  • My name is Charlotte, and I am the maker, knitter, and individual behind "Every Stitch Counts", based out of Washington state. On this channel I primarily make knitting podcasts for my other fiber and handmade loving folks. I talk mostly about what I have finished, what I've been working on, what I plan to be working on, and any other crafty or hobby driven en-devour I find myself getting up to! Sometimes, I also make vlogs, as well as other crafty, lifestyle and hobby related content!

For the charts: yes, that is the way you would read all chart patterns. Think of it as a piece of knitted fabric. It is showing you exactly what your knitting would look like. Your shawl is gorgeous!

You look so classy and beautiful in the top you're wearing! Love it! Here in Germany usually the summer temperature is around 82-85 degrees Fahrenheit which is 28-30 Celsius. But this year up until now it seems as if summer is a no-show. Spring was cold and gardening is difficult, much to my dismay. But the one good thing about it is that it grants much time and mojo for knitting, I'm currently working on a two-color brioche shawl (Flame On by Patrick Donohue) which is my first deep-dive into brioche. I had a hard time with it in the beginning although it is a very well made pattern but in the meantime I got used to it and love it, looks so great. I very much enjoyed spending time with you today, as I always do, being here from episode one. Greetings from overseas.

Hullo from the southern hemisphere (Tasmania) where it’s 10c (52 F). Our winters have been really mild the last few years with little snow on the mountains… I enjoy your podcast because you make garments that fit nicely & that aren’t oversized. I’m not a fan of excess positive ease with drop shoulders that have the shoulder seam half way down the arm. I’m a newby knitter so will be diving into the world of “finished measurements” before long & I take inspiration from your beautifully fitting garments! Love your style too. Best wishes to you & Lady 🧶

I think 76 sounds wonderful. I am from Tx. so it is currently 90 degrees. Summer is 100 plus. I am currently making a pair of socks, a sweater, and a blanket. I find my having several projects does not let me get too bored. Thanks for recommending Wacky yarns. I am always looking for a deal.

Great video! I totally know what you mean about positive ease, I for sure think adding that much ease to each size is a little nuts. If you want something THAT oversized you can always size up, but if even the smallest sizes are huge it leaves you with not many options for sizing down

I used to live up in the PNW in Portland and summers were always the best. I live in the high desert in the southwest now and summers are usually in the 80s, but it’s our rainy season so most days a thunderstorm rolls through in the afternoon and cools everything down. Then the clouds part just in time for sunset and rainbows! We’re heading into rainbow season now. 🌈
Also my friend just finished the Aloft Shawl too and she had the same issue with the side I cord being tight, so it might not be all you knitting too tightly.

For the charts, it depends if the pattern is to be knitted in the round or knitted flat. For patterns knitted in the round, every row is read from right to left. Your shawl pattern is typical for something knitted flat -odd rows (RS) read right to left, even rows (WS) read left to right. Some shawls can be knitted in the round and then steeked.

Here is Sammamish and weather is lovely. I agree on the excessive amount of patterns with too much positive ease. Another great podcaster that has brought up this issue is NEKnits. A little positive ease is great but when you cannot knit the smallest size, then that is nuts. I always wonder am I the only person that washes dishes and needs to push up their sleeves? 🙃

Hi Charlotte. Loved your podcast. totally agree with the need for patterns with garment shaping and options, as opposed to the less technical plain versions. I guess it is where we are at wrt knitting journey??? initially plain is good as we learn and conquer techniques. As we progress, we wish for more challenges and being taught in patterns, new ways to create a garment that suits us.
Winter here in New Zealand. Today, sunny outside, fire on inside this am. 14 degrees C now, 10am. Knitting on PetiteKnit Cloud sweater and loving it. Made some mods, as you talk about, to customise to my body. Just learning new tricks and wanting to learn more! Love it❤ Beautiful knitting of yours as usual. 🥰 Sharon

Hello from the North East of England where it is a bit chilly, about 10°C today.
Charts, if you are knitting in the round you always knit right to left, and if knitting flat it's right to left then left to right, which mirrors how you knit the rows if you think about it. Hope that helps. Your shawl is gorgeous!!

Jacksonville, Florida here & it’s 89 degrees at 1:30 pm which is not bad except it’s very humid today, no breeze. The Aloft shawl is gorgeous but I’ve knitted 2 shawls in another pattern that I love already and that’s about the limit for me use-wise. I want to knit one out of cotton to be a beach coverup but I have so much difficulty knitting with cotton probably because, like you, I’m a tight knitter, that I’ve not had the energy to try again. Maybe if just the right color comes along. I don’t think gauge is all that important with shawls. If you’re happy with the fabric being produced, you just keep going until it’s the size you like and yes, the chart zigzags left to right, right to left on all FLAT patterns.😊

My default solution to getting a good tension for the edges of shawls like this is to add a YO (or even 2) every other row right where you need the extra stretch, and dropping that YO in the very next row. Another way of achieving the same thing, if you're doing M1 increases at the border, is to create the YO in the row prior to when you make the M1, and then you increase into that YO directly.

Hey, I totally agree with you re: alpaca! It's often just too drapey and lacks structure. My probably biggest "miss" of a project is a Kutovakika Darling Cardigan that I made this year, I used the Sandnes Garn Borstet Alpakka and it's just... a huge, super floppy cardigan lol. I even sized down from my suggested size, and it's still massive and grew even worse by blocking. I have no idea what I'm going to do with that cardigan, I can't really see myself wearing it as it is...
Your Harju is beautiful, those cables are so intricate and the fabric your 2 yarns make looks super cosy 🥰 I think the Tukuwool colourway name Manna comes from the Finnish word for semolina. And that shawl is just amazing, I am not really a shawl person but I fell in love with yours the second I saw it!

    • @everystitch.counts

Also-when knitting shawls I use gauge more of an idea of size than something necessary, unlike clothing. But that’s just me.

Hi from Vancouver, BC. Still sweater weather here most days 🙄
The Harju sweater looks amazing! I agree, 100% alpaca in a heavier weight is not good on its own. Best to hold it with something that gives it a bit more structure. I have knit the cardigan No.8 twice. For that one I like it very oversized. Heaving said that, I fall into the range of small but knit the x-small. The cardigan no.9 is a different style and that one I knit with less positive ease. I think it totally depends on the style and how you intend to wear. Yarn/fabric too. Some fabrics will just look too big while others can handle more positive ease.

Hello from South Florida!! So our typical summer weather stays in the upper 90’s with “feels like” temperatures over 100!! So you can imagine there aren’t as many knitters here as I would like!! I am loving your test knit! And yes, any time you knit from a chart in a flat piece, the RS reads from right to left and the WS reads from left to right!! Good luck on all your projects.

Hello dear, just to say that your shawl result makes me smile. It is femininity in its best. And in a knitting world of ours in wich 99% of the garments which are made are rustic and not romantic and without any majestic style your shawl is a wish of mine come true.the option of making a fine wool garment with elegance is allways there but most of the ladies do not make them and the softness of being a woman is lost.so, Thank you. 🎉 Shilhav Kest

Hello Charlotte. I have been thinking about you and Lady. The shawl looks fantastic. The colour suits the pattern. The singlet you are wearing looks good on you. The jumper/sweater you are making is awesome. It is going top look fantastic. I can not read any patterns. I need to see how things are being done. Yay for CZcams. My cashmere shawl is going well. I love cashmere. I did not know you can like a type of yarn that much.
I have finished my last jacket. It only took me five days for this one. It is for an older child. Is there any way I could contact you via email or something. I wrote a very long message to you. Love you lots. Thoughts and Prayers.Thank you for sharing. Love and Blessings.
