tested the design of the ship on a model with “simulated”water basically they made a model and put it into the tub that would create waves to see how the ship would ride out and mind she was in 17 years of service Edie’s she sank so she went through hell of the storms. However what may have lead to her sinking was they overloaded her and with the added weight and the flexing in the waves is probably what broke her back and causing her to take on water
